Campgrounds and RV parks near Marion, SC

Fishing drives much of the recreation. Lake Norton at Little Pee Dee State Park holds bream, bass, and catfish, and rental jon boats and kayaks are typically available at the park. The Little Pee Dee River itself is a slow blackwater float suited to canoes and kayaks. At Princess Ann, the Lumber River offers paddling and shoreline fishing for black crappie, largemouth bass, and redbreast sunfish. Short trails wind through cypress swamp and bottomland hardwoods, with good chances to spot herons, kingfishers, and river otters. The Lumber River is federally designated Wild and Scenic and is the only blackwater river in North Carolina to hold that status. Families traveling with children often build in a stop at South of the Border, adjacent to Camp Pedro, for the Reptile Lagoon, arcade, and Sombrero Tower observation deck. Myrtle Beach is roughly an hour east by car.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Pee Dee. March through May brings warming days, blooming wild azalea and spider lily along the rivers, and manageable humidity. October and November deliver clear skies, cooler nights, and lower bug pressure, which is often the sweet spot for tent campers and anyone without air conditioning. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and mosquito and biting-fly activity high near swamp forests and blackwater rivers. Sites at Little Pee Dee State Park and along I-95 fill on summer weekends and holidays, driven by beach traffic to Myrtle Beach. September is historically the wettest month in Marion and coincides with the peak of Atlantic hurricane season, which can bring high water and temporary closures along the Lumber and Little Pee Dee rivers. Winters are mild but damp. Freezes occur, snow is rare, and most public and private campgrounds in the area stay open year round, though river levels can run high after winter rains.

Public state park sites in this area lean rustic. Little Pee Dee State Park has electric and water hookups on most RV sites, a limited number of full-hookup sites, comfort stations with showers, and lakefront cabin lodging. Cell coverage is generally usable but not fast. Sites are shaded by pine and hardwood, and the ground is sandy. Princess Ann is primitive: picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post at each site, with no shower house and no RV hookups. The front gate locks at posted closing times, so late arrivals need to plan around park hours. Camp Pedro is a paved, full-hookup RV park with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-through sites long enough for large Class A rigs, bathhouses, laundry, and walking access to restaurants and shops at South of the Border. Interstate noise is audible.
