Campgrounds near Mayesville
Mayesville sits in the Sumter County flatlands of South Carolina's Midlands, roughly halfway between Columbia and Florence off I-20 and I-95. The area is farmland ringed by state parks, national forest land, and the reservoir country of Lake Marion, which gives RV travellers several distinct camping options within a short drive.
The closest developed campground is Lee State Park, a park of bottomland hardwood forest along the Lynches River, about 20 minutes east. Southwest, Poinsett State Park connects to Manchester State Forest with a campground offering RV and tent loops, sitting in the High Hills of Santee. Farther south, Taw Caw Campground and Marina sits on Lake Marion in Summerton with waterfront sites, a boat ramp, and a lighted pier.
Private options round out the mix. The Farm Campground offers a rural, small-park alternative near Mayesville, and CrossRoads Coach Resort at the ROB caters to larger Class A rigs looking for full hookups and paved sites.
Things to do near Mayesville
Water is the main draw. Lake Marion, the state's largest lake, supports bass, catfish, and crappie fishing, and Taw Caw Campground and Marina offers wet slips, gas, bait, tackle, and a fish cleaning station. Kayakers can paddle the hardwood floodplain of the Lynches River from Lee State Park.
On land, Poinsett is the hiking hub. Trails accessed from the park include the Coquina, Laurel Group, Hill Top, and Scout trails, and connectors to the Palmetto Trail also leave from the park. Lee State Park caters to equestrians with designated campsites, hitching rails, stables, and a show ring.
Families can add day trips to historic Camden, the Swan Lake Iris Gardens in Sumter, and the Santee National Wildlife Refuge for birding and alligator spotting.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots. From late March through May, daytime highs sit in the 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and wildflowers and dogwoods bloom across the sandhills. October and November bring cool nights, low bug pressure, and the best hiking conditions of the year, with hardwoods in the Lynches and Wateree bottomlands turning color.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and biting insects active. South Carolina is known for its insect population; mosquitoes are a problem near the lake in summer, and Spanish moss can hide chiggers. Lake Marion draws its heaviest boating and fishing crowds from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and waterfront sites at Taw Caw book out early.
Winter is mild but variable. Lee State Park's campground stays open year round, and off-season stays offer quieter trails, though occasional freezes and rainy fronts move through the region.
How to book a campsite near Mayesville
State park sites at Lee and Poinsett are booked through the South Carolina State Parks reservation system, online or by phone at 1-866-345-PARK. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, and reservations requested less than one day in advance of check-in must be made directly through the park. The minimum length of stay is 2 nights.
Check-in time for camping is 2:00 p.m. and check-out time is 12:00 p.m. Poinsett's campground provides 24 sites with individual water and electrical hookups and 26 tent sites with individual water; some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and the campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers.
Private parks like Taw Caw Campground and Marina, The Farm Campground, and CrossRoads Coach Resort at the ROB are booked directly with the operator; call ahead for big-rig clearances and waterfront availability.
What to expect
Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, sandy soils, pine and hardwood forest, and Spanish moss draped through the lowland canopy. Sites at the state parks are wooded and spaced, with hot showers and dump stations available. The Poinsett campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers, and all sites include water, picnic table, and a fire ring. Sites cannot accommodate awnings or slide-outs due to the dense tree cover.
Waterfront sites at Taw Caw offer water and electric hookups, with a dump station on-site. Cell coverage is generally solid near the interstates and thinner deep inside Manchester State Forest.
South Carolina forest health authorities advise firewood should be obtained and used locally, and firewood brought into state parks must be sourced from within the state. Pack insect repellent, sun protection, and a rain plan for summer afternoons.
