Campgrounds and RV parks near McBee, SC

The Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is the anchor day trip. It protects longleaf pine habitat for red-cockaded woodpeckers and is laced with ponds, wildlife drives, and hiking trails. The refuge supports the largest known population of red-cockaded woodpecker clusters in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Sand Hills State Forest adjoins the refuge and adds Sugarloaf Mountain, a traditional gathering point maintained as a day-use recreational area. Equestrian travel is a major reason people come. H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area covers 7,000 rolling acres of longleaf pine forest and fields, hosts national-level field trial and retriever competitions, and offers more than 20 miles of trails and sand roads plus stables, kennels, corrals, and arenas. Cheraw State Park adds an 18-hole golf course, bicycle and equestrian trails, boat rentals, and Lake Juniper. At Lee State Park, families can paddle the Lynches River, fish the artesian millpond, and ride the equestrian trails.

Spring and fall are the peak windows. Daytime temperatures are mild, humidity is manageable, and dogwoods, azaleas, and wildflowers bloom through the longleaf understory. Spring also lines up with retriever field trials and horse events at H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area, so weekend sites near the arena book out early. The park runs a busy schedule of events and can close to the general public during them, so travelers should contact the park before planning a trip. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging near 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the wooded bottomlands near Lee State Park can bring biting flies and gnats. Sites still fill on weekends because school is out and the ponds and rivers get heavy day-use. Winter brings short days and cool nights, with January averaging highs near 52 degrees Fahrenheit and lows near 37 degrees Fahrenheit. Hard freezes are uncommon, and state park campgrounds in the area generally stay open year-round. Travelers combining camping with golf at Cheraw State Park should confirm course status before booking, since the course has been undergoing renovation.

Expect a mix of hookup RV pads at the state parks and primitive sites at the state forest. Lee State Park offers water, electric, and sewer hookups on some sites, a dump station, restrooms with hot showers, and hitching rails for horses, along with a heavily wooded setting near the Lynches River. H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area is oriented around horses and dogs. Amenities include a meeting hall, waterfowl pond, and 27 camping sites with water and electric hookups, along with primitive campsites, bathhouses, stables, kennels, corrals, and a show ring. Cheraw State Park adds cabins and a campground on Lake Juniper with an RV dump station on site. Hunting is active on parts of Sand Hills State Forest and adjacent WMA lands in fall and winter, and international blaze orange is required on WMA lands during deer season.
