Campgrounds near Newport, South Carolina
Newport is a small York County community in the northern South Carolina Piedmont, sitting between Rock Hill and Fort Mill and roughly a half hour south of Charlotte. RV travelers use the area as a base for Lake Wylie recreation, Carowinds theme park visits, and quick access to Charlotte attractions without staying in the city itself.
Camping options fall into two clear groups. County-run Ebenezer Park, a 26-acre park north of Rock Hill on the shores of Lake Wylie, offers overnight stays in 79 full hook-up RV campsites and 5 tent campsites. Allison Creek Park, a 160-acre York County park on the same lake, adds 33 full hook-up RV sites and 16 primitive tent sites. Private options include Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey and Crown Cove RV Park, both close to I-77.
Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort is a 55-acre campground next to the theme park, with roughly 200 campsites, cabin rentals, pull-through sites with full hookups, 50 amp service, tenting sites, hot showers, laundry, a store, a swimming pool, and a complimentary shuttle to the park gate.
Things to do near Newport
Lake Wylie drives most of the outdoor activity. Ebenezer Park has three boat ramps, a semicircular fishing pier, a designated swimming area, a kayak and canoe launch, a beach volleyball court, a pickleball court, walking trails, and a playground. Allison Creek Park adds four boat ramps, a kayak and canoe launch, a fishing dock, and roughly three miles of trails on the west side of the lake.
Carowinds is the region's biggest draw for families. Guests staying at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort receive discounts on ticket packages and a complimentary shuttle to the front gate, which removes parking and traffic headaches on peak days.
Beyond the lake and the park, Rock Hill and Fort Mill offer breweries, greenways, and shopping. The Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill has miles of trails suitable for hiking and light mountain biking, and Charlotte's museums and pro sports venues are a short drive north.

The Newport area has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, cool winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for camping, and the two York County parks and Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort all stay open year-round, though seasonal amenities scale back in winter.
Spring brings pollen and steady rain but comfortable daytime temperatures, while fall tends to deliver the most reliable stretch of dry, cool weather, with September the driest month on average. Summer is peak season for lake use and Carowinds visits, and afternoon thunderstorms are common on hot days, so morning activities are usually a safer bet for water recreation.
Swimming beaches, concessions, and lifeguard coverage at the county parks are keyed to the Memorial Day through Labor Day window. Ebenezer Park's seasonal concession stand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, so off-season stays require more self-sufficiency on food and supplies. Winter overnight lows can drop near freezing, so RV renters should plan for cold-weather hose management on the coldest nights.

This was our second time renting from Matt and Shannon, and once again everything was smooth from start to finish. Their RV made our weekend at the Ebony Horsemen Rodeo comfortable and stress-free. Can't wait to book with them again for next year's event!
Maisha P. - Aug 2026
Here’s a polished rewrite of your review: --- Matt was an outstanding host. He was flexible when I needed to adjust both the drop-off location and the rental dates for the RV. He personally met me to hand over the RV, walked me through how to use the equipment, and made sure I felt comfortable. Throughout the process, he was attentive and responsive to my concerns, which made the experience smooth and enjoyable.

How to book campgrounds near Newport
Reservation systems vary by operator. York County's Ebenezer Park and Allison Creek Park both take bookings through Campspot, with reservations accepted up to 13 months in advance and a 14-night maximum length of stay. Both fill quickly for summer weekends, so booking several weeks ahead is wise.
Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort books through the Carowinds site or by phone. Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey reserves through the KOA website or app, and Crown Cove RV Park handles bookings directly.
Reservations are strongly recommended for weekend stays from May through September, when lakefront sites fill quickly. For RV renters, confirm site length, hookup amps (30 vs 50), and pull-through availability at the time of booking, and check whether the campground accepts delivered rental RVs so the host can drop and set up on the reserved pad.
What to expect
Sites in the area range from tightly packed private resort pads to shaded county lakefront pull-throughs. At Ebenezer Park, RV sites are full hook-up with water, sewer, and 50/30/20 amp electric, and each has a fire ring with grill and a picnic table on a concrete pad. Some sites are unlevel and connections can be off-center, so extra hose length and leveling blocks help.
Allison Creek's RV sites are paved with the same 50/30/20 amp full hook-up setup. Carowinds Camp Wilderness has level sites with full hookups that accommodate RVs up to 45 feet, plus a pool, cabanas, and shuttle service. Expect some ambient noise from the theme park and from planes serving Charlotte Douglas.
Cell coverage is generally strong across York County. Summer weekends bring crowded boat ramps, busy access roads, and heavy Carowinds traffic on I-77, so weekday arrivals are easier when possible.
