Campgrounds and RV parks near Oak Grove, SC

Lake Murray dominates the outdoor calendar. Boat ramps, marinas, and swim areas ring the 50,000-acre reservoir, and Dreher Island State Park spans three islands and 348 acres with access to 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline, about 30 miles from Columbia. The lake is known for striped and largemouth bass fishing, and the Saluda River below the dam is a popular tubing and kayaking run. In town, families head to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the Soda City Market on Main Street on Saturday mornings, and the South Carolina State Museum. Sesquicentennial State Park in northeast Columbia has a lake, trails, and a dog park. Congaree National Park, about 40 minutes southeast, protects the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the Southeast. The park has a boardwalk loop, paddling on Cedar Creek, and a synchronous firefly display that typically runs for about two weeks between mid-May and mid-June.

The Midlands run on a long, warm camping calendar. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity. March through May brings wildflowers and busy weekends at Lake Murray, while October and early November offer clear skies and thinner crowds. Summer is hot and humid. Afternoon highs around 90 degrees Fahrenheit are common from June through August, and pop-up thunderstorms are frequent. Lake sites and campgrounds with pools book up on weekends, and shaded pull-throughs are worth requesting. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the peak from August through October, and can bring heavy rain inland from tropical systems. Winter is short and mild. Freezing overnight lows occur but hard freezes are limited, and most private RV parks around Oak Grove stay open year-round. Measurable snow is rare in the Midlands. State-park campgrounds also operate in winter, though some loops or day-use amenities may run on reduced hours.

Most private parks in the Oak Grove and greater Columbia area cater to big rigs. Expect paved or gravel pads, 30/50-amp service, water and sewer at the site, and Wi-Fi of variable quality. Pull-throughs are common, and many parks accept extended and monthly stays alongside overnighters. State-park sites tend to be more wooded and spread out, with water and electric hookups, a central dump station, and shared bathhouses rather than full sewer at every site. Reservations are required for named sites. Bring shade and bug protection in summer. Mosquitoes and biting flies are active from spring into fall, and afternoon storms roll through quickly. Confirm rig-length limits and low-branch clearance before booking, especially at lake and state-park loops. Pets are generally welcome on leash, and quiet hours are enforced at most parks.
