Campgrounds and RV parks near Orangeburg, SC

Lake Marion drives most of the outdoor activity. The lake, together with Lake Moultrie, covers more than 170,000 acres and is known for abundant populations of huge catfish, along with striped bass. Out in the lake across from Santee State Park is a flooded cypress forest, and pontoon boat tours into the swampy headwaters are based out of the park's marina and store. Self-serve kayak rentals are available at Santee State Park through an automated kiosk by the water on Lake Marion. Trails at the park suit casual hiking and cycling, and a fishing pier and boat ramps make day trips easy. Families traveling with kids can visit farm animals at Outside Inn Campground or use the pool, game room, and stocked ponds at River Bottom Farms. Congaree National Park, with its boardwalk through old-growth cypress bottomland, is about an hour north.

Spring, from March through May, is the most comfortable window for RV camping. Daytime highs move from the mid-60s Fahrenheit in March into the low 80s by May, rainfall is moderate, and biting insects are still manageable. This is also a busy fishing period on Lake Marion, so state park sites book early. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs commonly in the low 90s Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms frequent. Water-based activities dominate, and shaded sites at Santee State Park and Outside Inn are worth targeting. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak tropical activity in August and September that occasionally affects inland South Carolina. Fall brings cooler nights and lower rainfall, and it is a strong shoulder season for RV travel. Winter camping is possible year-round at Santee State Park and Sweetwater Lake, with mild days, chilly nights, and low crowds, though occasional cold snaps can drop temperatures below freezing overnight.

Expect a mix of state park and small-operator sites. The 50-site Cypress View Campground sits on the west side of Santee State Park, and the 108-site Lakeshore Campground is on the east side. Each site is packed sand with individual water and electrical hookups and a picnic table, both campgrounds have restrooms with hot showers, and many sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Both campgrounds have a dump station, and some sites offer 50-amp service. Private campgrounds tend to offer full hookups and more amenities. Outside Inn provides full-hookup RV sites, a bathhouse with laundry, walking trails, and farm animals. River Bottom Farms Family Campground has pull-through, full-hookup sites with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp options, plus a pool, game room, playground, stocked ponds, and nature trails. Sweetwater Lake sits on a small spring-fed lake with lakefront RV sites and a simple bathhouse.
