Campgrounds and RV parks near Pinewood, SC

Water is the main draw. Lake Marion supports bass and catfish angling, kayaking, and boating from ramps and piers inside Santee State Park, and guided lake tours run from the park pier. The Santee Cooper lakes region is a well-known fishing destination in the Southeast. On land, Poinsett State Park has a 10-acre lake, a swimming area, and trails that connect into the Palmetto Trail and Manchester State Forest for longer hikes and mountain biking. Wildlife viewing, geocaching, and picnicking are common family activities across both parks. Congaree National Park, home to one of the largest intact old-growth bottomland hardwood forests left in the country, is roughly 40 minutes from the Santee campgrounds and offers boardwalk walks, ranger programs, and seasonal firefly viewing.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping in this part of South Carolina. Daytime temperatures are mild, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and biting insects are less aggressive. Mountain laurel and other spring blooms are a signature of Poinsett State Park. Fall brings color to the hardwood forests and steadier fishing on Lake Marion. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rainfall totals. Shaded sites and hookups with 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Gnats, mosquitoes, and other bugs can be a nuisance on wooded sites, and falling pine cones can damage tents pitched under pines. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest activity typically in late summer and early fall. Winters are cool rather than cold, and both Poinsett State Park and Santee State Park stay open year-round, which makes off-season stays a good option for travelers who want quieter campgrounds.

State park campgrounds in this area are wooded and rustic. Poinsett State Park has 24 water-and-electric sites and 26 tent sites with water, packed-dirt and gravel campground roads, a dump station, and hot showers. Dense tree cover can limit awnings and slide-outs on some sites, and cabins plus a small camp store are also on the property. At Santee State Park, Cypress View has 50 packed-sand sites on the west side of the park with paved interior roads and skews toward RV travelers, while Lakeshore has 108 sites on the east side, many with lake views, reached via rougher dirt roads. Both offer water and electric hookups, hot showers, and a dump station, though sewer at the site is not standard and Wi-Fi is limited to the park store area. Cell service is generally usable but not strong in every loop, so downloading maps and reservations before arrival is recommended.
