Campgrounds and RV parks near Privateer, SC

Lake Marion drives most of the recreation. Lake Marion and its sister Lake Moultrie gave birth to America's inland striped bass fishery, and together the lakes cover more than 170,000 acres and are also known for large catfish. Anglers can launch from Santee State Park, Taw Caw Campground and Marina, or public ramps around the lake, and pontoon boat tours of the flooded cypress forest run out of the Santee park marina. On the Sumter County side, Poinsett State Park offers quieter, forested recreation. Outdoor activities there include boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, volleyball, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. The park's 10-acre lake is used for fishing and johnboat rentals, and hiking and biking trails connect to the Palmetto Trail through Manchester State Forest. Congaree National Park sits roughly an hour west, and Santee National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive south for birding and short trails.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of South Carolina. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the mid 60s into the low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower than in summer, and rainfall is moderate. Fall brings similar temperatures with thinner crowds once school is back in session. Summer is hot and humid. July is the warmest month, with an average high near 90.7 degrees Fahrenheit and a low around 72.9 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, August is the wettest month on average, and campgrounds along Lake Marion fill quickly around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. Waterfront and full-hookup sites at Taw Caw Campground and Marina, Palmetto Shores RV Resort, and Santee / Santee Lakes KOA Journey should be booked well ahead. Winter is mild by northern standards but can turn cold and wet, with average January highs in the low 50s and lows in the upper 30s. State park campgrounds at Poinsett and Santee stay open year-round, and striped-bass and catfish anglers keep the lake active through the cooler months when state park availability is generally wide.

State park sites in this area are wooded and quiet. Poinsett provides 24 sites with individual water and electrical hookups plus 26 tent sites with water only, some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and the campground has restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, picnic tables, and fire rings. Cypress View at Santee State Park is a 50-site campground on the west side of the park with packed-sand pads, water and electric hookups, and many sites that accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Taw Caw Campground and Marina has 2,000 feet of waterfront, a paved boat ramp, 49 wet slips, a 150-foot lighted pier, restrooms with hot showers, free Wi-Fi, a dump station, a convenience store, and a sandy swimming beach. Cell service is fair but not uniform, and stocking up on groceries in Sumter or Santee before arrival is a good idea.
