Campgrounds and RV parks near Red Bank, SC

Lake Murray is the main draw. The 50,000-acre reservoir supports boating, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, and some of the best striped and largemouth bass fishing spots, with public ramps at Dreher Island State Park and multiple county access points. In Columbia, roughly 20 miles from Red Bank, families can spend a day at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden or walk the Congaree River trails. Saluda Shoals Park offers shaded paths, a splash pad in season, and river access. Sesquicentennial State Park in northeast Columbia adds pine-forest hiking, a small lake, and rental paddle boats. Congaree National Park, about an hour southeast, protects one of the largest intact old-growth bottomland hardwood forests in the country, with a boardwalk loop, canoe trails on Cedar Creek, and ranger-led programs.

The Midlands of South Carolina have a humid subtropical climate, so seasons matter more for comfort than for access. Most campgrounds around Red Bank and Lake Murray operate year-round, and Dreher Island State Park stays open through all four seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. From March through May and again from mid-September through November, daytime highs sit in a pleasant range and humidity drops off from summer peaks. Wildflowers, spring fishing, and cool evenings around the fire ring make these the busiest booking windows at lake sites. Summers are hot and humid with daytime temperatures averaging near 90°F across most of the state and overnight lows near 70°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Tropical cyclones and afternoon thunderstorms contribute to precipitation during the summer and sometimes fall months. Winters are mild by North American standards; freezes are possible overnight, and freezing rain is more common than snow around and southeast of Columbia, but daytime temperatures normally warm up above freezing.

Expect flat, wooded Sandhills terrain, tall loblolly and longleaf pines, and warm humid air for most of the camping season. Sites at private parks near Red Bank are generally level with full hookups suited to travel trailers and larger motorhomes; Big Rig Friendly RV Resort is set up specifically for longer rigs. At Dreher Island State Park, 97 paved campsites are available for RV and tent camping with picnic table, water and electrical hookups, and many sit directly on the Lake Murray shoreline. All camping, camper cabin and villa guests check in at the Tackle Shop before proceeding to their site. Campground amenities include hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall, plan for afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and remember that South Carolina State Parks encourage sourcing firewood locally to limit the spread of forest pests.
