Campgrounds and RV parks near South Congaree, SC

Congaree National Park is the main draw. The 2.4-mile Boardwalk Loop stays elevated above the floodplain, and longer trails like Oakridge and Kingsnake push deeper into the old-growth bottomland forest. Paddlers use the marked Cedar Creek Canoe Trail through cypress and tupelo, and outfitters in Columbia rent boats and run shuttles. Fishing is permitted throughout the park with a South Carolina license. Lake Murray, west of Columbia, adds boating, swimming, and lakeshore fishing. In town, families can visit Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum, and the Saturday-morning Soda City Market on Main Street. In mid-May, Congaree's synchronous fireflies draw visitors for a roughly week-long viewing event, with park entry by lottery pass only through Recreation.gov.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for an RV trip. Spring daytime highs climb from the mid-60s in March into the low 80s by May, insects are still manageable early on, and rainfall is moderate. Fall brings cooler nights, drier air, and clearer skies into October and November, with foliage peaking late in the season. Summer is hot and humid. Highs sit in the low 90s, thunderstorms are frequent, and mosquitoes and other biting insects can be intense in and around the floodplain. Many visitors skip Congaree from June through September for that reason. Atlantic hurricane season also runs June through November, occasionally pushing heavy rain and wind inland to the Midlands. Winter is Congaree's high flood season. Rain anywhere upstream can raise the Congaree and Wateree Rivers and submerge large sections of the park. Daytime highs typically sit in the mid-50s with overnight lows in the mid-30s, so RVers should pack for cool, damp weather and check river forecasts before planning trail or paddle days.

Private parks near South Congaree lean toward full-hookup pull-through sites, bathhouses, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with family amenities like a pool, playground, arcade, and stocked ponds at River Bottom Farms Family Campground. Big Rig Friendly RV Resort is set up for longer rigs, and Cedar Creek Resort Clothing Optional is adults-only and not suitable for families. Inside Congaree National Park, sites are primitive and tent-only, with fire rings and picnic tables. Longleaf has vault toilets and trash collection but no running water at the sites; Bluff is a hike-in campground with no restrooms. Potable water is available at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. Vehicles stay in the parking area, and campers walk in to their spot. Cell service is generally reliable at Longleaf and near the visitor center. Alligators, snakes, and biting insects are part of the floodplain environment, so keep food secured and stay on marked boardwalks and trails after dusk.
