Campgrounds and RV parks near Springdale, SC

Congaree National Park, about 30 minutes southeast, protects the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern United States. The 2.6-mile Boardwalk Loop is a raised, accessible boardwalk suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, and the Cedar Creek Canoe Trail winds through the forest for paddlers. The Congaree River Blue Trail extends about 50 miles through and beyond the park. Closer to Springdale, families head to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum, and Lake Murray for boating and swimming. Sesquicentennial State Park adds a 30-acre lake, boat rentals, hiking trails, and a mountain-bike loop. Each spring, synchronous fireflies gather in Congaree and flash in unison as part of a mating display, typically peaking in mid to late May.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping around Springdale. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers, and the Congaree firefly event, though March is also one of the wetter months of the year. Fall cools off after Labor Day and brings smaller crowds, fewer bugs, and generally drier weather, making it a popular window for visiting Congaree National Park. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy, with afternoon thunderstorms common and highs regularly near 90. Mosquitoes and other insects are heavy in the Congaree floodplain from late spring through early fall, and the park itself is best avoided in the peak summer months for that reason. Private RV parks stay busy with travelers passing through on I-20 and I-26, and with families visiting Fort Jackson graduations. Winter is mild by North American standards. Columbia has a humid subtropical climate, with January the coldest month, averaging highs near 53 and lows around 38. Measurable snow is rare, and most private parks and Sesquicentennial State Park operate year-round.

Private parks in the Springdale and Lexington area lean practical: level pull-through sites, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, and easy interstate access. Expect a mix of overnight travelers and longer-term guests at most local parks, with Barnyard RV Park and Big Rig Friendly RV Resort catering to larger rigs. Sesquicentennial State Park runs a more traditional campground with 78 standard sites arranged in two loops on packed sand or gravel. Sites 1 through 29 have 20/30/50-amp electric, with sites 1 through 9 offering full hookups including sewer, and the remaining sites have 20/30-amp electric and water. All sites include picnic tables and fire rings, and the campground has modern restrooms with hot showers and a dump station. Cell service is generally strong throughout the area, and grocery stores, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are all within a short drive.
