Campgrounds near St. George, South Carolina
St. George sits in Dorchester County at Exit 77 on Interstate 95, roughly 45 minutes from Charleston and within easy reach of the Edisto River basin. The town is best known for the annual World Grits Festival and serves as a practical Lowcountry base for RV travelers moving between Florida and the Carolinas.
Options close to town skew toward private, interstate-friendly parks built for overnighters and longer stays. St George RV Park behind hotel and Jolly Acres RV Park and Storage both cater to travelers pulling off I-95, while Eagle's RV Park and Horseshoe Lake Farm offer quieter, country-style settings a short drive from the highway corridor.
For a public-land alternative, Colleton State Park lies just south of town off Highway 15 in Canadys. The park is small, only about 35 acres, but sits directly on the Edisto River, one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in the country, and it draws paddlers, anglers, and RVers looking for shaded, hookup sites near the water.
Things to do around St. George
Paddling is the signature activity. Colleton State Park serves as the headquarters for the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Trail and connects downstream to Givhans Ferry State Park via 23 miles of blackwater river. Rentals are available from outfitters near the park, and the current is gentle enough for family trips.
Fishing, birding, and short nature walks fill out most itineraries. The Cypress Swamp Nature Trail at Colleton ends at a boardwalk on the Edisto, and Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie are within reasonable driving range for freshwater anglers.
Charleston, Summerville, and Walterboro are all within about an hour by car, which puts historic districts, beaches, and larger grocery runs within a comfortable day trip from any of the local campgrounds. Each April, downtown St. George hosts the World Grits Festival, a multi-day event with a parade, carnival, and the well-known Rolling in the Grits contest.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the St. George area. March through May brings mild highs, lower humidity than summer, and comfortable nights, and it lines up with prime paddling conditions on the Edisto. October and November deliver similar temperatures with fewer bugs and reduced afternoon storm activity.
Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging around 91°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Campgrounds remain open, but shaded sites fill first, and travelers should plan for high dew points, biting insects near the river, and the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in September for coastal South Carolina.
Winters are short and generally mild. Measurable snow is rare in the Lowcountry, and most private parks and Colleton State Park operate year-round. Overnight lows in January can dip near freezing, so freshwater hoses and tanks need standard cold-snap precautions.

We had a great time renting this camper and taking it on a family trip to Jellystone Park. Richard had great communication throughout the trip and the camper had everything we needed. Would recommend this camper!

Great weekend glamping in Richard’s camper at JI County Park! The camper was in great condition, everything worked, and it had everything needed while away from home. Richard was great at communicating with me from beginning to end. He delivered the camper early and had it setup for our family to enjoy with nothing to do when we arrived. Nice full size fridge. Spacious bathroom. WiFi hotspot was handy. First time renting an RV and looking forward to doing it again!

How to book campgrounds near St. George
Colleton State Park reservations are handled through the South Carolina State Parks system, either online at the state park reservation portal or by phone at 866-345-7275. The campground has 25 full-hookup sites with water, 20/30/50-amp electric, and sewer, plus a camper cabin. Sites may be booked up to 13 months in advance, with a two-night minimum stay, and transfers must be made by phone rather than online.
Private parks in the area, including Jolly Acres RV Park and Storage, Eagle's RV Park, St George RV Park behind hotel, and Horseshoe Lake Farm, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Weekly and monthly rates are common, and Jolly Acres also offers boat and RV storage. For festival weekends and holiday travel, sites near I-95 book out well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Most private parks in the St. George area lean rural and practical rather than resort-style. Expect level sites, full or partial hookups, pull-throughs sized for larger rigs, and gravel or packed-sand pads. Amenities such as laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi are common but limited, and office hours can be short outside peak season.
Colleton State Park is compact, with paved interior roads, packed-sand sites, 20/30/50-amp full hookups, and a bathhouse with hot showers. Some sites accommodate rigs up to 40 feet and others cap around 25 feet, so length should be confirmed at booking. Proximity to Highway 15 means daytime road noise at a few sites.
Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable near the interstate and in town, Wi-Fi is available near the bathhouse at Colleton, and a dump station is on site at the state park and at most private parks in the area.
