Campgrounds and RV parks near St. Matthews, SC

Lake Marion drives most of the recreation in the area. From Santee State Park, RV travelers can fish for catfish, striped bass, and bream, launch kayaks and canoes, or join a guided pontoon boat tour into the flooded cypress forest. The park also offers hiking and biking trails and a lakefront day-use area. At Poinsett State Park, the terrain shifts to sandhills, hardwood bluffs, and a ten-acre lake with boat rentals. Trails from the park connect into the Palmetto Trail through Manchester State Forest. Congaree National Park, known for its old-growth bottomland forest and springtime synchronous firefly display, is within about an hour's drive and works well as a day trip from any base near St. Matthews.

The St. Matthews area has a humid subtropical climate: hot, wet summers and mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable months for RV camping, with daytime highs generally in the 70s Fahrenheit, lower humidity, and fewer bugs. Wildflowers, dogwoods, and mountain laurel bloom at Poinsett State Park in spring, and fall brings color to the hardwoods in the High Hills of Santee. Summer is peak season for Lake Marion boating, fishing, and swimming, but afternoon thunderstorms are common and mosquitoes, chiggers, and gnats can be aggressive, especially near the water and Spanish moss. Pack repellent, and consider treating tents with permethrin. Winter is the quietest season. Most local campgrounds stay open, daytime highs typically reach the mid-50s Fahrenheit, and hiking, birdwatching, and cool-weather fishing are the main draws. Snow is rare, though light snow or sleet can occur. Hurricane and tropical-storm remnants can affect the region from late summer into fall, so watch forecasts when booking in September and October.

State park sites at Santee are packed-sand pads with individual water and electric hookups and picnic tables, with many sites accommodating RVs up to about 40 feet. Cypress View has 50 sites on the west side of the park, and Lakeshore has 108 sites on the east side; both have restrooms with hot showers and access to a dump station. Poinsett State Park has 24 sites with water and electric plus 26 tent sites with water only, along with a dump station and camp store. Dense tree cover means some sites cannot accommodate awnings or slide-outs, and cell service is spotty. Private options generally offer full hookups. Outside Inn Campground provides RV sites with hookups on a working farm, and Sweetwater Lake Campground offers water and electric sites with a separate sewer station overlooking a private lake. Firewood brought into any South Carolina state park must be sourced within the state and from less than 50 miles away.
