Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of South Carolina. From March into May and again from late September through November, daytime highs typically sit in the seventies with cool nights, humidity drops, and biting insects are more manageable. Wildflowers on the Sandhills ridge peak in April, and fall color along the hardwood bottoms runs into early November. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and heat indices routinely climbing above one hundred. Shaded sites at Poinsett State Park and lakeside sites at Cypress View - Santee State Park hold up better than open pull-throughs. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and inland Sumter County can still see heavy rain and wind from tropical systems tracking up from the coast. Winters are mild but variable. Highs often reach the mid-fifties, hard freezes are brief, and snow is rare. Water hookups usually stay on, though occasional cold snaps can bring overnight freeze warnings on hose bibs.

Poinsett State Park offers 24 sites with water and electric hookups and 26 tent sites with water only, in a wooded setting with a central bathhouse, hot showers, and a dump station. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, but the loops are narrow and tree cover is heavy, so measure and check site photos before booking a larger rig. All firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away. Sesquicentennial, Lee, and Santee State Parks offer similar state-park amenities: water and electric sites, dump stations, and clean bathhouses, with some full-hookup sites at Lee and at Cypress View - Santee State Park. Columbia / Camden RV Park caters to travelers who want full hookups, longer pull-through sites, and easier interstate access, trading the woods for convenience.
