Camping near Swansea, South Carolina
Swansea sits in Lexington County in the South Carolina Midlands, roughly a half-hour drive southeast of Columbia and within reach of the Congaree River corridor. The town works well as a low-key base for RV travelers who want quick access to the capital, Lake Murray, and Congaree National Park without paying metro-area rates or dealing with city traffic.
Campgrounds in the immediate area lean toward full-hookup private parks on rural land. River Bottom Farms Family Campground and Sweetwater Lake Campground offer traditional family-oriented setups, while Big Rig Friendly RV Resort and Barnyard RV Park cater to larger rigs and longer stays. Cedar Creek Resort Clothing Optional is an adults-only option nearby.
The surrounding landscape is flat to gently rolling pine and hardwood forest cut by blackwater creeks and small farm ponds. Expect two-lane state roads, farm stands, and short drives to grocery and fuel in Swansea itself, Gaston, or West Columbia.
Things to do around Swansea
Congaree National Park is the headline draw, about 30 to 40 minutes east. The park protects one of the largest intact tracts of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the Southeast, with a boardwalk loop, ranger-led canoe trips on Cedar Creek, and primitive backcountry camping for those who want to leave the RV behind for a night.
Lake Murray, northwest of Swansea, offers boat ramps, swimming areas, and dam-area walking paths. Closer in, the Edisto and Congaree rivers are popular for kayaking, tubing, and bass fishing.
Families with kids typically add the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, the South Carolina State Museum, and minor-league baseball at Segra Park. The Cayce Riverwalk gives a paved, stroller-friendly option for evenings.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV camping in this part of South Carolina. From mid-March through May, daytime highs sit in the 70s and low 80s, humidity is manageable, and mosquito pressure is still light. October and November bring cool nights, low rainfall, and reliable weather for outdoor cooking and campfires.
Summers are hot and humid. Afternoon highs in the low 90s are typical from June through August, and thunderstorms build most afternoons. Book sites with shade or full 50-amp service if traveling in this window, and plan water activities for morning hours. Tropical moisture occasionally reaches the Midlands from the coast between August and October.
Winter camping is viable. Daytime highs usually reach the mid to upper 50s, hard freezes are brief, and private campgrounds in the area generally stay open year-round, though pool and splash-pad amenities close from roughly November through March.

How to book campgrounds near Swansea
Private parks in the Swansea area, including River Bottom Farms Family Campground, Big Rig Friendly RV Resort, Sweetwater Lake Campground, Barnyard RV Park, and Cedar Creek Resort Clothing Optional, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus University of South Carolina home-football weekends in fall, fill earliest and should be locked in several months out.
Congaree National Park campsites at Longleaf and Bluff are reserved through Recreation.gov and are tent-only, so they do not accommodate RVs or trailers. Nearby South Carolina State Parks, such as Poinsett and Sesquicentennial, use the state's online reservation system and open bookings up to 13 months in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the campgrounds are mostly paved rural two-lanes with a few gravel or sand approach drives. Sites at Big Rig Friendly RV Resort and Barnyard RV Park are typically pull-through with full hookups suitable for Class A coaches and long fifth wheels. River Bottom Farms Family Campground and Sweetwater Lake Campground lean more family and long-term, with a mix of back-in and pull-through sites.
Cell service is generally usable on major carriers but can drop in wooded pockets. Expect biting insects in warm months, particularly near creeks and low ground, so bring repellent and consider a screen room.
Grocery, propane, and fuel are available in Swansea and along US-321 and US-21. Larger supply runs and RV parts are easiest in West Columbia or Cayce, roughly 20 minutes north.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Swansea%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Swansea?
Good news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Swansea. South Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under standard weight limits, so a Class D license works for every rig on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Then you are ready to roll toward Lake Murray.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside help included?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book through RVezy. Every motorhome rental in Swansea comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built into the booking, so a flat tire on US-321 or a dead battery at a campground is just a quick phone call away. At checkout you choose from protection plan tiers depending on how much coverage you want for items like collision and interior damage. Pick the level that matches your comfort, and head out with peace of mind from Swansea to the coast.

Booking your Swansea RV trip is low-risk. RVezy sets a consistent cancellation policy for all bookings, so the rules are the same on every listing. The exact refund amount depends on how far out your trip is at the time of cancellation. South Carolina sits in the Atlantic hurricane zone (June through November), so if a major weather event affects your trip, RVezy support can walk you through your options. If something changes, just contact RVezy support to review next steps and any available credits or refunds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Swansea RV trip?
Absolutely, and Swansea is a great area for it. Plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Swansea, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Once on the road, your dog will love Sesquicentennial State Park in nearby Columbia, which welcomes leashed dogs on trails, and Dreher Island State Park on Lake Murray has dog-friendly shoreline areas too. Many private campgrounds in the Swansea area also accept pets on standard sites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or breed details, and pack a collapsible water bowl since summer afternoons here regularly hit the low 90s.
southcarolinaparks.com/sesquiCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Swansea?
Yes, RV delivery in Swansea is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome directly to your campground, level it, connect water and power, and walk you through everything before they leave. That means zero towing stress, just show up and start your trip. Popular drop-off areas include private campgrounds in Swansea and Lake Murray-area parks about 30 minutes north. Delivery fees are usually mileage-based, so check each listing's delivery radius or message the host with your campground name for a quick quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Swansea%2C%20South%20CarolinaAre unlimited miles available, and how far can I drive?
Yes, many Swansea hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, and others provide generous daily allowances (typically 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small fee for extras. That is plenty for almost any trip. From Swansea you are about 25 miles to downtown Columbia, 55 miles to Aiken, 115 miles to Charleston, 160 miles to Myrtle Beach, and roughly 200 miles to Asheville's Blue Ridge foothills. Filter listings by Unlimited Mileage for a longer South Carolina RV trip, or pick a daily-allowance listing for short hops to Lake Murray. Either way, the mileage policy appears clearly on every listing before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Swansea%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhere are the best campgrounds near Swansea, SC?

Sesquicentennial State Park in Columbia (about 30 minutes north) has wooded sites with water and electric. Dreher Island State Park on Lake Murray offers lakefront RV sites about 40 minutes north. For a quieter vibe, Lake Wateree State Park is roughly an hour and a half northeast. Aiken State Park to the southwest offers spring-fed lakes and easy access. Pro tip: book South Carolina state park sites through the official reservation system well in advance, especially for spring and fall weekends.
southcarolinaparks.com/When is the best time to visit Swansea in an RV?
Spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November) are the sweet spots for a Swansea RV trip. Daytime highs sit in a comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity is lower, and dogwoods and fall foliage make state parks especially scenic. Summers in the South Carolina Midlands are hot and humid with highs in the low to mid 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so plan early-morning drives and use plenty of AC. Winters are mild (50s by day, 30s at night), which keeps RV rental in South Carolina active nearly year-round. Insider tip: October weekends near Lake Murray are gorgeous and often more affordable than peak summer.
weather.gov/cae/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You will do great, especially in Swansea where roads are flat, traffic is light, and hosts are friendly. First time renting an RV? Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slides, awnings, and dump procedures, so you leave feeling confident. You can also message hosts before booking to ask anything, from is this drivable for a beginner to how do I empty the tanks. Many Swansea-area hosts specialize in first-timers and stock the RV with basics like leveling blocks and a sewer hose. Start with a two-night trip at a nearby campground and you will feel like a pro by checkout.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002138714-For-rentersWhat happens if I break down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on I-26, a battery issue at a Lake Murray campground, or a lockout at Sesquicentennial State Park, one phone call gets help dispatched. Service typically covers tows, jump-starts, tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockouts. Your host is also a quick text away for RV-specific questions like restarting the water pump or resetting a GFCI outlet. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Swansea and you will have zero worries on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trips from Swansea?
Swansea's location makes it a launchpad for Southeast adventures. A classic RV road trip from Swansea heads south to Charleston (about 115 miles) for cobblestone streets and Folly Beach campgrounds. Head about 160 miles east to Myrtle Beach for oceanfront RV resorts. Drive about 70 miles west to Augusta, Georgia for golf country and the Savannah River. For mountain views, point the wheel about 200 miles northwest to Asheville, NC and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Or just 25 miles north sits Columbia and the Congaree National Park boardwalks. Pro tip: cross-border travel into other US states is allowed on RVezy rentals; trips into Mexico are not covered.
scdot.org/How much will fuel cost for my Swansea RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, and South Carolina helps with some of the lowest gas prices in the country. Travel trailers towed by a pickup typically average 10 to 13 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 MPG, and larger Class A coaches return 6 to 8 MPG. For a sample round-trip from Swansea to Charleston (about 230 miles), budget roughly $70 to $100 in fuel for a Class C at current pump prices. Fill up in Swansea or West Columbia, where prices tend to beat highway exits along I-26. Check current South Carolina averages on the EIA website before you go.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For South Carolina state parks near Swansea, the booking window through the official Reserve South Carolina State Parks system opens up to 13 months in advance. That matters most for spring break (March), Memorial Day, July 4th, and October leaf-peeping weekends at popular spots like Sesquicentennial and Dreher Island. Private parks like River Bottom Farms generally accept reservations several months ahead, with a few weeks' notice often enough midweek. Pro tip: if a weekend looks booked, search for Sunday-through-Thursday stays, you will usually find availability and lower rates within just a few days' notice.
southcarolinaparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Swansea?
Easy and beginner-friendly. Swansea sits in the flat Sandhills region of South Carolina, so you will not deal with mountain grades or tight switchbacks like the Blue Ridge. Local routes US-321 and US-178 are wide and carry light traffic, and I-26 (about 10 minutes north) connects you to Columbia and Charleston with standard interstate driving. Watch for two things: summer afternoon thunderstorms that can drop visibility quickly between June and August, and occasional deer crossings on rural roads at dawn and dusk. If you are nervous about merging onto I-26 near Columbia, ask your host about delivery so the RV is already parked at your campground.
www511.sc.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Swansea?
Most campgrounds near Swansea are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Expect full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) at private parks like River Bottom Farms, plus pools, laundry, and dump stations at many locations. South Carolina state parks like Sesquicentennial and Lake Wateree typically offer water and electric at sites, with centralized dump stations and bathhouses with hot showers. Wi-Fi availability varies by park. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 90-degree elbow connector, two small items that make hookups easier at almost every Midlands campground.
southcarolinaparks.com/What's included inside a typical RVezy rental in Swansea?
More than you might expect. A typical RV rental in Swansea, SC comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed (plus bunks or convertible dinettes for the family), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning (a must in the South Carolina summer), heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, an outdoor awning, and sometimes a generator for off-grid stays. Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are often available as small add-ons. Browse listings on RVezy to see exactly what is included for each rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Swansea%2C%20South%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose?
Lots of helpful extras, and you will see them all on the listing before you book. Common Swansea add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits with pots and dishes, generators for boondocking, camp chair sets, bikes, and outdoor grills. Pickup is straightforward: meet at the host's home for a 30 to 45-minute walkthrough, or pay for delivery to your campground (often easier for first-timers). Mileage policies vary per listing, from daily allowances to truly unlimited mileage, and they are spelled out clearly. Pro tip: bundling delivery with a linen kit saves loading time on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Swansea%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book. Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on the RV's size and value) that is handled separately from the booking payment and authorized on your card before pickup. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the right fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff and follow the host's instructions on dumping and refueling.
