Campgrounds and RV parks near Varnville, SC

History is the main draw close to town. Rivers Bridge State Historic Site is the only state historic site in South Carolina that preserves a Civil War battlefield, and at the Salkehatchie River crossing, 1,200 Confederate soldiers dug in behind earthen fortifications to face roughly 5,000 Union troops advancing on Columbia. Ranger-guided tours and special programs help educate visitors about the battle and military life during the Civil War. Outdoor activities are concentrated at the private campgrounds. Broxton Bridge offers a modern Helice range, a 15-station sporting clays course, pistol and rifle range, wing-shooting clinics, fishing, and trail riding. The Point South KOA and The Oaks add pools, fishing ponds, and short walking trails on site. Day trips reach the historic districts of Beaufort, Charleston, and Savannah, plus the beaches of Hilton Head, all within roughly an hour to ninety minutes.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Lowcountry. From March through May, days warm quickly, wildflowers appear, and humidity is still manageable. October and November bring cooler nights, lower rainfall, and clearer skies, which pairs well with Civil War battlefield visits and river paddling. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heavy insect activity in wooded and riverfront sites. In this part of South Carolina, summers are hot and oppressive, winters are short and cold, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round, with temperatures typically varying from about 38 to 92 degrees Fahrenheit. Peak Atlantic hurricane season runs from August through October and can bring tropical rain bands inland. Winter is the quiet season. Freezes occur but rarely last long, and most private RV parks in the area, including Broxton Bridge Plantation and The Oaks At Point South RV Resort, stay open year-round. Snowbird traffic along I-95 picks up from January through March.

Sites in this area range from tightly packed resort-style parks to spread-out rural properties on former plantations. Broxton Bridge Campgrounds has 102 spacious sites, including options for primitive camping, designed with pull-thru convenience for RVs and horse trailers. The setting is remote, and campers should plan grocery runs for nearby towns rather than expecting big-box stores next door. Thousand Trails runs The Oaks at Point South in Yemassee, accommodating rigs up to 80 feet with full hookups including electric, water, sewer, and cable TV, with live oaks draped in Spanish moss providing canopy shade and gravel surfaces that can turn muddy during rain. Expect Lowcountry conditions overall: mosquitoes at dusk, occasional soft ground after storms, and long, straight rural roads on the drive in.
