Campgrounds and RV parks near Wedgefield, SC

Poinsett State Park is the closest base for hiking, paddling, and fishing. The 10-acre park lake can be used for fishing and jonboat rentals, and trails climb the High Hills ridges before dropping into blackwater swamp. Some connect to the Palmetto Trail, which continues through the neighboring Manchester State Forest. Lake Marion is the main draw at Santee State Park, sitting on the shores of South Carolina's largest lake. The park has three hiking trails and one biking trail, including two one-mile nature trails, a half-mile sinkhole pond trail, and a seven-mile bike route. Boat tours into the lake's cypress-studded swampy areas depart from the park's marina and store, and anglers target striped bass, catfish, and bream on the open water.

The Sumter County area has a humid subtropical climate with a long, warm shoulder season on either side of a hot summer. Sumter experiences hot summers and cool winters, and the area is fairly wet with wetter summers, when heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with mild days and cool nights. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon storms, but it is also peak season for Lake Marion fishing and swimming. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, so travelers should watch tropical forecasts when booking late-summer and fall trips. Winter is short and generally mild, with occasional cold snaps. State park campgrounds in this part of South Carolina stay open year-round, and cooler months are a good time for hiking and birding when biting insects are gone. Travelers heading to the Lakeshore campground at Santee State Park should note ongoing roadwork and repaving on the East Entrance Road, with only one lane open at a time.

At Poinsett State Park, the campground provides 24 sites with individual water and electrical hookups and 26 tent sites with individual water. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, the campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers, and all sites include water, a picnic table, and a fire ring. A dump station is available, and dense tree cover means some sites cannot accommodate awnings or slide-outs. Santee State Park runs two distinct loops. The 50-site Cypress View Campground sits on the west side of the park, and the 108-site Lakeshore Campground is on the east side. Each site is packed sand with individual water and electrical hookups and a picnic table, both campgrounds have restrooms with hot showers, and many sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. All South Carolina State Parks enforce a firewood rule: firewood brought into the parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away.
