Campgrounds near Winnsboro
Winnsboro sits in Fairfield County in the South Carolina Piedmont, roughly 30 miles north of Columbia and within a straightforward drive of Charlotte. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because two river and lake systems, the Broad River and Lake Wateree, bracket it on either side of Interstate 77.
Camping options range from private full-hookup parks to South Carolina State Park campgrounds. Broad River Campground and Woodsmoke Campground are private operations in the Winnsboro corridor that book directly through their own websites. Lake Wateree State Park sits on Desportes Island on Lake Wateree, 17 miles from Winnsboro and 14 miles from Ridgeway, on a 238-acre site with 100 camping sites, picnic pads, an on-site tackle shop with boat refueling, and a 2-mile nature trail. Sesquicentennial State Park lies south toward Columbia near the Sandhills, and Chester State Park sits to the northwest along the route toward Charlotte, giving RV travelers three state park options within an hour of town.
Things to do near Winnsboro
Water recreation drives most trip planning. Lake Wateree is a fishermen's delight with significant populations of crappie, bream, largemouth bass, catfish and striped bass, and hosts numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year. The park offers the free Tackle Loaner Program, coordinated by SCDNR, and kayak rentals, both available at the park's tackle shop.
Inland options add variety for families. Sesquicentennial State Park spreads across roughly 1,400 acres of pine forest with a small lake for fishing and non-motorized boating, miles of hiking trails, a designated mountain biking trail, playgrounds, a splash pad, and a two-acre off-leash dog park. Chester State Park centers on a lake surrounded by a nature trail through pine forest, with a community building, archery range, and johnboat rentals, plus a disc golf course that draws older kids and teens.

Winnsboro sits in a humid subtropical zone. The climate features hot and humid summers and mild winters, with rainfall spread across the year and temperatures typically remaining above freezing during most winter days. That pattern shapes the RV camping calendar.
Spring and fall are the prime windows. Daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s and cooler nights make hiking, paddling and disc golf comfortable, and area state parks stay open year round, though some campground loops close seasonally. Summer brings heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, so many campers plan lake time for mornings and shaded activities for the afternoons.
Winter camping remains workable for RVs with heat. Snowfall is rare in this part of the Piedmont, so shoulder-season trips almost never face snow closures, though overnight lows near freezing are common in January and February. Loop 1 at Sesquicentennial closes for part of the cold season while Loop 2 stays open year round.

Super easy booking and Jeremy was very responsive to all my questions as a first time rv renter. It was all very smooth and super convenient with the delivery option. They were there and set up before we even arrived. The camper was also super nice with a lot of upgraded features. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others!!

How to book a campsite
South Carolina State Parks use a central reservation system that covers Lake Wateree, Sesquicentennial and Chester. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, and requests less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. Minimum length of stay is 2 nights, and maximum length of stay is 14 nights per site. Check-in for camping is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 12:00 p.m.
Site counts are limited, so booking early for weekends and holidays is wise. Private parks such as Broad River Campground and Woodsmoke Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone rather than through the state system.
What to expect on site
Hookup availability varies by park. At Lake Wateree, the original Riverside loop offers 72 sites with 20-amp and 30-amp electrical service and water hookup, along with a dump station outside the campground loop. The newer Taylor Creek loop opened in 2020 and adds 28 sites with 20-amp, 30-amp, and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections.
Sesquicentennial's campground offers 84 sites arranged in two loops with packed sand or gravel surfaces; sites 1-29 feature 20/30/50 amp electric service, sites 1-9 provide full hookups including sewer, and sites 36-84 have 20/30 amp electric. At Chester State Park, expect water and electric sites with a mix of back-in and pull-through pads and access to hot showers. Bring a surge protector and leveling blocks; firewood must be sourced locally and from within South Carolina, from less than 50 miles away, to prevent pest spread.

You can book with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start. Full policy details are available in the RVezy Help Center and your booking confirmation, so you'll always know exactly where you stand. southcarolinaparks.com/lake-watereeCan a host deliver the RV to my campsite in Winnsboro?
Yes, RV delivery in Winnsboro is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress, and many local hosts offer it. They'll drop the motorhome or travel trailer right at Lake Wateree State Park or your driveway in Ridgeway or Blythewood, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. This is the best option if it's your first time renting an RV or you don't want to tow. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your destination and dates. Most charge a per-mile delivery fee, so closer drop-offs keep costs low.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Winnsboro%2C%20South%20CarolinaHow many miles do I get with my RV rental, and are unlimited mileage options available?
You've got flexibility: every host sets their own mileage policy, and many Winnsboro-area hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with reasonable per-mile fees beyond that. If you're planning a longer South Carolina RV trip, look for listings that advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for road trips from Winnsboro down to Charleston (about 130 miles) or up to Asheville, NC (about 180 miles). The mileage policy is shown right on each listing page before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: map your route in advance and pick the package that matches your plan, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage fees.

weather.gov/cae/I've never rented an RV before. Is renting in Winnsboro beginner-friendly?
You're going to do great, and Winnsboro is a wonderful place for first time renting an RV. Local hosts on RVezy give every guest a hands-on walkthrough at pickup: how the slide-outs work, how to dump tanks, how to light the propane stove, the whole deal. The roads around Fairfield County are wide, lightly trafficked, and far less stressful than driving in Columbia or Charleston traffic. Many hosts even offer delivery and setup at Lake Wateree State Park, so you can skip driving the rig entirely on day one. Pro tip: message your host with any questions before booking, they want your first trip to go perfectly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether it's a flat tire on Highway 34 outside Winnsboro, a dead battery at Lake Wateree, or a propane issue at your campsite, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a great first resource since they know their RV inside and out, and RVezy customer support is available before, during and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate. That five-minute prep saves real time if anything goes sideways.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are some great road trip destinations from Winnsboro, SC?
You're sitting on a fantastic launchpad. A popular RV road trip from Winnsboro heads south 30 miles to Columbia for the Riverbanks Zoo and Congaree National Park's old-growth cypress boardwalks. Charleston is about 130 miles southeast (2.5 hours) with historic downtown and Folly Beach. The Blue Ridge Mountains around Table Rock State Park sit roughly 140 miles northwest, and Asheville, NC is 180 miles north for breweries and the Biltmore. Myrtle Beach is 175 miles east for that classic Atlantic boardwalk. International travel note: Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, but US road trips up the East Coast are wide open. Pro tip: build in a stop at Carolina Adventure World, just 6 miles south of town, for ATV trails.
scdot.org/travel/travel-maps.aspxHow much should I budget for fuel on a Winnsboro RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you'd think. Most Class C motorhomes in Winnsboro average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get a friendlier 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg while towing). South Carolina has one of the lowest fuel taxes in the Southeast, so gas prices in Winnsboro typically run 20 to 40 cents per gallon below the national average. Fill up in town before heading to Lake Wateree, since options thin out near the park. Pro tip: GasBuddy and apps like Upside reliably find the cheapest stations along I-77 and US-321 for your motorhome rental Winnsboro adventure.
dor.sc.gov/tax/motor-fuelHow far in advance should I book a campground near Winnsboro?
Earlier is better, especially for South Carolina state parks. The South Carolina State Parks reservation system opens 13 months in advance at reserve.southcarolinaparks.com, and Lake Wateree State Park's waterfront and full-hookup sites book up fast for summer weekends. Aim to book popular weekends 4 to 6 months ahead; midweek or shoulder-season trips can often be snagged 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, try a Sunday-to-Thursday booking, availability opens up dramatically once the weekend crowd clears.
reserve.southcarolinaparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Winnsboro, SC?
Driving an RV around Winnsboro is refreshingly easy. US-321 and SC Highway 215 are wide, well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle Piedmont rolling hills, no mountain switchbacks or coastal narrow bridges. I-77 is just east of town for fast travel to Columbia (30 miles south) or Charlotte, NC (75 miles north). Watch for summer afternoon thunderstorms (June-August) that can drop heavy rain quickly, deer crossings at dawn and dusk in Fairfield County, and the occasional logging truck on rural routes. The downtown Winnsboro historic district has tight streets, so park larger rigs at the edge and walk in. Pro tip: keep an eye on SCDOT's 511 traveler information service for real-time road conditions.
511sc.org/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Winnsboro?
You'll find solid amenities at every major option. Lake Wateree State Park's Taylor Creek loop offers 50-amp full hookups (electric, water, sewer), hot-shower bathhouses, a dump station, a tackle shop with kayak rentals, and a boat ramp; the older Riverside loop has 20/30-amp electric and water with a centralized dump station. Broad River Campground provides 145 full-hookup sites with 20/30/50-amp service, free Wi-Fi, laundry, and a dog park. Both have potable water fills near the entrance. Cell service is famously spotty inside Lake Wateree State Park, so download maps and any Netflix episodes ahead of time. Pro tip: bring a water pressure regulator, Lake Wateree's water pressure runs strong and can damage RV plumbing.
southcarolinaparks.com/lake-wateree/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Winnsboro?
You'll be surprised how complete these rigs are. Most Winnsboro RV rentals come fully equipped: a real bed (queen or king in larger units), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning (essential for South Carolina summers), heat, dining table, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a TV, and a growing number of hosts offer Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink as an add-on. Class A and larger Class C motorhomes often have onboard generators for off-grid power. Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included. Pro tip: a campervan rental Winnsboro guests love is the Class B option, smaller, easier to drive, and still has the kitchen and bed you need.
energy.gov/energysaver/rv-energy-efficiencyWhat add-ons and pickup options do Winnsboro RV hosts typically offer?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packages ($25-50), kitchen kits with pots, pans and utensils ($25-40), camping chairs and outdoor tables, generators for off-grid stays at Sumter National Forest, bike racks, and even kayaks or stand-up paddleboards (a Lake Wateree must-have). Most hosts offer self-serve pickup at their home in Winnsboro, Blythewood or Ridgeway, while many provide delivery to nearby campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage is set per listing, often 100-150 free miles per day. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book, hosts often discount packages, and snag the SUP rental, paddling Lake Wateree at sunrise is a memory you'll keep forever.
dnr.sc.gov/water/waterprogs.htmlHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Winnsboro, you'll pay the rental total through RVezy's secure platform (no cash handed to hosts). A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment; the amount is shown on each listing and is released back to you after the trip, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition it went out. The protection plan you select at checkout further reduces your out-of-pocket risk for accidental damage. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround video at pickup AND return, with the host present. It's the single best way to keep your security deposit drama-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for an unforgettable Winnsboro RV trip?
Here's the move locals love: time your trip to catch downtown Winnsboro's town clock, one of the longest continuously running town clocks in the United States, then base your family RV trip Winnsboro adventure out of Lake Wateree State Park. Spend mornings fishing the lake, afternoons riding ATVs at Carolina Adventure World just a few miles south, and evenings grilling lakefront. Pair it with a day trip to Congaree National Park (about an hour south) to walk the Boardwalk Loop through old-growth cypress trees, it's South Carolina's only national park and stunning at golden hour. Pro tip: pack mosquito repellent in summer, the Midlands' humidity makes bugs serious business.
