Campgrounds near Allardt, Tennessee
Allardt sits on the Cumberland Plateau in Fentress County, Tennessee, minutes from two of the state's largest public land units: Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, which encompasses 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau and protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries, with miles of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs, and Pickett CCC Memorial State Park to the west. Most RV travelers base out of private parks in and around Allardt and Jamestown, then drive into the federal and state units for day trips.
Close-in options include Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins, Laurel Creek Campground, Spruce Creek Campground and Stables, and True West Campground Stables & Mercantile. Equestrian travelers also use East Fork Stables, which caters to horse camping on the plateau. These private parks typically offer the electric, water, and sewer hookups that in-park federal sites do not always provide.
Big South Fork itself contains five campgrounds: Bandy Creek in Tennessee and Blue Heron in Kentucky are developed sites with many amenities, Alum Ford in Kentucky offers a limited number of primitive campsites, and Bear Creek and Station Camp are highly developed equestrian campgrounds, giving RV travelers a mix of full-service private stays and rustic public sites within a short drive of Allardt.
Things to do near Allardt
Big South Fork is the primary draw. Numerous trails snake through the recreation area, offering mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding for visitors, and paddlers run the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River through its sandstone gorges. Overlooks at the East Rim, Twin Arches, and the Angel Falls area give families short walks with big payoffs.
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, immediately west of Allardt, adds natural bridges, small lakes for swimming and paddling, and some of the darkest night skies in the eastern United States for stargazing. Horse camps such as East Fork Stables and Spruce Creek Campground and Stables put riders on connector routes toward the Big South Fork backcountry.
In town, Allardt is known for the annual Great Pumpkin Festival each October, a useful anchor date when planning a fall trip.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel on the plateau. April and May bring wildflowers, running waterfalls, and mild days, while October delivers hardwood color across the gorges and typically the driest weather of the year. Weekends during peak leaf season fill first, so lock in sites well ahead.
Summer is warm and humid but tempered by plateau elevation, and it is the main paddling and swimming season. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, and river levels can rise quickly after heavy rain. Sites at Bandy Creek and the private parks around Jamestown tend to book heaviest from Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus the July 4 holiday week.
Winter is cold, damp, and quiet. Some equestrian and primitive facilities inside Big South Fork operate on reduced schedules, and some private parks reduce services or close cabins entirely. Travelers seeking winter stays should confirm hookups, bathhouse heat, and gate hours directly with each campground before booking.
How to book
Federal campgrounds inside Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area are reserved through Recreation.gov, with reservations available up to 180 days in advance. For peak season visits it is best to book as early as the window opens; individual facility pages list specific availability. Alum Ford Campground on the Kentucky side offers a limited number of primitive campsites and does not accept advance reservations.
Private parks around Allardt, including Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins, Laurel Creek Campground, Spruce Creek Campground and Stables, and True West Campground Stables & Mercantile, are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. For fall color weekends and the Great Pumpkin Festival, reserve two to three months out.
What to expect on the ground
The plateau sits around 1,500 to 1,800 feet in elevation, so nights run cooler than in Nashville or Knoxville even in midsummer. Roads into the private parks and to trailheads are paved but narrow and winding in places; large Class A rigs should map the route in advance and avoid unmarked forest roads.
Cell service is workable at the Bandy Creek check-in area, and WiFi is accessible at the camp store across the road, but coverage is spotty across the wider recreation area. Download offline maps, park brochures, and any Recreation.gov confirmations before leaving town. Groceries, fuel, and propane are easiest to source in Jamestown, a few miles north of Allardt.
Developed sites at Bandy Creek combine traditional woods camping with flush toilets, hot showers and electric hookups, accommodate both RV and tent camping, and provide spacious campsites with picnic areas and plenty of shade. Expect wildlife including deer, wild turkey, and occasional black bear, and store food accordingly.
