Camping near Altamont, Tennessee
Altamont sits atop the Cumberland Plateau in Grundy County, Tennessee, roughly midway between Nashville and Chattanooga. The town serves as a practical base for exploring South Cumberland and Savage Gulf State Parks, a system that spans roughly 31,000 acres across four counties and includes more than 90 miles of trail, waterfalls, sandstone bluffs, and rocky gorges. RV travelers use Altamont because it is close to trailheads yet still within reach of grocery stores, fuel, and highway access via I-24.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to rustic state park sites. Greeter Falls Campground offers RV sites with electric and water hookups less than a half mile from the Greeter Falls Trailhead, with several full-hookup pull-through options. Bigfoot RV Park and Campground occupies a large farm property with pull-through hookup sites and on-site recreation. Big Mouth Cave Retreat, near Pelham, caters to concertgoers walking to The Caverns music venue.
For state park camping, Foster Falls - South Cumberland State Park is the only vehicle-accessible campground in the park system nearby. Camp Chet provides a private, forested alternative on Whitwell Mountain.
Things to do around Altamont
Waterfall hiking is the headline activity. The Greeter Falls loop connects three waterfalls and the Blue Hole swimming area within a short walk. Foster Falls draws hikers and rock climbers to its bluff line, where a 60-foot waterfall drops into a gorge carved by Little Gizzard Creek. Savage Gulf trails include Stone Door, Collins Gulf, and the longer Fiery Gizzard route toward Tracy City.
Beyond hiking, The Caverns in Pelham hosts underground concerts throughout the year. Bigfoot RV Park and Campground runs recreation on its farm property. Families with younger kids often stick to the easier Blue Hole and Broad Tree Falls trails, since sections near Upper and Lower Greeter Falls have sheer drop-offs that can be dangerous when wet.
Swimming holes, blackberry picking in summer, and stargazing from the plateau round out a typical trip.

Summer is peak season. Temperatures typically climb into the mid-80s and humidity is high, but the plateau elevation keeps evenings cooler than in the surrounding valleys. Swimming holes at Blue Hole and Foster Falls draw heavy weekend crowds from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and popular sites at Foster Falls and Greeter Falls fill weeks in advance.
Spring and fall are the best hiking windows. Wildflowers bloom from March into May, and October delivers reliable color across the hardwoods. Both shoulder seasons see cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lighter trail traffic. Spring is also a wet stretch: creeks run full, waterfalls are at their loudest, and rocky trails can be slick.
Winter camping is possible but demands preparation. Overnight lows dip below freezing, occasional ice and snow hit the plateau, and some private campgrounds reduce operations. Foster Falls Campground stays open year-round with heated showers, though sites have no water or electric hookups and gas generators are not permitted.

How to book
Tennessee State Parks handles all reservations for Foster Falls - South Cumberland State Park and the backcountry campgrounds through its online system at reserve.tnstateparks.com. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, a non-refundable advance reservation fee applies per site, and most sites require a two-night minimum stay. Check-in is 12:00 pm and check-out is 10:00 am, both Central time.
Private campgrounds use their own systems. Greeter Falls Campground, Bigfoot RV Park and Campground, Big Mouth Cave Retreat, and Camp Chet each take bookings through their own websites or third-party platforms. For summer weekends and any date near a Caverns concert, book eight or more weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
The Cumberland Plateau is rural. Cell service is spotty in the gorges and at some campgrounds, so download offline maps before heading out. Grocery runs are easiest from Altamont, Tracy City, or Monteagle, and the closest full-service fuel and supermarkets are along US-41 and I-24.
Site surfaces vary. Foster Falls campsites are gravel and mostly level, with some on a slight incline, and no gas generators are permitted. Greeter Falls Campground offers wooded sites, including pull-throughs with full hookups suitable for larger rigs. Bigfoot RV Park and Campground has spacious pull-through sites on its 500-acre property.
Black bears live in the park system, so store food properly. Copperheads have been reported on trails and near woodpiles. Only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed inside Tennessee State Parks.

Plans change, and RVezy gets that. Every booking is backed by the standard RVezy cancellation policy (not set by individual hosts), which includes a grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. You will see the exact terms during checkout and inside your booking dashboard. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Altamont RV trip?
Absolutely, and Altamont is a fantastic dog-friendly base. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find pet-friendly RV rental Altamont options where furry passengers are welcome, sometimes for a small cleaning fee set by the host. Once you're here, dogs are welcome on leash throughout South Cumberland State Park's hiking trails, including the popular Greeter Falls loop and the Stone Door trail. Grand View Cabins and RV Park even has full-hookup pet-friendly sites, and Greeter Falls Campground includes a private small-dog play area. Pro tip: pack a tick remover, the wooded plateau trails can be buggy from May through September.
tnstateparks.com/parks/south-cumberlandCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Altamont?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Altamont service, meaning they'll tow the trailer or drive the motorhome to your campsite at Greeter Falls Campground, Foster Falls, or Grand View Cabins and RV Park, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything before handing over the keys. This is a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV or if you're flying into Nashville or Chattanooga and don't want to tow. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host to confirm distance and any flat delivery fee.
tnstateparks.com/parks/south-cumberlandHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Altamont?
Mileage on RVezy is set by each host, and many Altamont listings include a generous daily allowance (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Altamont sits right in the middle of incredible drives: Chattanooga is about 70 miles south (1.5 hours), Nashville is 95 miles northwest (about 2 hours), Fall Creek Falls State Park is just 40 miles north, and the Great Smoky Mountains are roughly 200 miles east. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning a bigger Tennessee loop, message the host to negotiate added miles upfront.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsWhere are the best campgrounds near Altamont?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Altamont center on the South Cumberland Plateau: Greeter Falls Campground (just minutes from Altamont with primitive and RV sites, plus walking access to four waterfalls), Grand View Cabins and RV Park (full hookups, pet-friendly, scenic plateau setting), Foster Falls Small Wild Area Campground inside South Cumberland State Park (rustic sites near a 60-foot waterfall), and Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground 40 miles north (full hookups, swimming, and Tennessee's tallest waterfall). For RV camping Altamont with quick highway access, Outback Kamping in Tullahoma is about an hour west. Book at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead for fall color weekends.
tnstateparks.com/parks/south-cumberlandWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Altamont?
Altamont shines almost year-round thanks to its mild plateau climate. April through early June is glorious, with wildflowers, waterfalls running full from spring rain, and daytime highs in the 70s. Mid-September through early November is peak time, when fall foliage on the Cumberland Plateau explodes in red and gold and temperatures sit in the comfortable 60s and 70s. Summer (June to August) is warmer (mid-80s) but cooler than lowland Tennessee thanks to Altamont's 1,860-foot elevation. Winter is mild (40s by day, occasional snow), and many RVezy hosts rent year-round. Local insider tip: visit during the Grundy County Fall Color Cruise-In to catch the plateau at its absolute peak.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Altamont?
You've got this, and Altamont is a great place to learn. First time renting an RV here works in your favor: traffic is light, Highway 56 and Highway 108 are wide and well-maintained, and most drives to nearby trailheads and campgrounds take under 30 minutes. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, and the propane and water systems. You can also message the host with questions before you book. Pro tip: start your trip with a short drive to Greeter Falls Campground (just 6 miles from Altamont) to get comfortable behind the wheel before tackling longer routes.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Altamont includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat tire on Highway 56, a dead battery at Foster Falls, or a propane issue at your campsite, one phone call gets help dispatched. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since they know their RV best and often respond within minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip as a second backstop. Tip: snap photos at pickup and save the roadside assistance number in your phone, then enjoy the plateau knowing help is always a tap away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Altamont RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes for most US travel, with a couple of clear rules. A cross-state RV road trip from Altamont is allowed, popular routes include heading south to Chattanooga and the North Georgia mountains (about 75 miles), east to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (around 200 miles), or north to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky (about 150 miles). Travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts depending on their insurance, so confirm in writing through RVezy messaging before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Plan your route, message the host with your itinerary, and you are good to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Altamont RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item, but it's predictable. Class C motorhomes around Altamont typically average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 15 to 20 mpg, and gas-powered Class A rigs come in around 7 to 10 mpg. Tennessee gas prices are consistently below the national average, often around $2.90 to $3.20 per gallon in the Altamont and Tracy City area. For a 3-day, 200-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $70 to $90 in fuel. Pro tip: top up in Manchester or McMinnville before heading deeper into the plateau, since stations in tiny Altamont can be limited on Sundays.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Altamont?
The earlier the better, especially for state parks. Tennessee State Parks like South Cumberland (Foster Falls), Fall Creek Falls, and Rock Island accept reservations up to 12 months in advance through tnstateparks.com, and prime fall-color weekends in October book out months ahead. For private campgrounds like Grand View Cabins and RV Park or Greeter Falls Campground, 4 to 8 weeks out is usually plenty outside of peak season. Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Thursday) at Foster Falls and Savage Gulf almost always have last-minute openings, even in October. Book your RVezy rental first, then lock in your campsite right after.
tnstateparks.com/about/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Altamont?
Driving around Altamont is genuinely relaxing compared to big-city RV trips. Highway 56 (the main route through town), Highway 108, and Highway 50 are paved two-lane roads with light traffic and scenic views. You'll encounter some curves and elevation changes as you cross the Cumberland Plateau (Altamont sits at about 1,860 feet), so take it slow on descents toward Tracy City and the Sequatchie Valley. Winter occasionally brings ice or light snow at higher elevations, so check the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) SmartWay map before December through February trips. Avoid narrow forest service roads in state natural areas unless your host's RV is rated for them. Otherwise, easy cruising.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities do campgrounds near Altamont offer?
Most Altamont-area campgrounds cover the essentials and then some. Grand View Cabins and RV Park offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi. Greeter Falls Campground has both primitive sites and RV sites with electric and water, a bathhouse, a camp store, and a dog park. Foster Falls Campground inside South Cumberland State Park is more rustic (no hookups, vault toilets) but unbeatable for hikers. For dumping and freshwater fill-ups between stops, Fall Creek Falls State Park (40 miles north) has a dump station open to day visitors for a small fee. Tip: confirm hookup type with your campground so you know whether to request your host's surge protector and freshwater hose.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Altamont?
More than you'd expect, and often everything you need. Most motorhome rental Altamont and travel trailer listings on RVezy come fully equipped: a real bed (queen or king is common), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (AC and furnace), and dining seating with seatbelts in motorized rigs. Many hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi and onboard generators are common on Class C and Class A rentals but vary by listing, so check the amenities section. Tip: filter for Generator if you're planning to boondock near Stone Door or Savage Gulf overlooks.
tnstateparks.com/parks/savage-gulfWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make customizing easy. Popular add-ons for an Altamont RV trip include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane fire pits, and kitchen kits, each priced by the host. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting spot, and many offer delivery directly to Greeter Falls Campground, Grand View Cabins and RV Park, or Foster Falls for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary, so check the listing's free daily miles and per-mile overage rate before you book. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens to skip the towing learning curve entirely on your first trip.
tnstateparks.com/parks/south-cumberlandHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at the time of booking with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough walk-around with photos at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks if required. Easy in, easy out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the local insider move when planning an RV trip from Altamont?
Here's the tip locals love: build your trip around the Big Four waterfalls of the South Cumberland region, all within 30 minutes of Altamont. Start with Greeter Falls (a 50-foot double waterfall with a swimming hole), then Foster Falls (60 feet, with a dramatic bluff), then the Stone Door overlook hike, and finish with Savage Falls in Savage Gulf State Park. Anchor at Grand View Cabins and RV Park or Greeter Falls Campground for full hookups. A cheap RV rental Altamont booking midweek plus this loop is one of the best-value family RV trip Altamont itineraries in Tennessee. Pack swim shoes, the limestone is slippery.
