Camping near Baxter, Tennessee
Baxter sits in Putnam County on the Eastern Highland Rim of Middle Tennessee, roughly ten miles west of Cookeville and within easy reach of Center Hill Lake, the Caney Fork River, and Burgess Falls. The terrain is forested and hilly, giving RV travellers a mix of lakeside sites, private RV parks, and a state-park campground within a short drive.
Options cluster around two anchors. Old Mill Camp, Camp Luna, and Made In The Shade RV Park serve travellers looking for private RV amenities close to town, while Frank's at Cane Hollow in nearby Sparta pairs sites with an on-site restaurant. Edgar Evins State Park, on the shore of Center Hill Lake, is the largest public option in the area.
The location works well for families splitting time between water recreation on Center Hill Lake, waterfall hikes at Burgess Falls State Park, and easy interstate access along I-40 between Nashville and Knoxville.
Things to do near Baxter
Center Hill Lake is the main draw. The reservoir covers roughly 18,000 acres and supports boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling, with marinas offering rentals. Edgar Evins State Park maintains a marina on the lake, along with hiking trails and an observation tower above the Visitor Center for wide water views.
Burgess Falls State Natural Area, a short drive from Baxter, features a chain of waterfalls on the Falling Water River. The Caney Fork River, which feeds Center Hill Lake, is known for clear water and trout fishing, along with kayaking and canoeing.
On land, families can hike forested trails at Edgar Evins, watch for bald eagles that nest around the lake, and drive to nearby Cookeville for supplies, restaurants, and the Cookeville Depot Museum.

The area has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cooler nights, and manageable humidity. Fall brings hardwood color across the ridges above Center Hill Lake and lower bug pressure on the trails.
Summer is hot and humid, with July and August highs regularly in the upper eighties. This is peak season on the lake, so weekends at Edgar Evins State Park and popular private parks fill well in advance. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and July ranks among the wettest months.
Winters are cool rather than harsh, with occasional cold snaps, ice, and light snow. December is typically the wettest month, and some private campgrounds reduce services or close for the season. The Edgar Evins campground is open year-round, and quiet weekdays in late fall and winter appeal to campers looking for solitude.
How to book campsites near Baxter
Edgar Evins State Park uses the Tennessee State Parks reservation system, and sites can be booked up to one year in advance. Most campsites require a minimum two-night stay, and a non-refundable reservation fee applies per site. Reservations can be cancelled up to and including two days prior to arrival with a refund of campground fees minus the reservation fee; cancellations made one day out or same-day forfeit additional nightly charges.
Private parks in the area, including Frank's at Cane Hollow, Old Mill Camp, Camp Luna, and Made In The Shade RV Park, generally take reservations directly online or by phone. For summer weekends and holidays on Center Hill Lake, book several weeks out. Weekday and shoulder-season stays are usually easier to secure on shorter notice.
What to expect on arrival
Edgar Evins is unusual: RV sites sit on raised wooden platforms built out over the hillside above Center Hill Lake. Platforms accommodate rigs roughly 28 to 40 feet, but grades vary and some approach ramps are steep, so match your site to your rig length and check reviews before booking. Sites include water and electric hookups, and the campground has a dump station, bathhouses with hot showers, and a seasonal camp store open March through October.
Private parks near Baxter and Sparta tend to offer full hookups, gravel or paved pads, and easier level access. Cell reception is generally solid along the I-40 corridor and thinner in the ravines around the lake. Only certified heat-treated firewood is permitted in the state park. Bring layers for cool evenings and expect ticks on wooded trails.

tnstateparks.com/parks/edgar-evinsWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Baxter?
Baxter shines for RV camping nearly year-round thanks to its mild Upper Cumberland climate. Late April through early June is the sweet spot: temperatures generally range from the 60s to the low 80s, Cummins Falls and Burgess Falls roar with spring runoff, and the dogwoods are in bloom. July and August are warm (highs near 88) and perfect for Center Hill Lake swimming and boating. September and October bring crisp air, fall colors on the Cumberland Plateau, and quieter campgrounds. Winters are mild (highs in the 40s and 50s) with occasional freezes, so cold-weather RVing is doable if your rental has heated tanks. Pro tip: book holiday weekends like Memorial Day at Edgar Evins six to nine months out.
weather.gov/ohx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually know how to use it?
Yes, and that's the beauty of peer-to-peer rentals: every host on RVezy gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing how to run the generator, slide-outs, awning, water system, propane, and dump valves. If anything feels foggy later, just message the host directly through the RVezy app. For your first time renting an RV in the hilly Baxter area, ask for a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet) so you can navigate Interstate 40 exits and platform campsites at Edgar Evins with ease. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop before heading to your campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180614-GuestsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so a flat tire on Interstate 40 or a dead battery near Center Hill Lake gets handled quickly. Your host is just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions about how to relight the water heater or reset a breaker, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there, and cross-border trips into Canada may be possible with specific host approval, so message before booking. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host and download offline maps for the Cumberland Plateau's spotty cell zones.

Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly on the Cumberland Plateau, so check radar before heading out. Pro tip: use Highway 70N as a scenic, RV-friendly alternative to busier downtown Cookeville streets.
