Campgrounds near Benton, Tennessee

Benton sits in Polk County in southeast Tennessee, positioned between the Hiwassee River corridor and the Cherokee National Forest. A 23-mile stretch of the Hiwassee River, extending from the North Carolina state line to U.S. Route 411, was the first river to be designated by the State Scenic River Program in 1972. The area functions as a base camp for whitewater rafting, trout fishing, and forest recreation, with the town of Benton serving as the seat of Polk County and a supply stop off U.S. Highway 411. RV travelers typically choose between two categories of sites: private full-hookup parks and primitive public campgrounds. Rivers RV Park Campground and Whitewater RV Park serve travelers who need power, water, and sewer connections close to the Ocoee. Adventures Unlimited offers a mixed tent, RV, and cabin operation tied to a rafting outfitter, and Gee Creek Campground, run by the state park, is the region's best-known public option. In September 2025, the park, which had been called the Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park since 1983, was split into two separate parks, each taking the name of their respective river. Both units remain accessible from Benton.

Things to do near Benton

Whitewater rafting drives most trips to the area. The Ocoee River is controlled by three dams operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority: Ocoee Dam #1 on the Lower Ocoee, Ocoee Dam #2 on the Middle Ocoee, and Ocoee Dam #3 on the Upper Ocoee, which determine when water is released. The Middle section offers continuous Class III and IV rapids for over 5 miles, while the Upper section hosted the whitewater events for the 1996 Summer Olympics and features over 5 miles of back-to-back Class IV rapids. On the Hiwassee, floats are calmer. The river is a popular fishing stream for largemouth bass, yellow perch, catfish, and brown and rainbow trout, with the trout stocked by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. On land, hikers reach Benton Falls from the Chilhowee Recreation Area on Chilhowee Mountain, and the John Muir Trail runs through the Hiwassee River gorge. Mountain biking, birding, and forest scenic drives round out the itinerary.

The rafting calendar is dictated by TVA dam releases, not rainfall. The Middle Ocoee has releases five days a week from June through Labor Day, with no releases on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In spring (March and April) and fall (September and October), the Middle Ocoee runs on weekends only. The Upper Ocoee has scheduled releases on weekends only, running from late spring through Labor Day. Booking a Middle Ocoee rafting trip on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or an Upper Ocoee trip on a weekday, will not work. Summer is peak season for both rivers and the campgrounds, which serve as a hub for whitewater trips on the Hiwassee and Ocoee. Spring and fall bring cooler weather, wildflowers, and thinner crowds, with fall foliage typically peaking from mid to late October. Winter camping is possible but limited. Many private parks reduce services, and travelers should confirm operations before booking. Starting in the fall of 2026, Gee Creek Campground will undergo an infrastructure renovation focused on the bathhouse and similar areas, closing the campground until an anticipated reopening in spring 2027.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

We enjoyed Drew’s camper very much for our Labor Day weekend trip to Chattanooga! Despite high temps in the 90’s and hitting 100 during the weekend, we even got cold at night from the air conditioning working so well. The camper was clean and looked bigger in person than the pictures. Lastly, even though we never actually got to meet Drew, he was attentive and responsive over messages when we had questions. We would absolutely stay in Drew’s camper again!

We rented this camper and couldn't have asked for a better experience. The camper itself was clean, comfortable, and clearly well maintained. Everything was in great working order, and it was obvious the host takes pride in keeping it ready for guests. The host was fantastic to work with from beginning to end. Communication was quick and friendly, and they were genuinely helpful throughout the entire process, from booking to pickup to return. Any questions we had were answered right away, which made everything smooth and stress free. Highly recommend both this camper and host, and we wouldn't hesitate to book again in the future!

How to book near Benton

Public and private campgrounds in the Benton area use different reservation systems. Tennessee State Parks handles bookings for Gee Creek Campground at Hiwassee Scenic River State Park through its own reservation portal, which allows advance reservations up to one year in advance. Gee Creek is a primitive campground of 47 individual sites and eight group sites, each with a table, fire ring, and grill. There are no hookups and no dump station, and generators are not permitted, so RV travelers should plan for boondocking or choose a private park instead. Cherokee National Forest campgrounds are reserved through Recreation.gov, with peak-season visits best booked as early as possible. Private parks like Rivers RV Park Campground, Whitewater RV Park, and Adventures Unlimited take direct bookings by phone or website. For summer weekends and any rafting-release weekend, reserve well ahead.

What to expect near Benton

The terrain around Benton is transitional between the Great Valley of East Tennessee and the Blue Ridge foothills. Some access roads are narrow, and Spring Creek Road, which leads into the state park, is a narrow and winding route that can be difficult to maneuver with a large trailer or motorhome. Amenities vary sharply by campground. Gee Creek is primitive, with no electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs and no dump station, and generators are not allowed. Potable water pumps are located around the campground, and a heated bathhouse offers hot showers. Private parks nearer the Ocoee generally offer electric and water hookups, level pads, and river access, and Adventures Unlimited has a dump station on site. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the river gorge and forest. Fire restrictions may apply during dry conditions. Check current conditions with the park office before arrival.
