Campgrounds near Coalfield, Tennessee
Coalfield sits in Morgan County on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau, within a short drive of state parks, TVA lakeshore campgrounds, and private OHV resorts. The area works well as an RV base for families splitting time between hiking, paddling, and off-road recreation, with Knoxville and Oak Ridge close enough for a supply run or rainy-day activity.
The closest public option is Frozen Head State Park, a Tennessee State Parks unit northeast of Wartburg, though its campground is currently primitive and better suited to tents and small trailers than large motorhomes. Nearby TVA-managed camping is available at Melton Hill Dam Campground on the Clinch River near Lenoir City, which is popular with RV renters for its lakeside setting. Windrock Park Campground serves riders visiting the Windrock OHV trail system just south of Coalfield.
Smaller private grounds fill in the gaps. Mountain View Camping and The Crosseyed Cricket offer additional RV-friendly sites in the surrounding countryside, giving renters a range of choices from full-hookup lakefront pads to rustic pull-throughs closer to the trailheads.
Things to do near Coalfield
Frozen Head State Park is the headline outdoor destination, with over 50 miles of trails climbing into the Cumberland Mountains and a lookout tower on the park's namesake peak. Families use it for day hikes, waterfall visits, and shaded picnicking.
Water recreation centers on Melton Hill Lake and the Clinch River. The Melton Hill Dam area has a designated swimming beach, a boat ramp, and picnic and day-use areas, and the flat-water stretch is well suited to kayaks and paddleboards. Anglers target bass, catfish, and crappie.
Windrock Park draws ATV, side-by-side, and dirt-bike riders to one of the largest privately operated OHV trail systems in the eastern United States. For a lower-key day, the museums and greenways in Oak Ridge are about a half-hour drive southeast.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Coalfield. March through May brings wildflower blooms in Frozen Head, moderate temperatures, and steady rain, while September and October deliver drier air and hardwood color across the plateau. Weekends during peak fall foliage book out well ahead at state park and TVA sites.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Lake-adjacent sites at Melton Hill are in highest demand during this stretch, particularly around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends.
Winter narrows the options significantly. Melton Hill Dam Campground operates on a seasonal schedule, opening in mid-March and closing in mid-November, and several private grounds reduce hours or shut fully. Frozen Head's campground has also been affected by ongoing renovations, so travelers should confirm current status with the park before planning a cold-weather visit.

How to book a campsite near Coalfield
Reservation systems vary by operator. Tennessee State Parks handles Frozen Head bookings through its official reservation portal at reserve.tnstateparks.com, with a rolling window that opens up to one year in advance and fills quickly for spring wildflower weekends and fall color.
Reservations for Melton Hill Dam Campground are made through the TVA-partner operator that manages the site, and booking ahead is recommended, especially during peak seasons and holidays, as the campground near Knoxville and I-75 fills quickly. The campground has 61 sites, with 9 offering electric, water, and sewer hookups, so full-hookup pads are the first to go.
Private grounds including Windrock Park Campground, Mountain View Camping, and The Crosseyed Cricket book directly through their own websites or by phone. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type when reserving, especially for larger Class A motorhomes.
What to expect on-site
Site styles range widely across the area. Melton Hill Dam Campground sits on a 10 to 15 percent slope with three tiered roads, and a public boat ramp, day-use area, picnic area, and swim beach sit immediately adjacent. Four of its hookup sites meet ADA guidelines. Cell service at TVA and state park sites is generally usable but not reliable deep in the hollows.
Frozen Head's Big Cove Campground is primitive, with rustic sites, a bathhouse, and backcountry options, and the bridge into the campground has a 5-ton weight limit that rules out most large motorhomes. Measure carefully before booking.
Windrock Park Campground is oriented around OHV use, with direct trail access, and can be lively on weekends. Quieter stays are easier to find midweek at all locations.
