Campgrounds near Cowan
Cowan sits in Franklin County in south-central Tennessee, at the foot of the Cumberland Plateau and within easy reach of Tims Ford Lake. The town itself is small, so most RV camping is clustered a short drive north and west around Winchester and the lake. Tims Ford State Park sits along the shores of Tims Ford Lake on the Elk River, and the surrounding state and city parks anchor the local camping scene.
Fairview - Tims Ford State Park is the closest state-park RV campground, sitting directly on Tims Ford Lake with water, electric, and sewer at a subset of sites. Twin Creeks RV Resort and Winchester Parks and Recreation both operate near the lakeshore only a mile or two from Fairview, making the Winchester side of the lake the densest cluster of options.
The Bolo Club and Campground and Sasquatch Farm RV Park round out the choices for renters who want smaller, privately run properties within the same driving radius. Together these five give visitors a mix of full-service resort sites, state-park sites on the water, and low-key private options.
Things to do around Cowan
Tims Ford Lake is the main draw. It is one of the Bill Dance Signature Lakes and is regarded as one of the top bass fishing and recreational lakes in the Southeast, with boating, kayaking, and swimming all popular from the state-park shoreline. The park also offers paved multi-use trails and unpaved trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus the Bear Trace, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course on a peninsula in the lake.
In Cowan itself, the Cowan Railroad Museum is housed in a restored 1904 depot listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits beside an active CSX freight mainline that still climbs to the Cumberland Mountain Tunnel. Sewanee: The University of the South is a short drive up the mountain from town and is easy to fold into a day trip.

Tims Ford State Park is open year-round, and the Fairview campground on the lake stays open through all four seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable driving and camping windows, with mild temperatures and lower humidity than midsummer. Bass fishing peaks in spring, which pulls tournament traffic to the lake and marinas.
Summer is the busiest booking window. Holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill lakeside sites well in advance, and the state park enforces a 14-day maximum stay from March through November. Heat and humidity are real considerations for RV renters traveling with kids, so shaded and lake-access sites go first.
Winter brings cool but generally mild weather compared with northern states, and the state park lifts the maximum stay to 28 days from December through February. Some seasonal attractions, including the Cowan Railroad Museum, are only open May through October, so confirm hours before planning a shoulder-season trip.

How to book near Cowan
Fairview and the other Tims Ford State Park campgrounds are reserved through the Tennessee State Parks online system or by phone with Central Reservations at 888-TNPARKS. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, and each reservation carries a non-refundable advance reservation fee. The reservation holder must be at least 18 years old.
Winchester Parks and Recreation runs the city campground on the lake through the department's reservation office. Private options such as Twin Creeks RV Resort, The Bolo Club and Campground, and Sasquatch Farm RV Park book directly through the individual campground; call ahead in peak months to confirm rig-length limits and hookup type.
What to expect on site
Fairview offers sites with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric plus water, sewer at 31 sites, a centrally located dump station, heated bathhouses with hot showers, and Wi-Fi. Sites accommodate rigs up to roughly 65 feet, though pads can be short and unlevel in spots, so bring leveling blocks. Only certified heat-treated firewood is allowed to enter the state park.
Terrain around the lake is hilly, and roads inside the state park have blind curves, so drive slowly with a large rig. Cell coverage is generally usable in Winchester and around the main park but can drop in coves and on the plateau near Cowan and Sewanee. Life jackets are strongly recommended at all lake access points.

Travel trailers typically run $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250, and larger Class A coaches go from $225 to $400. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cowan,%20TennesseeDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Tennessee?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Tennessee, including every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy in Cowan. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV-specific endorsement is required, even for big Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised at how simple it is to get behind the wheel and start exploring the Sewanee and Monteagle area.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change after I book? Can I cancel?
Booking your Cowan RV trip is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to every guest. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, plus structured refund options depending on how far out from your trip you cancel. The same RVezy cancellation policy applies platform-wide, so you don't have to read fine print on each listing. If your plans change or a winter storm rolls into Franklin County, just contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. Booking with confidence is part of the RVezy experience.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cowan RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Cowan is easy to find on RVezy. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see listings where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Many Franklin County hosts are dog owners themselves and may leave bowls, treats, or a tie-out for your pup. Once you arrive, Tims Ford State Park has leashed-pet trails along the lake, and Foster Falls in South Cumberland State Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails. The Mountain Goat Trail rail-trail running through Cowan, Sewanee, and Monteagle is another great leash-friendly walk. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits.
tnstateparks.com/parks/tims-fordCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Cowan?
Yes, RV delivery in Cowan is offered by many hosts and it's hands-down the easiest way to start a trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Your host will drive the RV to your campsite at Tims Ford State Park, Foster Falls, or even a private property in Sewanee, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check the listing for per-mile delivery fees. Pro tip: delivery to Tims Ford (about 15 minutes from Cowan) is usually very affordable and worth every penny on your first motorhome rental Cowan trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cowan,%20TennesseeHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Cowan?
Most RVezy hosts in Cowan include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for road trippers. Extra miles usually run $0.30 to $0.50 each. From Cowan you can easily reach Chattanooga (about 60 miles), Nashville (about 90 miles), the Great Smoky Mountains (about 180 miles), Huntsville, Alabama (about 60 miles), or Mammoth Cave, Kentucky (about 160 miles). Each listing shows the mileage policy up front so you can plan your route and total cost before you book. For longer trips, message the host: many will bundle extra miles into a weekly rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cowan,%20TennesseeWhere are the best campgrounds near Cowan?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Cowan. Tims Ford State Park (about 15 minutes northwest) offers lakeside sites with water and electric hookups, a marina, and a paved bike trail. Foster Falls Campground in South Cumberland State Park (35 minutes east) puts you right next to one of Tennessee's most photographed waterfalls. Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park in Manchester (30 minutes north) has shaded riverside sites and Native American history. For full resort amenities, Manchester KOA Holiday off I-24 is a favorite for families. Book Tennessee State Parks campsites early in spring and fall: they're some of the most popular weekends of the year on the Cumberland Plateau.
tnstateparks.com/parks/tims-fordWhen is the best time to visit Cowan in an RV?
Cowan is a true four-season destination, but April through early June and September through early November are the sweet spots for an RV trip. Spring temperatures range from the low 60s to upper 70s with dogwoods and redbuds blooming across Franklin County. Fall brings 50 to 75 degree days and spectacular leaf color on the Cumberland Plateau, especially around Sewanee and Monteagle. Summer (mid 80s to low 90s with humidity) is perfect for swimming and boating at Tims Ford Lake. Winter is mild (30s to 50s) and quieter, with great deals on cheap RV rental Cowan options. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for October weekends, the most popular time of year.
weather.gov/ohx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Cowan is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping tanks. The roads around Cowan are well suited to first-timers: Highway 64 and Highway 41A are wide and scenic, and Interstate 24 is just minutes away for longer hops. Start with a travel trailer or a Class C if you're nervous about size, and choose a host who offers delivery so your first time behind the wheel is the drive home, not the drive to the campground. Your host is also just a text away during your whole trip.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services.htmlWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Don't sweat it: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RV rental in Cowan booked through RVezy as part of the protection plan. Whether you have a flat tire on the climb up Monteagle Mountain, run out of fuel near Sewanee, or lock the keys inside at Tims Ford, one phone call gets help dispatched. For anything related to the RV itself (a finicky water pump, a tripped breaker), your host is your first call: they know their rig better than anyone and most issues are solved with a quick text. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. You're never on your own out there.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are popular road trip routes from Cowan?
An RV road trip from Cowan puts some of the South's best destinations within easy reach. Head 60 miles east on I-24 to Chattanooga for Lookout Mountain and the Tennessee Aquarium. Drive 90 miles northwest to Nashville for honky-tonks and Centennial Park. Go 25 miles to Lynchburg to tour the Jack Daniel's Distillery, or 180 miles east to Pigeon Forge and the Great Smoky Mountains. Cross-border travel to Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky is allowed on RVezy rentals (Mexico travel is not permitted). For something quieter, the 40-mile loop through Sewanee, Monteagle, and Tracy City showcases the Cumberland Plateau at its best.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan realistically and you'll stay on budget. Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 mpg, campervans (Class B) 16 to 20 mpg, and tow vehicles pulling travel trailers 9 to 12 mpg. Tennessee gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Cowan has convenient fill-ups at the Shell and Marathon stations on Cumberland Street, plus larger truck stops in Monteagle just up I-24. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Cowan or Winchester rather than at the top of the mountain in Monteagle, where prices tick higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Cowan?
For the best campgrounds near Cowan, book as early as you can, especially for weekends. Tennessee State Parks like Tims Ford and South Cumberland use the official Reserve America-style system at tnstateparks.com and release reservations up to 12 months in advance. For peak fall color weekends in October and any summer holiday, lock in 3 to 6 months out. Private parks like Manchester KOA can usually be booked 4 to 8 weeks ahead, and shoulder season midweek stays are often available last-minute. Pro tip: if your dates are full at Tims Ford, check the cabin loop cancellations on Sunday evenings, when many last-minute openings appear.
tnstateparks.com/What are the driving conditions like around Cowan?
Driving around Cowan is mostly relaxed rural and small-highway travel, which is ideal for an RV. The famous Cowan Mountain (Sewanee Mountain) grade on Highway 41A and the I-24 climb up Monteagle Mountain are the two spots to take slow: both have steep grades and runaway truck ramps, so shift to a lower gear on the descent and let your engine brake do the work. Summer afternoons can bring quick thunderstorms, and winter occasionally sees ice on the mountain (check TDOT SmartWay before you go). Otherwise, traffic is light, parking is generous, and small-town speed limits make for stress-free driving on your Cowan RV trip.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cowan?
Most campgrounds near Cowan offer water and electric (30/50-amp) hookups, and some private parks add sewer for full hookups. Tims Ford State Park has water and electric sites plus a centrally located dump station and potable water fill, and Foster Falls offers more rustic sites with limited services. Manchester KOA and private resorts on Tims Ford Lake provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Dump stations are available at most Tennessee State Parks for registered guests. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you leave the campground, since fill stations are limited along Highway 41A heading to Sewanee.
tnstateparks.com/parks/tims-fordWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Cowan?
RVs available for rent in Cowan come well equipped for comfort. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks in family rigs, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and often an oven, plus a bathroom with shower and toilet. Most have roof air conditioning, a furnace for chilly Cumberland Plateau nights, a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots or onboard cellular boosters (helpful since signal can be spotty around Foster Falls). Class C and larger motorhomes include seatbelted seats for travel, and most rigs have a generator for off-grid camping. Each listing details the exact bed count, sleeps capacity, and features, so you can match the RV to your family RV trip Cowan plans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cowan,%20TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts typically offer?
RVezy hosts in Cowan offer a flexible menu of add-ons to make your trip turnkey. Common options include linen and towel packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane top-offs, extra generator hours, kitchen kits, bike racks, and pre-stocked firewood. Many hosts offer delivery within a 25 to 50 mile radius (covering Sewanee, Winchester, Manchester, and Monteagle) for a per-mile fee, with setup included. Standard pickup is usually mid-afternoon and dropoff late morning, and some hosts offer early pickup or late return for a small fee. Mileage policies and fees are spelled out in every listing, so there are no surprises when you book your campervan rental Cowan or motorhome rental Cowan.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cowan,%20TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Cowan is handled securely through the RVezy platform: you'll pay the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons at booking with a credit or debit card. Cash never changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and released after dropoff once the rig is returned in the same condition it left. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick photo walkaround at pickup and dropoff with your host, dump tanks and refuel as agreed, and report any small bumps right away. Smooth, transparent, and designed to keep both you and your host happy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for visiting Cowan?
Here's something most visitors miss: Cowan sits at the base of one of the steepest railroad grades east of the Rockies, and the Cowan Railroad Museum (free admission, open seasonally near the historic depot) is a charming 30-minute stop the whole family enjoys. While you're in town, grab a meal at Corner House Coffee or the Cowan Cafe, then drive 15 minutes up the mountain to Sewanee to walk the University of the South's campus and stop at the Memorial Cross overlook for one of the best free views in Tennessee. Pair that with a sunset cruise on Tims Ford Lake and you've got a perfect day on your Tennessee RV rental adventure.
