Campgrounds near Delano, Tennessee
Delano sits in Polk County in southeastern Tennessee, on the Hiwassee River between Chattanooga and Knoxville. The town serves as a launching point for paddling and fishing on the Hiwassee, and it sits within short driving distance of the Ocoee River and the Cherokee National Forest. RV travelers typically use Delano as a base for river trips, hiking, and access to the whitewater the area is known for.
Camping options range from primitive state park sites to full-hookup private RV parks. Gee Creek Campground, inside the state park, has 47 sites plus 8 separate group campsites, and it is a primitive campground that can accommodate tents and small trailers, with no utility hookups available. Nearby private parks such as The Road Less Traveled RV Park, Rivers RV Park Campground, and Whitewater RV Park cater to travelers who want electric, water, and sewer connections.
Access is straightforward from Interstate 75, with US 411 and Spring Creek Road linking most campgrounds to the park entrance and river put-ins.
Things to do near Delano
Whitewater rafting is the headline activity. The Hiwassee is a scenic river with mild Class I and II rapids suited to families and first-time paddlers, while the Middle Ocoee offers continuous Class III and IV rapids for over 5 miles and the Upper Ocoee, home of the 1996 Summer Whitewater Olympics, features back-to-back Class IV rapids. Multiple outfitters operate on both rivers, and TVA dam releases keep flows predictable through the season.
Anglers target rainbow and brown trout on the Hiwassee tailwater. Hikers can pick up the John Muir National Recreation Trail along the river gorge, climb Starr Mountain, or drive the Cherohala Skyway.
Parksville Lake, inside Cherokee National Forest, offers swimming and boating for families looking for calmer water between rafting days.

The rafting season shapes the camping calendar. The Middle Ocoee runs every Saturday and Sunday from the beginning of April to the end of October, and from Memorial Day to Labor Day it also runs Monday, Thursday, and Friday. The Upper Ocoee runs on Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Hiwassee runs on a more consistent daily release schedule from spring through fall.
Summer weekends are the busiest window. Riverside sites at Gee Creek and nearby private parks fill quickly, and reservations well in advance are strongly recommended for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends. Several Cherokee National Forest campgrounds in the Ocoee corridor operate a seasonal schedule and close for winter.
Spring brings wildflowers and higher river flows. Fall delivers cooler nights, foliage color through the Cherokee National Forest, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. The bathhouse at Gee Creek is heated, clean and well maintained, which makes off-season stays workable, though most rafting operations shut down.
How to book near Delano
Gee Creek Campground is reserved through the Tennessee State Parks reservation system, either online at reserve.tnstateparks.com or by phone with the park office. Tennessee State Parks lets visitors reserve campsites up to one year in advance of their planned stay, and a non-refundable Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite applies. Sites do not include electric or water hookups, so RVs should arrive with full fresh water tanks.
Private parks such as The Road Less Traveled RV Park, Rivers RV Park Campground, and Whitewater RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends, book several weeks ahead. Cherokee National Forest campgrounds on the Ocoee are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and reserved through Recreation.gov.
What to expect on-site
Gee Creek is a primitive campground. Sites are each equipped with a table, fire ring and a grill, with public water spigots variously located around the park, no dump station, and a heated bathhouse with showers that is clean and well maintained. Generators are not allowed, and the road into the park is narrow and winding, which requires care for larger rigs and trailers.
Private RV parks in the area generally offer full hookups, longer pull-throughs, and shorter walks to river put-ins used by rafting outfitters. Cell service varies by carrier and can be spotty inside the gorge.
Families should plan for cool river water year-round due to dam-release temperatures, bring water shoes, and pack layers for evenings.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Delano, TN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Delano, TN?
RV rental in Delano is affordable compared to bigger Tennessee tourist hubs. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches from $250 and up. Hosts in Polk County set their own rates, so you can filter by price to find a cheap RV rental in Delano that fits your budget. Booking midweek or during shoulder season (March or late October) is the easiest way to save. Pro tip: rafting weekends on the Ocoee fill up fast, so locking in your dates early often gets you the best price.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Delano,TennesseeDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Delano?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Delano. Tennessee does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers booked through RVezy, even for larger Class A coaches. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the whole process is, leaving more time for the Hiwassee River.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Delano protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Delano booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle, giving you peace of mind whether you're parked at Gee Creek Campground or driving the curvy stretches of US-411 along the Hiwassee. During checkout you choose between different protection levels (not the host), so you can match coverage to how adventurous your Delano RV trip will be. The support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip, which removes the biggest worry most first-time renters have.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Delano RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level (not the individual host), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You won't see a cancellation policy on each listing because it's handled at the platform level. If a host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. If plans change, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options so you're never stuck guessing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Delano RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Delano is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Polk County is a dream for dogs: leashed pups are welcome on trails at Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park, along the John Muir National Recreation Trail, and at most Cherokee National Forest day-use areas. Gee Creek Campground also allows leashed pets at campsites. Pro tip: pack a long lead and a towel because river-soaked dogs are pretty much guaranteed after an afternoon along the Hiwassee.
tnstateparks.com/parks/hiwassee-ocoeeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Delano?
Yes, RV delivery in Delano is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Gee Creek Campground or a private property in Reliance or Benton, then set up the awning, level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything before they leave. Filter by Delivery when you search to see which RVs offer it and their delivery radius. You skip the towing, skip the stress, and just show up ready to float the Hiwassee.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106494-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive my RV rental from Delano?
You've got a lot of road to explore on a Delano RV trip. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, with some offering generous daily limits and others offering RV rental with unlimited mileage, which you can see right on the listing. From Delano, Chattanooga is about 65 miles southwest (roughly 75 minutes), Knoxville sits around 75 miles north, Asheville, NC is roughly 110 miles east, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance at Townsend is about 85 miles away. A quick day trip to the Ocoee Whitewater Center is just 20 minutes down US-64. If you're planning a bigger loop, message the host before booking and they'll happily map out the mileage with you.

Chilhowee Recreation Area atop Chilhowee Mountain in Cherokee National Forest has electric sites and stunning views. Parksville Lake Campground and Thunder Rock Campground along the Ocoee round out the favorites. Book Gee Creek and Chilhowee well ahead for summer weekends.
tnstateparks.com/parks/hiwassee-ocoeeWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Delano?
Delano is a true four-season destination, but late April through October is peak RV camping weather in Delano, with daytime highs from the mid-70s F in spring and fall to the upper 80s F in summer. Summer (June to August) is rafting season on the Ocoee and the busiest time, while October brings fall color across the Cherokee National Forest and crisp 60s F afternoons that are perfect for hiking Benton Falls. Winters are mild compared to the mountains farther north, with highs around 50 F and occasional cold snaps. Pro tip: mid-September hits the sweet spot, with warm rivers, smaller crowds, and the first hint of color on the ridges.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to figure it out in Delano?
You've got this, first time renting an RV in Delano is one of the easiest places to learn. They'll share their contact info so you can text a quick question mid-trip. You're never on your own. Your host is typically your first text for quick questions because they know their RV inside and out. Save both numbers in your phone at pickup and you'll roll into your Delano adventure stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Delano, TN?
An RV road trip from Delano puts you in the middle of some of the South's most scenic drives. The Cherohala Skyway runs about 43 miles from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC, with overlooks that rival the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Ocoee Scenic Byway (US-64) winds through the Ocoee River Gorge toward Ducktown. Head about 65 miles southwest to Chattanooga for Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls, or roughly 85 miles northeast to the Great Smoky Mountains. Want a longer haul? fs.usda.gov/cherokeeWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Delano RV rental?
Plan your fuel budget around realistic numbers and you'll be in great shape. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, Class A coaches around 7 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer usually lands near 10 to 12 mpg. Most gas stations in Polk County are clustered along US-411 in Benton, Etowah, and Athens, and prices generally run a few cents below the Tennessee state average. Fill up in Athens or Cleveland before heading into the Cherokee National Forest, as stations get sparse on the Cherohala Skyway. The TN Comptroller publishes statewide fuel data if you want to plan to the penny.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Delano?
Lock in your campsite as early as you can, especially for summer. Tennessee State Park sites at Gee Creek Campground inside Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park can be booked up to 12 months in advance through tnstateparks.com, and the prime riverside sites disappear fast for Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends. Cherokee National Forest campgrounds like Chilhowee and Thunder Rock book through Recreation.gov, generally with a 6-month window. For private parks in and around Delano, two to three months ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have last-minute openings even in July.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234060What are the driving conditions like around Delano?
Driving an RV around Delano is genuinely manageable, even for newer renters. US-411 and US-64 are the main routes, both wide two-lane highways with good shoulders. The Ocoee Scenic Byway (US-64 east of Ocoee) is curvy through the gorge, so take it slow in larger rigs. The Cherohala Skyway is steep with sharp switchbacks (avoid in a big Class A). Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer and the rare ice storm in January or February. Traffic is light most of the year, with the biggest crowds on summer rafting Saturdays. Pro tip: TDOT's SmartWay TN site has live road and weather cams for US-64 through the gorge.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat hookups and amenities should I expect at Delano campgrounds?
Expect a mix, which is part of the fun. Gee Creek Campground at Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park offers water spigots, picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and a bathhouse, but no electric or sewer hookups. Chilhowee Recreation Area in Cherokee National Forest offers electric and water hookups at many sites. Private RV parks in the Delano area typically provide full hookups (water, electric, sewer) and Wi-Fi. For dump stations and fresh water, the state park has both onsite. Pro tip: confirm hookup needs with your host before booking so you pick the right RV for the right site.
tnstateparks.com/parks/hiwassee-ocoeeWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Delano?
Today's RV rentals in Delano come loaded for a comfortable trip. Most motorhome rentals in Delano include a queen or king bed plus convertible dinettes and bunks (sleeps 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate-controlled AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts also include a TV, propane generator, outdoor speakers, and even Wi-Fi or cellular boosters (helpful because cell coverage at Gee Creek can be spotty). Linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs vary by host, so check the listing's included items list. Pro tip: a campervan rental in Delano works perfectly for couples wanting easy parking near smaller trailheads.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Delano,TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect?
Hosts in Delano make customizing your trip easy. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees if you bring a dog. Delivery is one of the most common upgrades, with many hosts delivering to Gee Creek Campground, Chilhowee Recreation Area, or your private rental for a per-mile fee within their service radius. Mileage policies vary: some listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer unlimited mileage, all clearly shown on the listing page. Pickup and dropoff times are flexible and set by the host, so message them if you need an early-morning rafting start.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Delano,TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Tennessee on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class) and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the tanks emptied and fuel topped off as the listing specifies, and message the host through the app if anything comes up mid-trip. Everything stays documented, which protects both you and the host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a true local insider tip for visiting Delano?
Here's the move most visitors miss: time your visit to a scheduled TVA water release on the Hiwassee River. The dam releases (posted on the TVA website) turn the calm river into a perfect Class I to II float for tubing and family-friendly paddling, usually starting late morning. Park your RV at Gee Creek Campground, walk down to the put-in, and float right back to camp. Afterward, stop by local Delano spots for fresh baked goods and local honey. Cap the day with a ride on the Hiwassee River Rail Adventures train, which crosses the river gorge nearby. It's the kind of day that turns first-time renters into RVezy regulars.
