Campgrounds near Dunlap, Tennessee
Dunlap sits in the Sequatchie Valley, a long, straight trough between the Cumberland Plateau and Walden Ridge in southeast Tennessee. The Sequatchie County seat is about 40 minutes north of Chattanooga, with state parks, waterfalls, and lake shoreline all within an easy day's drive. That location puts RV travelers within reach of a wide range of campground styles without long transit days.
Close-in options include R and R RV Campground, a small park along US-127 with electric, water, and sewer service and pull-through sites for larger rigs, and Mountain Glen RV Park and Campground, which offers full-hookup sites in a family-oriented setting on the plateau side of the valley. Camp Chet sits atop Whitwell Mountain south of town on more than 900 acres of private forested Cumberland Plateau land, with multiple camp areas and miles of marked hiking and mountain biking trails.
For waterfall access, Greeter Falls Campground is less than half a mile from the Greeter Falls Trailhead in Altamont, adjacent to the Savage Gulf State Park backcountry. For lakefront camping, Harrison Bay State Park on Chickamauga Lake is about an hour south.
Things to do around Dunlap
The Sequatchie Valley is best known for aerial sports. The valley has long been called the Hang Gliding Capital of the East, thanks to open farmland, cooperative landowners, and ridge lift off Walden Ridge. Visitors can watch pilots launch from Henson Gap on the west rim above Dunlap or arrange tandem flights through local operators.
Waterfalls and hiking dominate the plateau. From Greeter Falls Campground, the Greeter Falls Trail loop connects three waterfalls and the Blue Hole swimming area inside Savage Gulf State Park. Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet, is one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi and anchors a large state park with gorges, cascades, fishing, and boating.
In town, families can visit the Historic Dunlap Coke Ovens Park, a shaded park preserving the remains of hundreds of beehive coke ovens from the early 1900s coal era. Paddlers can float sections of the Sequatchie River.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV trips in the Sequatchie Valley. Days are mild, waterfalls run full after winter and early-spring rains, and biting insects are lighter than midsummer. Tornadoes across Tennessee tend to peak in the spring, so travelers should monitor forecasts and know where their campground's shelter is located.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and the busiest bookings. July is the warmest month in Dunlap, with average highs near 86°F and lows near 65°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Lake-oriented sites at Harrison Bay fill quickly on holiday weekends, and Greeter Falls sees weekend surges tied to the swimming holes in Savage Gulf.
Late fall and winter are quieter. January is the coldest month, with average highs near 44°F and lows near 30°F, and some private campgrounds run shortened seasons around the coldest months. State-park campgrounds such as Harrison Bay stay open year round, and Tennessee State Parks offers extended stay limits for the December through February off-season.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

How to book
Tennessee State Parks use a single online reservation system for their campgrounds. There is a non-refundable advanced reservation fee per campsite, guests renting overnight accommodations must be 18 or older, and reservations may be made up to one year in advance. Harrison Bay is open year round, with a maximum stay of 14 consecutive nights, extended to 28 nights from December 1 through February 28 or 29, and a required 3-night break before returning. Popular loops fill weeks ahead for summer and holiday weekends, so book early.
Private parks each use their own systems. Greeter Falls Campground takes reservations through Campspot and offers cabins, yurts, glamping sites, RV sites, and tent spots. Camp Chet, Mountain Glen RV Park and Campground, and R and R RV Campground handle bookings through their own websites or common marketplace listings.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain matters here. Dunlap sits on the valley floor, but many campgrounds are on the plateau above, reached by winding two-lane roads. Camp Chet, for example, is atop Whitwell Mountain and requires driving through a locked gate and over a mile and a half of bumpy gravel and dirt road, with a rugged-capable vehicle most comfortable. Large towables should confirm access before arrival.
Hookups vary. Private RV parks in the valley typically offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer. At Harrison Bay, RV sites have water and electrical hookups, a limited number can accommodate rigs up to 65 feet, and a centralized dump station serves the campground, with a separate primitive tent area. Tennessee State Parks asks that campfires use heat-treated firewood or downed wood collected inside the park, and that untreated wood not be brought in. Copperheads and ticks are present in wooded areas, so closed shoes on trails are a good idea.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dunlap, TN
How much does an RV rental in Dunlap typically cost?
Great news for budget travelers: an RV rental in Dunlap often comes in below big-city averages because you are booking directly from local hosts in the Sequatchie Valley. Travel trailers commonly run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes typically range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes can run $250 to $400. Add fuel, campground fees (often $25 to $45 a night locally), and any optional add-ons like generators or camp chairs. To score a cheap RV rental in Dunlap, book midweek, travel in shoulder seasons (March or November), and look for travel trailers with delivery so you skip towing entirely. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in your dates fast during peak weekends.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dunlap%2C+TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Dunlap, TN?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dunlap. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, so your everyday license covers Class A, Class B, Class C, fifth wheels, and travel trailers on the RVezy platform. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home-country license. Once you are verified, you are ready to head into the Sequatchie Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my booking?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Dunlap through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 111 and the Sequatchie Valley with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat near Fall Creek Falls or need a battery jump at Coke Ovens Park, one call brings help to you. Review the included coverage details on RVezy before booking and pick the tier that fits your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your Dunlap RV trip with confidence. The exact refund depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Hosts do not set their own cancellation terms on RVezy, so you get consistent rules no matter which Sequatchie Valley listing you choose. Review the full cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before checkout, then book the dates you actually want.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Dunlap?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome on plenty of trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Dunlap, TN, then message the host to confirm any pet fee or extra cleaning policy. Dunlap is a fantastic dog destination: leashed pets are allowed at the 88-acre Dunlap Coke Ovens Park, on the Coops Creek Greenway from Harris Park, and at Fall Creek Falls State Park a short drive away. R&R RV Campground right in Dunlap also welcomes leashed pets at their sites. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and a towel for muddy paws after the Sequatchie River Blueway, and your dog will love this trip as much as you do.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Dunlap?
Yes, and it's one of the smartest ways to do this trip. Many Dunlap-area hosts offer RV delivery, meaning they'll tow or drive the rig to your campsite at Fall Creek Falls State Park, Foster Falls, Harrison Bay State Park, or even a friend's property in the Sequatchie Valley, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is ideal if you're a first-time renter or you don't want to tow a travel trailer through the curves of Highway 111. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, check the host's delivery radius and fee, then arrive at a fully set-up campsite ready to roast marshmallows.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Dunlap?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some listings even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a longer Dunlap RV trip. From Dunlap, Chattanooga is about 35 miles south, Nashville about 130 miles northwest, Knoxville roughly 115 miles northeast, the Great Smoky Mountains around 170 miles east, and Atlanta about 155 miles south. Each listing shows its mileage policy and overage fee up front, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-stop loop through Chattanooga and the Smokies, sort listings by mileage allowance and message the host about a custom package for longer drives.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Dunlap to park my RV?
You are in one of Tennessee's best regions for RV camping. The best campgrounds near Dunlap include R&R RV Campground right in town on US-127 with full hookups and 50-amp service; Fall Creek Falls State Park (about 25 miles north) with over 200 sites, hookups, and the state's tallest waterfall; Foster Falls Campground in South Cumberland State Park (about 35 miles south) for hiking and climbing access; Harrison Bay State Park on Chickamauga Lake (about 45 miles south) with full-hookup shoreline sites; and Savage Gulf State Park area campgrounds for a quieter wooded stay. Book Tennessee State Park sites through tnstateparks.com up to a year out, especially for fall color season.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsWhen is the best time of year to visit Dunlap in an RV?
Honestly, Dunlap is a three-season sweet spot. Spring (April to early June) brings wildflowers, 60s and 70s highs, and the start of hang-gliding season at Henson Gap. Fall (mid-September through early November) is arguably the best time, with crisp 60 to 75°F days, dry air, and incredible color across the Cumberland Plateau, peaking around mid-to-late October. Summer days hover in the upper 80s with humidity, so RV air conditioning earns its keep, but evenings cool nicely in the valley. Winters are mild with highs in the 40s to low 50s and only about 5 inches of average snowfall, so RV camping in Dunlap is genuinely a year-round option. Time your visit for October leaf-peeping and book early.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually be able to drive this thing?
You'll be totally fine, and Dunlap is actually a friendlier place to start than most. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, water, propane, slide-outs, and the dump system, and you can text them anytime during your trip. First time renting an RV? Pick a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer with delivery, so you can skip towing entirely. Dunlap's main routes (US-127 and Highway 111) are wide, mostly flat through the valley floor, and far less stressful than driving in Nashville or Atlanta. Pro tip: do a slow loop around the campground when you arrive to get a feel for turns and mirrors before heading out.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat near the Sequatchie Valley Overlook on TN-111, a dead battery at Coke Ovens Park, or a lockout at Fall Creek Falls, one call dispatches help to your location. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks like the awning, the water heater, or the slide-out. For anything bigger, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, and you will be set for a smooth motorhome rental Dunlap adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Dunlap?
Dunlap is one of the best launching pads in Tennessee for an RV road trip. Top routes include the Sequatchie Valley drive through Bledsoe, Sequatchie, and Marion counties; Dunlap to Chattanooga (about 35 miles, 45 minutes) for Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls, and the Tennessee Aquarium; Dunlap to Fall Creek Falls State Park (about 25 miles) for waterfalls and hiking; Dunlap to Nashville (about 130 miles, 2.5 hours) for Music Row and honky-tonks; and Dunlap to the Great Smoky Mountains (about 170 miles, 3.5 hours) for Gatlinburg and Cades Cove. Travel between U.S. states is allowed on RVezy, but trips into Mexico are not permitted under the protection plan.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Here is a realistic snapshot to plan with. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves, but towing one with your truck typically drops you to 10 to 14 MPG. Class C motorhomes generally average 8 to 12 MPG, Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and Class A motorhomes sit around 6 to 10 MPG. Tennessee gas prices typically run a bit cheaper than the national average, so check current rates near your pickup before you leave. For a 300-mile Dunlap-to-Chattanooga-and-back loop in a Class C, plan your fuel budget based on the listing's MPG and current local pump prices. Pro tip: a campervan rental Dunlap travelers love is the Class B, which doubles your MPG and slips into tighter overlooks on TN-111.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far ahead should I reserve a campsite near Dunlap?
Plan ahead and you will get the prime spots. Tennessee State Park campgrounds, including Fall Creek Falls and Harrison Bay, accept reservations up to 12 months in advance through tnstateparks.com, and the most popular waterfront and full-hookup sites at Fall Creek Falls book up 4 to 6 months out for summer weekends and October leaf season. Private parks like R&R RV Campground in Dunlap accept reservations up to 3 months ahead and often have more availability on short notice. For festival weekends like the Coke Ovens Festival, book at least 60 days ahead. Pro tip: reserve your campsite first, then book your RV around it so dates line up perfectly.
tnstateparks.com/What are local driving conditions like around Dunlap?
Driving around Dunlap is genuinely pleasant, especially for an RV. US-127 and the valley floor of Highway 111 are wide, mostly flat, and lightly trafficked compared to interstates. The one thing to know: TN-111 climbs Walden's Ridge between Dunlap and Soddy-Daisy with steep grades, sharp curves, and a brake-check area, so downshift on the descent and take it slow in a tall rig. Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the occasional winter ice event can make ridge roads slick, though Dunlap itself only averages 5 inches of snow a year. Pro tip: avoid driving Walden's Ridge in heavy fog (common at dawn in fall), and you'll have an easy, scenic drive every time.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities do campgrounds near Dunlap offer, and where can I dump or refill water?
You will find full-service amenities at most campgrounds near Dunlap. R&R RV Campground in town offers 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, and a dump station, plus showers and laundry. Fall Creek Falls State Park has over 200 sites with water and electric, dump stations, bathhouses, and a camp store. Harrison Bay State Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric) on Chickamauga Lake. Foster Falls has electric and water sites and a centralized dump. If you are boondocking or staying somewhere without hookups, the Fall Creek Falls dump station is open to non-campers for a small fee. Pro tip: fill fresh water and dump before leaving the campground rather than mid-trip, which keeps your Dunlap RV trip smooth and stink-free.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Dunlap?
More than you would expect, and you will be comfortable from night one. RVs available for rent in Dunlap typically include a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on size, dinette and sofa seating with seatbelts in motorhomes, heating and air conditioning, a TV, and often a backup camera. Many listings include Wi-Fi hotspots, generators or solar for off-grid stays, outdoor speakers, and awnings perfect for evenings under the Sequatchie Valley stars. Each listing has a full amenities checklist, so you can sort by must-haves like a real shower or a dedicated bunkhouse. Family RV trip Dunlap travelers love bunkhouse floor plans for the kids.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dunlap%2C+TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup logistics should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for an RV rental Tennessee guests book in Dunlap include camp chairs and tables, generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, propane top-offs, and outdoor grills. Each host sets their own add-on pricing, shown clearly on the listing before you book. Many hosts also offer paid dump-and-fill service so you return the RV with empty tanks and no fuss. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a meetup spot near Dunlap, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. If you prefer zero hassle, choose a listing with RV delivery Dunlap area hosts already do regularly to local campgrounds. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking for a cleaner final price.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dunlap%2C+TennesseeHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book your RV rental in Dunlap, you pay through the secure RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, no cash or off-platform transfers needed. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before the trip; the exact amount is shown on every listing before you confirm. The deposit is released after your trip wraps up, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition you received it. To avoid any deposit issues, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's dump and fuel-level instructions, and report anything unusual right away through the RVezy app.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around Dunlap if I'm not at a campground?
You have solid options beyond traditional campgrounds. In Tennessee, overnight RV parking is sometimes allowed at Walmart locations and Cracker Barrel parking lots, but policies vary by store, so always call ahead and ask the manager first. Many truck stops along I-24 to the south accept overnight RV stays. For a more scenic stay, look into Harvest Hosts farms and wineries in the Sequatchie Valley, or dispersed camping on Cherokee National Forest land east of the valley, where free camping is generally allowed for up to 14 days outside developed sites. Inside Dunlap city limits, overnight street parking in an RV is not permitted, so plan to either book a campground or use one of the spots above. Pro tip: where to park an RV in Dunlap is easiest at R&R RV Campground for one-night stopovers.
