Campgrounds near East Cleveland, Tennessee
East Cleveland sits at the western edge of the Ocoee River corridor in southeast Tennessee, roughly 35 minutes from Chattanooga and directly adjacent to the Cherokee National Forest. The area functions as a staging point for whitewater rafting on the Ocoee, hiking and mountain biking in the national forest, and lake recreation on Parksville Lake. RV renters typically use it as a base for a mix of river days and forest excursions.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks close to town to river-adjacent sites nearer the rafting put-ins. Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA Journey is the closest developed option to the city itself and works well for larger rigs and families. Adventures Unlimited, Rivers RV Park Campground, Whitewater RV Park, and Skull Island Campground sit farther east along US-64 toward the Ocoee Gorge, placing renters minutes from rafting outfitters and forest trailheads.
Cherokee National Forest is Tennessee's only national forest and provides the broader recreational backdrop for any trip in this area, with the Ocoee/Hiwassee Ranger District managing lands closest to East Cleveland.
Things to do near East Cleveland
Whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River is the headline activity. The Ocoee runs Class III and IV rapids on a dam-controlled schedule set by the Tennessee Valley Authority, so trips are predictable rather than weather-dependent. The Middle Ocoee is the classic commercial run below Dam #2; the Upper section, fed by Dam #3, hosted the 1996 Olympic whitewater events and runs on weekends only in season.
Beyond rafting, the Chilhowee Trail System at the Ocoee area offers roughly 25 miles of hiking and mountain biking, and the Benton Falls Trail is an easy 1.5-mile (each way) hike to a 65-foot waterfall in the Chilhowee Recreation Area. Parksville Lake supports boating, swimming, and fishing.
For a slower pace, the Ocoee Scenic Byway along US-64 delivers gorge views without leaving the RV.

The commercial whitewater season on the Ocoee runs from spring through late October. During spring and fall, the Middle Ocoee has scheduled releases on Saturdays and Sundays only. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Middle section runs five days a week, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Upper Ocoee runs weekends only from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Weekday summer rafting on the Middle is possible on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Many national forest campgrounds in the Ocoee area operate seasonally. Chilhowee Campground, for example, is typically open from early April to late October, with an overflow and day-use area open year-round. Private RV parks around East Cleveland tend to stay open year-round, though amenities may be reduced in colder months.
Summers are hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Fall brings cooler paddling temperatures and hardwood color through the gorge. Winter is mild by regional standards but wet, with occasional freezing rain events that can disrupt travel on the mountain sections of US-64.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

How to book
Cherokee National Forest campgrounds in the Ocoee area, including Chilhowee, Thunder Rock, and Parksville, are reserved through Recreation.gov. Reservations open on a rolling six-month window, with sites at Chilhowee bookable at least four days ahead and up to six months in advance. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially those aligned with Upper Ocoee release dates, and a cancellation and reservation fee applies to national forest sites.
Tennessee State Parks sites, such as Gee Creek in the Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park, are booked through the Tennessee State Parks reservation system. Private parks near East Cleveland, including Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA Journey, Adventures Unlimited, Rivers RV Park Campground, Whitewater RV Park, and Skull Island Campground, are booked directly with each property. For peak summer weekends and fall color weekends in October, book several weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
Private RV parks in the East Cleveland and Ocoee corridor generally offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, water, sewer, and often cable or Wi-Fi. Expect paved or gravel pads, on-site laundry at several parks, and easy US-64 access. Some properties, including Whitewater RV Park, include on-site amenities such as food service and dog areas.
National forest campgrounds are more rustic. Most sites have picnic tables, fire rings, and access to bathhouses; Chilhowee offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites, while other Ocoee-area forest campgrounds have limited or no hookups and often accommodate only smaller rigs. Food storage rules apply throughout the forest, with bear-proof containers or hard-sided storage required.
Cell coverage weakens in the Ocoee Gorge. Plan navigation and reservations before leaving town.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cleveland,TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in East Cleveland, Tennessee?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in East Cleveland, Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Safety does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers under 26,001 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform before pickup. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in. That's it. You'll be cruising US-64 toward the Ocoee in no time.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services/classd.htmlIs my RV rental in East Cleveland TN covered by protection?
Yes, every RV rental in Cleveland booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out Highway 64 toward the Ocoee River Gorge with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your preferred coverage level at checkout, not the host. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap does not ruin your trip. Pro tip: if it is your first time renting an RV, the higher tier with a lower deductible is usually worth the small extra cost per night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Cleveland TN RV rental?
You are not locked in. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy across every booking (hosts do not set their own), which includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, refund amounts depend on how far you are from your trip start date. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy will refund the guest or help rebook. Review the cancellation details at checkout and contact RVezy support if plans change. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Ocoee rafting season, knowing flexibility is built in.

Once you're rolling, the Cherokee National Forest is a paradise for leashed pups, with the Chilhowee Recreation Area, Benton Falls Trail, and the dog-friendly shoreline at Parksville Lake all within a 30 minute drive. Most local campgrounds welcome pets with a small nightly fee. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes, then pack a tie-out and extra water for those warm Tennessee afternoons.
fs.usda.gov/cherokeeCan the RV be delivered to my campground in East Cleveland?
Yes, RV delivery in Cleveland is one of the most popular add-ons on RVezy, and it is a game changer for first time renters. Many local hosts will drive your motorhome or travel trailer directly to popular spots like Chilhowee Campground, Parksville Lake, or a private property in the Ocoee River Corridor, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery and enter your destination address to see availability and any per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery is especially smart for travel trailers, since you skip towing entirely and just show up to a fully set-up basecamp.

Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-stop Cleveland RV trip through the Smokies and Asheville, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message hosts to negotiate a bigger mileage package upfront.

recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time to rent an RV in East Cleveland, TN?
East Cleveland's sweet spot runs late March through early November, but each season has its charm. Spring (March to May) brings highs in the 60s and 70s with blooming dogwoods and roaring waterfalls. Summer (June to August) sees highs in the upper 80s to low 90s — perfect for rafting the Ocoee, which runs scheduled water releases Friday through Sunday plus Wednesdays in peak months. Fall (September to early November) is arguably the best, with mid-70s days, crisp nights, and brilliant Cherokee National Forest foliage. Winters are mild (40s to 50s) and great for budget travel. Pro tip: book early-October weekends now — leaf-peeper demand peaks fast.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never rented an RV before. Is it really doable in Cleveland TN?
Totally doable, and your host has your back. Every RVezy rental in Cleveland TN starts with a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, where the owner shows you how to operate the slide-outs, generator, water system, propane, and everything else. You can also message your host anytime before booking with questions, and RVezy's 24/7 support is one tap away. For your first time renting an RV, consider booking a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or having a travel trailer delivered and set up for you. Pro tip: do a short Walmart-parking-lot loop in Cleveland before heading up the curvy Chilhowee Mountain road.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhat if something breaks down during my Ocoee River RV trip?
Do not sweat it. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common headaches like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows. If something inside the RV stops working (think AC, fridge, or generator), message your host first: most Cleveland-area owners live nearby and can troubleshoot quickly or drop off a replacement part. RVezy support is also available around the clock by phone and chat. Pro tip: cell service can get spotty along the Ocoee Gorge on US-64, so screenshot the roadside assistance number before you head into the Cherokee National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cleveland TN RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is fair game and one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Cleveland. You can easily roll into Georgia (the Blue Ridge Mountains are about 45 minutes east), North Carolina (Asheville is about 3 hours northeast), or Alabama and Kentucky for longer hauls, all covered under your standard RVezy protection. Travel into Canada or Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across those borders. Pro tip: a 5-day loop through Cleveland, the Smokies, and Asheville is the regional classic.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Realistic numbers for an RV rental in Cleveland TN: Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 MPG, and a midsize truck pulling a travel trailer typically sees 10 to 14 MPG. Tennessee gas prices are among the lowest in the country, recently averaging around $2.80 to $3.10 per gallon. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop through the Ocoee Gorge in a Class C, budget roughly $60 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's on I-75 exit 20 in Cleveland before heading east — prices climb sharply once you're in the mountains.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cleveland, TN?
For peak summer and fall foliage weekends, book your campsite 4 to 6 months ahead — Cherokee National Forest sites at Chilhowee, Parksville Lake, and Thunder Rock fill up fast and are reservable on Recreation.gov exactly 6 months in advance. State parks like Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River use ReserveTNStateParks.com on a 12-month rolling window. Private parks like KOA Cleveland/Chattanooga have more last-minute availability. Midweek and shoulder-season (April or October weekdays) you can often score sites just a week or two out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 6-month-mark Recreation.gov drop — the prized Chilhowee mountain-view sites disappear within minutes for July 4th weekend.
recreation.gov/What's it like driving an RV around East Cleveland and the Ocoee Gorge?
Driving in and around East Cleveland is genuinely easy. I-75 and the four-lane US-64 bypass handle motorhomes of any size, and downtown Cleveland streets are wide and RV-friendly. Things get more interesting once you head east into the Ocoee River Gorge on US-64 — it's a beautiful, winding two-lane road with tight turns and limited shoulders, so take it slow in larger Class A rigs. Forest Service Road 77 up to Chilhowee Mountain is paved but steep with switchbacks. Avoid Old Copper Road (the historic narrow stretch). Pro tip: check weather before mountain drives — afternoon thunderstorms in summer can make Chilhowee descents slippery.
tn.gov/tdot/driver-how-do-i/check-current-road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near East Cleveland, TN?
You'll find a great mix. Cherokee National Forest sites like Chilhowee and Parksville Lake offer water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers, and dump stations on-site (no individual sewer hookups). Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park has full hookups at many sites. Private parks like KOA Cleveland/Chattanooga and Thunder Mountain offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Potable water fill stations are available at every campground listed. Pro tip: grocery options thin out fast east of Cleveland — stock up at the Walmart on Paul Huff Parkway or Publix on 25th Street before heading into the Cherokee National Forest.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/cherokee/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=34804&actid=29What should I expect inside a typical RV rental in Cleveland TN?
Most motorhome rental Cleveland TN options come fully equipped for a turnkey trip. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/sofa sleepers (sleeping 4 to 8), a working kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink, and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC, furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many listings include a generator for off-grid power, outdoor camp chairs, and a TV; some offer Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Linens, kitchen kits, and outdoor mats are commonly included or available as extras. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm exactly how many seatbelts are installed if you're traveling with kids.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Cleveland TN?
When you rent an RV in Cleveland, the most popular add-ons are delivery and setup, generator usage hours, linen and kitchen packages, outdoor gear (camp chairs, grills, bikes), and portable Wi-Fi hotspots, each priced individually by the host and clearly listed before checkout. Pickup is usually at the host's home address in or near Cleveland, with most rentals available from 1 PM and dropoff typically by 11 AM (hosts can be flexible if asked early). Mileage policies vary, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per night plus an option to prepay extra miles at a discount. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and generator hours at booking to lock in lower rates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cleveland,TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Easy and transparent. You pay through RVezy's secure platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, so every transaction is tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, then released back to you within several business days after dropoff assuming no damage and the RV is returned with the agreed fuel and tank levels. The total trip cost, including the protection plan and any add-ons, is shown clearly at checkout. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff: it is the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes.
