The Elk River is the main draw at Elkton itself, with a boat launch and paddling access a few miles from town. Mill Creek RV Park rents bikes for the roughly 9-mile historic railroad-bed walking trail that crosses a covered bridge and runs into the town of Elkmont. Day trips reach several established parks. Tims Ford State Park covers 3,546 acres on Tims Ford Reservoir in the shadows of the Cumberland Plateau, and Tims Ford Lake is regarded as one of the top bass fishing and recreational lakes in the Southeast. David Crockett State Park in Lawrenceburg blends natural features with sites connected to the life and legacy of David Crockett, with hiking, fishing, biking, paddling, and birding. Jack Daniel's Distillery in Lynchburg and downtown Huntsville with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center are both within about an hour by RV.

Middle Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and muggy, winters are short and damp with occasional cold snaps, and cloud cover shifts through the year. Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, with weekends at nearby state parks filling well in advance for holidays and lake-country events. Spring brings the wettest stretches and occasional severe thunderstorms, but also the most comfortable daytime temperatures. Summer sees consistent heat and humidity: July is the hottest month in the area, with an average high near 88°F and average low near 66°F. Shade, hookups with 50-amp service, and lake access matter more than ever in July and August. Fall is the driest, most stable season and a favorite for touring. Winter camping is possible: Tims Ford is open year-round, with 168 campsites across three areas (Main, Turkey Creek, and Fairview). At David Crockett, Campground #1 along Shoal Creek is open March 1 to November 3, while Campground #2, with paved sites and full electric and water hookups, is open year-round.

State-park campgrounds in the area are well equipped for RVs. At Tims Ford, all sites have 30-amp electric service and water hookups, four sites also have sewer hookups, a dump station is located at the entrance for self-contained rigs, two centrally located heated bathhouses provide hot showers and bathrooms, and each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill. David Crockett's newer loop is more RV-friendly. Campground 2 is newer with larger concrete pads that are more accommodating for RVs, the overall design includes a double loop layout with some downhill sections, and most sites have at least partial shade. Visitors should also note posted hazards at David Crockett, including flash flooding in Shoal Creek and inclement weather closures at the boat dock and Campground 1. Private parks near Elkton skew smaller and quieter, with pull-through sites, full hookups on many pads, and easy interstate access, but fewer resort amenities than tourist-corridor parks.
