Camping near Grimsley, Tennessee
Grimsley is an unincorporated community in Fentress County on the Cumberland Plateau in north-central Tennessee, roughly midway between Jamestown and Crossville. The location puts RV travelers within easy reach of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, which sits in some of the most rugged terrain of the Cumberland Plateau and encompasses approximately 125,000 acres of rocky gorges and forested plateaus, where numerous pristine streams unite with the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River.
Campground options in the area range from full-hookup private RV parks to horse-focused resorts and rustic sites. East Fork Stables, Country Life RV Parks & Services, Holpps Pine Ridge Lake Campground, Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins, and Freedom Hills Campground are all within a short drive of Grimsley. East Fork Stables sits just outside Jamestown and is a major regional draw: it is the largest horse campground in the Big South Fork area, with a 100-mile trail system running through 12,000 acres of private land.
Beyond the plateau parks, day trips reach Cumberland Mountain State Park, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, and the Obed Wild and Scenic River.
Things to do around Grimsley
The core draw is Big South Fork. The recreation area offers hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Numerous trails snake through the recreation area, offering mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding for visitors. Trailheads at Bandy Creek, Leatherwood Ford, and Twin Arches give access to sandstone bluffs, natural arches, and river overlooks suitable for a range of ability levels.
Horseback riding is a signature activity on this side of the plateau. The 12,000 acres of private land at East Fork Stables offers trail riding with over a hundred miles of trails that border Big South Fork National Recreation Area. Families staying at nearby RV parks can add flatwater paddling on area lakes, rock climbing and paddling at the Obed Wild and Scenic River, and hiking at Frozen Head State Park within a reasonable drive.

The Grimsley area has a humid subtropical climate on the Cumberland Plateau, with four distinct seasons and rain in every month. Crossville, the nearest climate station, falls under the Köppen-Geiger classification Cfa, and there is significant rainfall throughout the year in Crossville, and even the driest month still has a lot of rainfall. Elevation on the plateau keeps summer highs a few degrees cooler than lowland Tennessee, which is a real advantage for RV travel.
Peak season runs from spring through mid-fall, when park campgrounds are fully open. Bandy Creek Campground is open year-round on the reservation system, and other Big South Fork campgrounds have a similar seasonal pattern, with a limited number of sites available in the off-season.
Spring brings wildflowers and strong whitewater flows on the Big South Fork. Summer is warm, humid, and busy at the family-oriented campgrounds. The wettest month in Crossville is usually December, while fall delivers the driest weather and reliable foliage on the plateau. Winter is mild by northern standards but can bring freezing overnight temperatures and occasional snow.
How to book campgrounds near Grimsley
Reservation systems vary by campground type. Campground reservations for sites within Big South Fork must be made online through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, and reservations may be made up to 180 days in advance with the exception of group camp which can be reserved up to 360 days in advance. Reservations are limited to 14 consecutive days for each stay and 30 nights total in one year.
Private campgrounds like East Fork Stables, Country Life RV Parks & Services, Holpps Pine Ridge Lake Campground, Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins, and Freedom Hills Campground book directly through their own websites or phone lines. Deposits are common, and holiday weekends fill first. Book several months ahead for summer and October foliage weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of RV park amenities and rustic plateau camping. Private parks in the Grimsley area typically offer full or partial hookups, pull-through sites, dump stations, showers, and laundry. East Fork Stables facilities include four campgrounds from full hookup to primitive sites, plus stalls, picket lines, paddocks, corral panels, cabins, bunkhouses, and two bathhouses.
In national park campgrounds, expect fewer amenities but larger, wooded sites. Bandy Creek combines traditional woods camping with flush toilets, hot showers and electric hookups, accommodates both RV and tent camping, and offers spacious sites with picnic areas and plenty of shade. A dump station is located near the registration kiosk, and there are no sewer hook-ups at individual trailer sites. Cell coverage on the plateau can be spotty, and roads to trailheads are often winding.

Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, so message the owner before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there.
