Camping near Gruetli-Laager, Tennessee
Gruetli-Laager sits on the Cumberland Plateau in Grundy County, Tennessee, at roughly 1,900 feet of elevation. The town works well as a base for RV trips into South Cumberland State Park, which features one vehicle-accessible campground, Foster Falls, and four backcountry campgrounds: Father Adamz, Grundy Forest, Small Wilds, and Little Cove. The park itself is large and split up: it is divided into three units, Savage Gulf in Grundy and Sequatchie Counties, Fiery Gizzard in Grundy and Marion counties, and Sherwood Forest in Franklin County, and none of these regions are connected, so drivers need to move between them by road.
RV renters have a mix of options within a short drive. Greeter Falls Campground and Bigfoot RV Park and Campground handle rigs that need hookups, Foster Falls - South Cumberland State Park covers rustic tent-and-small-trailer camping inside the state park, and Camp Chet and Big Mouth Cave Retreat add more secluded, plateau-style stays. The area is just under an hour northwest of Chattanooga and under two hours southeast from Nashville, which keeps supply runs and travel days manageable.
Expect waterfalls, gorges, and hardwood forest rather than lakefront or coastal scenery.
Things to do around Gruetli-Laager
Hiking is the main draw. South Cumberland State Park sits within four Tennessee counties and covers roughly 30,845 acres of hiking and backcountry terrain, with waterfalls, cascading streams, rocky gorges, lush woodlands, and rock formations, including Foster Falls in Marion County, and twelve trailheads that provide access through the Southern Cumberland Plateau. Families staying at Greeter Falls Campground are less than a half mile from the Greeter Falls Trailhead, adjacent to the 16,000 acre Savage Gulf area with over 50 miles of well-marked trails, and a short loop connects to three waterfalls and the nearby Blue Hole swimming area.
Rock climbing is regulated. All rock climbing requires advance online registration; at Stone Door, climbing and rappelling is only allowed in the designated climbing area, in the Fiery Gizzard climbing is restricted to routes in the Foster Falls climbing area only, and at Denny Cove climbing is restricted to routes on the north cliff face.
Swimming holes, picnicking, and wildlife viewing round out the day-trip list.

The plateau has four real seasons. South Cumberland State Park is open year-round, but most visitors come in summer, when daytime temperatures are typically in the low 80s, to take advantage of swimming spots including creeks and lakes; spring and fall are also popular, with cooler temperatures on the trails and migrating birds, while winter daytime temperatures are typically in the mid to high 40s. Spring brings blooming mountain laurel, azalea, and hemlock understory near the waterfalls, and fall delivers hardwood color across the plateau.
Rain shapes trip planning more than temperature. Annual precipitation in Gruetli-Laager is roughly 61 inches per year, and snow covers the ground about 8 days per year, so trails can be muddy and creeks high after storms, particularly in late winter and early spring. February is the snowiest month, with snow falling for about 5 days and accumulating around 2 to 3 inches, though accumulations rarely disrupt travel for long.
Mid-April to May and mid-September to October are the most comfortable windows for RV camping, with lower humidity than midsummer.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

How to book a campsite
State park sites and private campgrounds use different systems. In South Cumberland State Park all overnight camping requires advance online reservations, camping must be in designated campgrounds, check-in is 12:00 pm Central and check-out is 10:00 am Central, and all overnight campsites require a fee. Booking in advance is recommended, bookings can be secured online or by phone up to one year in advance, and booking fees are non-refundable, so dates should be double-checked.
Private campgrounds book directly. Greeter Falls Campground takes reservations through its own website and through third-party platforms, and offers 36 RV and travel trailer sites with 30/50 amp service plus furnished cabins, yurts, and tent sites. Camp Chet, Bigfoot RV Park and Campground, and Big Mouth Cave Retreat also handle bookings directly, so RV renters should call ahead for hookup type and rig-length limits.
What to expect on the ground
Foster Falls - South Cumberland State Park is rustic. There are 26 rustic campsites suited to tents and small trailers with no hookups, but heated showers, flush toilets, and drinking water are available, and every site has a fire ring and picnic table. Generators are not permitted, so RV campers should plan power accordingly. Foster Falls is the only camping area within South Cumberland State Park that vehicles can enter, and it can only fit smaller RVs; there are no spaces for large rigs.
Larger rigs should route to Greeter Falls Campground or Bigfoot RV Park and Campground for hookups. Sites at Greeter Falls are spread across a 23-acre wooded property at roughly 4 sites per acre, well below the national campground average of 10 to 15, so the feel is wooded rather than parking-lot dense.
Cell coverage is spotty on the plateau; download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Gruetli-Laager, TN?
An RV rental in Gruetli-Laager is one of the most affordable ways to explore Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and Class A coaches from $250 and up. Hosts set their own nightly rates, so weeknight stays and shoulder-season trips (late March or November) often unlock the cheapest RV rental Gruetli-Laager has available. Filter by price range and message a few hosts about multi-night discounts, and a 4-night Savage Gulf adventure for under $700 plus fuel is realistic.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gruetli-Laager,TennesseeDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Tennessee?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Gruetli-Laager. Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit. No test, no endorsement, no surprises at pickup.

Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Delivery fees typically scale with distance, but for nervous first-timers, it's worth every penny.

weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You've got this, first time renting an RV is easier than people expect, especially around Gruetli-Laager. Start with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet, they drive like an oversized van. RVezy customer support is also available around the clock before, during, and after your trip. In a remote area like Savage Gulf where cell service can drop, download offline maps and note the closest service town (Tracy City or McMinnville) before you head out.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007034-Renter-FAQWhat should I budget for fuel on my Gruetli-Laager RV trip?
Smart planning here saves real money. Tennessee typically posts some of the lower gas prices in the country, and Chattanooga consistently has some of the cheapest pumps in the state. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, and 12 to 16 mpg for a pickup towing a travel trailer. For a 4-day loop covering 400 miles in a Class C, budget around $130 to $180 for fuel at current pump prices. Pro tip: fill up in Manchester or Monteagle before heading into Grundy County, the small-town stations near Gruetli-Laager often run higher per gallon.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=TNHow far in advance should I reserve a campground near Gruetli-Laager?
Lock in early and you'll get the best campgrounds near Gruetli-Laager. Tennessee State Parks open reservations up to 12 months in advance through tnstateparks.com, and Fall Creek Falls full-hookup sites for October fall-foliage weekends are typically gone by June. For summer weekends, aim for 3 to 4 months ahead; for shoulder-season weeknights, 2 to 3 weeks is usually fine. Foster Falls and Savage Gulf's Stone Door area also fill quickly on holiday weekends. Pro tip: check the reservation map on Sunday evenings, cancellations often pop up then.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsWhat are the roads and driving conditions like around Gruetli-Laager?
Driving here is genuinely enjoyable. Gruetli-Laager sits at about 1,900 feet on the Cumberland Plateau, and the main routes (TN-108, TN-56, and US-41) are paved, well-maintained, and refreshingly low-traffic compared to Nashville or Knoxville. Expect some steep grades climbing onto the plateau from Pelham Valley and a few tight switchbacks near Beersheba Springs, take them slow in a larger motorhome. Winter (December to February) can bring occasional ice on bridges and shaded curves, so check the National Weather Service forecast before heading out. Summer afternoon thunderstorms roll through quickly. Otherwise, it's pure scenic cruising through hardwood forest.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Gruetli-Laager?
You'll be comfortable. Fall Creek Falls Campground offers 30-amp and 50-amp electric, water hookups at most sites, full sewer at many sites, multiple bathhouses, a laundry facility, camp store, and a dump station. Foster Falls Campground has water and electric at its sites plus a bathhouse. For potable water fills and dump stations between trips, the Fall Creek Falls visitor area is a reliable stop. Most South Cumberland backcountry sites are primitive, no hookups, so plan a dump-and-fill day at Fall Creek Falls before heading deeper into the plateau. Bring your sewer hose, electrical adapter, and a 25-foot drinking water hose.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Gruetli-Laager?
More than you'd guess. Most RVezy rentals near Gruetli-Laager come fully equipped: a queen bed (often plus bunks or a convertible dinette), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and sink, a wet bath or full bathroom with shower, air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, generator, outdoor speakers, and onboard Wi-Fi hotspots, useful since cell service drops in Savage Gulf's canyons. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 6, travel trailers 4 to 8, and Class A coaches up to 8. Each listing shows exactly what's included, so you'll know whether to pack just clothes or also bring linens.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gruetli-Laager,TennesseeWhat add-ons can I get with my Gruetli-Laager RV rental?
Hosts love making your trip easy. Popular RVezy add-ons in the area include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor mats, bikes, generators, propane refills, and the very popular delivery and setup service. Pickup and dropoff usually happens at the host's home or a mutually agreed location near Tracy City, Coalmont, or Monteagle. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 free miles per day with $0.30 to $0.45 per extra mile, though some hosts offer unlimited mileage packages for longer trips. Review the add-on menu on each listing and bundle what you need before you check out.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gruetli-Laager,TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. Payment is processed entirely through RVezy, you pay with a credit or debit card at booking, and funds are held by RVezy (not the host) until your trip begins. A security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment, typically held as a temporary authorization on your card, and it's released after your trip if there's no damage. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, return it with the same fuel and propane levels, and follow the host's dumping instructions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping near Gruetli-Laager a good idea?
It's an underrated adventure. Winter on the Cumberland Plateau brings crisp 30 to 50 degree days, leafless views that reveal hidden waterfalls, fewer bugs, and trails you'll have nearly to yourself. Many RVezy hosts list winter-ready rigs with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups, just message the host to confirm cold-weather prep. Fall Creek Falls Campground stays open year-round, while some Foster Falls and primitive sites close seasonally. Pack extra propane (the furnace is the biggest user), let one faucet drip overnight if temps dip below 25, and enjoy a Gruetli-Laager RV trip with fireside evenings and starry plateau skies.
