Campgrounds near Harrogate, Tennessee
Harrogate sits at the base of Cumberland Gap in northeast Tennessee, at the tri-state meeting point of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. The town serves as a practical staging area for RV trips into Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and the surrounding Appalachian ridges, with campgrounds within a short drive that suit both hookup rigs and dry campers.
The primary public option is Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, a 150-site National Park Service campground located off Highway 58 in Virginia, about three miles from the park visitor center. Private and specialty campgrounds in the surrounding hills round out the choices for renters. Mountain Pass Campground and Mountain View Campground Speedwell offer commercial RV setups south and west of the park, while Marty's ATV Oasis LLC caters to off-road riders and Rock Bottom Horse Camp serves equestrian travelers.
Union Avenue in Harrogate connects to US 25E, which crosses under the mountain through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel, so campers can reach Middlesboro, Kentucky, and Ewing, Virginia, without a mountain climb.
Things to do near Harrogate
The main draw is Cumberland Gap National Historical Park itself. The park spans roughly 24,000 acres, includes thousands of acres managed as wilderness, and is free to enter.
From Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, trails lead directly into forested ridges. Popular targets include the Pinnacle Overlook for long-range mountain views, the White Rocks cliffs, Sand Cave, and the historic Hensley Settlement. Gap Cave is accessible only by ranger-guided tour, with tickets and information available at the park visitor center.
Families can also stand at the Tri-State Peak marker where Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia meet, watch interpretive programs at the visitor center in Middlesboro, and drive nearby ridgelines. Off-road riders base out of Marty's ATV Oasis LLC for trail access, and Rock Bottom Horse Camp connects to equestrian routes, including the 17-mile Ridge Trail from the Pinnacle to White Rocks.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Harrogate. Days warm into the sixties and seventies Fahrenheit, wildflowers move up the ridges through April and May, and fall color typically peaks in mid to late October. Late spring can be wet, with thunderstorms building over the mountains in the afternoon.
Summer brings hot, humid conditions with highs commonly in the mid eighties and frequent afternoon storms. This is the busiest booking window, so reservable sites at Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park and the nearby private parks fill well ahead of holiday weekends. Trails can be muddy after storms, and biting insects are active.
Winter is short but genuinely cold at elevation, with freezing overnight lows and occasional snow. At Wilderness Road, loops B, C, and D stay open from mid-November through mid-March along with the comfort station between loops C and D, while the bathhouse between loops A and B and the other loops close for the winter season. RVers should plan for water management in freezing conditions.
How to book campgrounds near Harrogate
Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park is reservation-based through Recreation.gov. Standard sites open on a six-month rolling window, and group campsites in loops G and O can be reserved up to twelve months in advance. Reservations can also be made by phone at 1-877-444-6777 or through the Recreation.gov mobile app.
Of the 150 sites, 43 in loops B and C offer 20, 30, and 50-amp electric hookups, and these fill first for RV renters. Most sites require backing in, with one pull-through site.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Mountain Pass Campground, Mountain View Campground Speedwell, Marty's ATV Oasis LLC, and Rock Bottom Horse Camp, are booked directly with the operator. Reserve summer holidays and October color weekends several months ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Sites at Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park are wooded with partial to full shade, on paved loop roads, with many pads on a gentle to moderate slope. Leveling blocks are strongly recommended. Cell service is generally usable on major carriers, but there is no campground Wi-Fi. Comfort stations include hot showers and potable water, and a dump station near the entrance is for registered campers only. Individual sites do not have water hookups.
Supplies including groceries, fuel, and hardware are available in Harrogate, Cumberland Gap, and Middlesboro, all within a short drive. The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Visitor Center is on US 25E just south of Middlesboro, Kentucky, and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and vehicles must be parked on the paved pad. Poison ivy grows throughout the campground, so stay on marked trails and wipe down pets.

For a typical 300-mile loop from Harrogate through Cumberland Gap, the Smoky Mountains, and back, budget around $90 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Stations in Middlesboro, KY and Tazewell, TN often have the best prices nearby. Pro tip: fill up in New Tazewell before heading into the park, prices climb closer to tourist areas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Harrogate?
For peak season, book sooner rather than later, but you've got more flexibility here than in heavily trafficked parks. Wilderness Road Campground in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park opens reservations six months in advance through Recreation.gov, and summer weekends plus October leaf-peeping dates fill up first. Tennessee State Parks like Indian Mountain and Cove Lake take reservations through Reserve America up to a year out. For private parks like Mountain Pass Campground, two to four weeks ahead is usually enough. Pro tip: if you're flexible, Sunday through Thursday arrivals are almost always available, even in October, and rates are often lower.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/258617What are driving conditions like around Harrogate?
Driving around Harrogate is mostly relaxed, with one notable feature: the Cumberland Gap Tunnel on US-25E, a 4,600-foot twin-bore tunnel connecting Tennessee and Kentucky that's free to use and easily handles RVs (no propane restrictions for personal RVs). Local roads like US-25E and US-58 are wide, paved, and RV-friendly. Expect winding mountain grades on smaller routes such as TN-63 heading toward Norris Lake, so take it slow and use lower gears on descents. Winter occasionally brings ice to ridge roads from December to February. Pro tip: avoid driving narrow back roads after dark, deer are abundant in Claiborne County at dusk.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhere can I dump tanks and fill water near Harrogate?
You've got several convenient options. Wilderness Road Campground has a dump station near the entrance (reservation holders only) plus potable water at all comfort stations. Mountain Pass Campground offers full hookups at every site, so you can dump and fill on your own pad. Indian Mountain State Park and Cove Lake State Park both have public dump stations and freshwater fills. Most sites at these campgrounds include 20/30/50-amp electric, so your campervan rental Harrogate or motorhome stays powered up. Pro tip: top off freshwater before leaving the campground, the next reliable fill heading toward the Smokies is in Sevierville.

Mileage allowances typically run 100 to 150 miles per day, with overage at $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Payment is straightforward and fully online, no cash exchanges at pickup. When you book your RV rental in Harrogate, TN, you'll pay through RVezy's secure platform using a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment and is placed as a hold on your card before the trip, then released after a clean return. As long as you bring the RV back on time, fueled per the host's instructions, and damage-free, the hold simply drops off. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and dropoff so any questions are easy to resolve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Harrogate during winter?
Yes, and winter in the Cumberland Gap region is a quietly magical time to go. Many RVezy hosts in Harrogate rent year-round, and Wilderness Road Campground in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stays open year-round, though water service is typically shut off in the colder months. Look for RVs with heated holding tanks, a furnace, and shore power capability so freezing nights aren't an issue. Daytime highs hover in the 40s to low 50s, with occasional snow on the ridges. Pro tip: ask your host about cold-weather prep and pack tank antifreeze just in case.
