Camping near Helenwood, Tennessee
Helenwood is an unincorporated community in Scott County on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, situated along U.S. Route 27 just north of Huntsville. It sits at roughly 1,388 feet of elevation and functions primarily as a jumping-off point for the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, a federal unit of rocky gorges, sandstone arches, and forested plateaus that straddles the Tennessee-Kentucky border. The park encompasses approximately 125,000 acres.
For RV travelers, the area combines federal campgrounds inside Big South Fork with nearby private parks. Bandy Creek is the flagship developed campground inside the park, offering flush toilets, hot showers, and electric hookups on the Tennessee side. Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA serves equestrian and non-equestrian campers with water and 30-amp electric on each site, plus tie-outs for horses.
Private options close to Helenwood include Trails End Campground, Winona/New River KOA, and Zenith Stables and Campground, which broaden the choice of hookups, amenities, and location relative to the plateau's main trailheads and river accesses.
Things to do near Helenwood
The main draw is Big South Fork itself. Miles of trails wind through the recreation area for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River supports paddling, fishing, and floating. Sandstone arches, chimneys, and cliffs are scattered across the plateau.
Families staying at Bandy Creek - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area can use the seasonal swimming pool, volleyball court, playgrounds, and ball fields on site. The pool typically operates on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Horseback riders often base at Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA or Zenith Stables and Campground to reach the equestrian trail network, with the Station Camp River Access a short drive away.
Historic sites are within day-trip range, including the Blue Heron Mine, a reconstructed 1950s coal-mining community roughly 20 miles from Bandy Creek.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Helenwood. Wildflowers bloom on the plateau from April into May, and October brings hardwood color across the gorges. Overnight temperatures can still drop close to freezing in March and November, so hookups with electric heat make a noticeable difference.
Summer is warm and humid, with July the hottest month and average highs near the mid-80s Fahrenheit. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the seasonal swimming pool at Bandy Creek is a useful hedge on hot afternoons. This is peak booking season, and weekends inside Big South Fork typically fill well ahead.
Winter camping is possible because Bandy Creek loops B and C, Station Camp, and Alum Ford stay open year-round, but the plateau sees occasional snow and ice. Some private campgrounds reduce services or close seasonally, so confirmation ahead of arrival is important. Water systems can be shut off during hard freezes.
Reservations and booking
Campgrounds inside Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, including Bandy Creek and Station Camp, are booked through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Individual campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance, while the Bandy Creek group camp opens up to one year ahead. Check-in at Bandy Creek is 2 p.m. and check-out is noon Eastern Time.
Demand for Bandy Creek is high, and popular weekends often sell out the moment the booking window opens. Setting a cancellation alert on Recreation.gov is a practical backup if the desired dates show unavailable.
Private campgrounds near Helenwood such as Trails End Campground, Winona/New River KOA, and Zenith Stables and Campground handle bookings through their own websites or by phone, and generally have shorter lead times than the federal sites.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the plateau are winding and, in places, steep. The Highway 297 approach from Oneida to Bandy Creek includes a 13 percent downhill grade with tight curves as it drops into the river gorge, which is a significant consideration for longer motorhomes and towed trailers. The National Park Service specifically flags this route in a travel advisory for Bandy Creek visitors.
Inside Big South Fork, Bandy Creek offers electric and water hookups on many sites, flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station. Sites are spacious and shaded.
Horse camps like Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA are reached via gravel roads, so slow, careful driving is expected on the final approach. Food storage rules are enforced due to black-bear activity, and firewood should be sourced locally to comply with pest quarantines.

For dinner, the Phillips General Store in Rugby serves Cumberland Plateau comfort food.
