Huntsville camping overview
Huntsville sits in Scott County on the Cumberland Plateau, immediately south of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Big South Fork is located in north central Tennessee and southeastern Kentucky in some of the most rugged terrain of the Cumberland Plateau, and the park encompasses approximately 125,000 acres including rocky gorges and forested plateaus. The federal park anchors most RV trips to the area. Bandy Creek, the park's largest developed campground, lies west of Oneida off Highway 297 and serves as the main hub for visitor services.
Options cover a range of styles. Bandy Creek combines the experience of traditional woods camping with the modern conveniences of flush toilets, hot showers and electric hookups, and sites can accommodate groups and both RV and tent camping. Station Horse Camp is a developed equestrian site inside the park. Winona/New River KOA offers a private-park experience with standard RV amenities, while Trails End Campground and Zenith Stables and Campground round out the nearby choices.
Most RV travelers base out of Bandy Creek or Winona/New River KOA, then day-trip into the gorge for hiking, paddling, and horseback riding.
Things to do near Huntsville
Trail miles are the main draw. There are more than 200 miles of horse trails winding through the park, giving hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians extensive routes from a single base camp. Numerous trails snake through the Recreation Area, offering mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding for visitors. Whitewater paddling, fishing, and rock climbing are also common activities inside the recreation area.
A swimming pool, along with on-site volleyball court, playgrounds and ball fields, make Bandy Creek an ideal spot for families. The Bandy Creek Visitor Center issues permits and provides orientation for new arrivals.
Located just under 20 miles from Bandy Creek is the Blue Heron Mine, also known as Mine 18, a historic abandoned mining town that has been rebuilt as an outdoor museum, and visitors can hear audio presentations from actual people who lived in the community in the 1950s.

Summer is peak season on the plateau. Days run warm and muggy, afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, and the Bandy Creek Swimming Pool is open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day. Reservable sites fill weeks ahead on holiday weekends, so lock in dates early.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. Higher river flows favor spring paddling, while October brings drier weather and hardwood color across the gorge. Shoulder-season nights can be cold, with freezes possible into late March and returning by late October.
Winter camping is possible at Bandy Creek, which stays open year-round, but expect cold, wet weather and periodic snow. Some park facilities and neighboring private parks reduce hours or close seasonally. Blue Heron Campground is closed December through March.
How to book campgrounds near Huntsville
Sites inside Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, including Bandy Creek and Station Horse Camp, are reserved through Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777. Standard sites can be booked up to 6 months ahead of time, and group sites up to one year in advance.
Reservations are limited to 14 consecutive days for each stay and 30 nights total in one year. Adding or subtracting a day or switching to a different campsite is free, while cancellations carry a small service fee if made before the arrival day.
Private options like Winona/New River KOA, Trails End Campground, and Zenith Stables and Campground book directly through their own websites or phone lines. For summer weekends and fall color weekends, reserve as early as the booking window opens.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the gorge are steep. Travelers approaching Bandy Creek from Oneida on Highway 297 encounter a 13 percent downhill grade and winding curves as the road descends into the gorge and crosses the Big South Fork River. Drivers of larger RVs and any rig towing should plan the route carefully and use low gears.
The check-in time for Bandy Creek is 2pm and check-out time is noon. Cell service is limited but usable for texting on major carriers, and free WiFi is available at the Bandy Creek Visitor Center.
Do not move firewood: help protect our forests by preventing the spread of tree-killing pests, and obtain firewood at or near your destination and burn it on-site. Buy firewood locally or at the visitor center.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntsville%2C%20TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Huntsville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Huntsville, TN. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. To book through RVezy you must be at least 25 years old and be added as an approved driver, with identification verified through the platform during checkout, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, leaving more time to plan stops at Bandy Creek and Honey Creek Loop.

Booking an RV trip in Huntsville is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, manages the cancellation policy. There is a built-in grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional flexibility applies based on how far out your trip start date is. Special circumstances such as severe weather, which can occasionally affect mountain roads on the Cumberland Plateau, are also considered. You will see the exact terms during checkout, so there are no surprises. The takeaway: you can confidently lock in that early spring or fall booking now, knowing you have options if your plans shift before your Huntsville RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip in Huntsville?
Absolutely, and the Cumberland Plateau is one of the most dog-friendly regions in Tennessee. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental Huntsville travelers love, just check the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area allows leashed dogs on most trails, including portions of the John Muir Trail and the trails around Bandy Creek Campground, which is unusually generous for a national park unit. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, about 45 minutes west, is also leash-friendly. Pack a tick check routine into your evenings, since the wooded hollows around Huntsville are prime tick habitat from April through October.
nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Huntsville?
Yes, RV delivery Huntsville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip the driving. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Bandy Creek Campground, the Brimstone Recreation cabin area, or a private driveway in Oneida or Winfield. They will level the rig, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on the listing page to see hosts offering this service, then message them about your exact destination. It is the easiest way to enjoy RV camping Huntsville without ever sitting behind a big steering wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntsville%2C%20TennesseeHow far can I drive on my RV rental from Huntsville?
Plenty far to make your Huntsville RV trip memorable. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. From Huntsville you can reach Big South Fork's Bandy Creek area in about 30 minutes (20 miles), Knoxville in roughly 1 hour 15 minutes (60 miles), Great Smoky Mountains National Park in about 2 hours 30 minutes (130 miles), Nashville in 3 hours (170 miles), and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky in just over 2 hours (110 miles). Filter listings by mileage included and message the host if you are planning a longer loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntsville%2C%20TennesseeWhere are the best campgrounds near Huntsville, TN?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Huntsville start with Bandy Creek Campground inside Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, which offers RV sites with water and electric hookups, modern bathhouses, a dump station, and a swimming pool, and accommodates most rig sizes. Station Camp Horse Camp is great if you are combining RV camping with horseback riding. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, about 45 minutes west, offers lakeside electric sites in a quieter setting. Brimstone Recreation also has hookup sites if you are there for the ATV trails. Reserve Bandy Creek through Recreation.gov up to six months ahead for summer weekends and October leaf peeping.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Huntsville?
April through early November is peak season for RV camping Huntsville, with two standout windows. Spring (mid-April to late May) brings 65 to 78 degree days, blooming dogwoods, and full-flowing waterfalls at Honey Creek and Twin Arches. Fall (early October to early November) is the local favorite, with crisp 55 to 72 degree days and brilliant Cumberland Plateau foliage. Summers run warm and humid, typically 80 to 90 degrees, but the river gorges stay cool. Winters are mild but quieter, with daytime highs in the 30s and 40s and occasional snow, so some campground loops close, though Bandy Creek stays open year-round. Book the third weekend in October early, leaf peepers fill the park fast.
weather.gov/mrx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Huntsville?
You will be just fine, and Huntsville is one of the friendlier places for first time renting an RV. Roads like US-27 and TN-63 are wide and lightly trafficked compared to big-city highways, and your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering brakes, mirrors, tank levels, the generator, and backing up. If you are nervous about TN-297's twists into Big South Fork, ask your host about delivery so the rig is waiting for you at the campground. You can also message hosts before booking to ask questions about the vehicle. Most first-timers tell us the orientation alone made them feel confident by the time they pulled away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I break down on a remote road near Big South Fork?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Leatherwood Road, a dead battery at Bandy Creek, or a tow off TN-297 is one phone call away. Cell service can be spotty deep inside Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, so save the roadside number in your phone and screenshot it before you head out. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need help reaching your host. The Bandy Creek Visitor Center has a landline and rangers who can radio for help if you cannot get a signal.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Huntsville RV rental into Kentucky or other states?
Yes, multi-state travel is one of the joys of an RV road trip from Huntsville. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, and Kentucky is right next door, with Big South Fork actually straddling the state line. Popular routes include heading north to Lake Cumberland (about 1 hour 30 minutes), east to the Great Smoky Mountains (about 2 hours 30 minutes), or south to Chattanooga (about 2 hours 45 minutes). Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limits. Crossing into Canada may be allowed by some hosts, so message them directly from the listing if that is your plan. Always confirm your route with the host before booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Huntsville RV trip?
Fuel is one of the most predictable parts of your budget. Tennessee gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Huntsville-area stations along US-27 are convenient stops. Expect a Class C motorhome to deliver around 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan rental Huntsville option to get 16 to 20 mpg, and a tow setup (truck plus travel trailer) about 10 to 13 mpg. For a typical 3-night trip with 200 to 300 miles of driving, budget roughly $80 to $180 in fuel for most rigs. Fill up in Huntsville or Oneida before heading into Big South Fork, stations inside the park are nonexistent and the nearest pumps in Jamestown are about 40 minutes away.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Huntsville?
For Bandy Creek Campground inside Big South Fork, book six months out through Recreation.gov, that is the rolling reservation window, and summer weekends plus October leaf-peeping dates fill within hours of release. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park reservations open up to a year ahead through Tennessee State Parks. Private parks and Brimstone Recreation typically need two to four weeks notice for peak weekends and just a few days in shoulder season. Midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often have last-minute availability even in October, and pairing a midweek campground stay with RV delivery Huntsville hosts can rescue a spontaneous trip.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064What are the local roads like for driving a motorhome around Huntsville?
Generally great, with one heads-up. US-27, the main artery through Huntsville, is a wide four-lane highway that is easy in any rig. TN-63 east toward Brimstone Recreation is a comfortable two-lane road. The one to know is TN-297 west into Big South Fork, which descends into the river gorge with steep grades and tight switchbacks that can be challenging in motorhomes over 30 feet or rigs towing trailers. If your rental is large, take the longer northern route via TN-154 to Bandy Creek instead. Watch for fog in the hollows on early mornings and occasional winter ice on bridge decks. Your host will flag any vehicle-specific road tips at pickup.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Huntsville?
Plenty to make life easy. Bandy Creek Campground offers water and electric hookups (no sewer at site), a centralized dump station, free hot showers, flush toilets, a swimming pool, and a camp store with firewood and ice. Many private parks in the Huntsville and Oneida area provide full hookups including sewer, plus laundry. Pickett State Park provides electric hookups and a dump station. Most local campgrounds have potable water fill stations at the entrance or dump area. Cell service is spotty inside Big South Fork, so download maps and entertainment before you arrive. Bring a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter just in case, Bandy Creek sites are mostly 30-amp.
nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/bandy-creek-campground.htmWhat is typically included inside an RVezy rental in Huntsville?
More than you would think. A standard motorhome rental Huntsville on RVezy comes with sleeping for 4 to 8 (depending on size), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (AC and furnace), a dinette, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a generator for boondocking, a TV, and an outdoor awning. WiFi is hit-or-miss on the Cumberland Plateau regardless of the rig, so plan for offline entertainment. Each listing spells out exactly what is included, from linens and pots to camp chairs and outdoor mats. Message the host if you want to confirm specifics like a coffee maker or kid-friendly bedding.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntsville%2C%20TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Huntsville offer some genuinely useful add-ons: bedding and linen packages ($25 to $60), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators ($25 to $50 per day), bike racks, kayak racks, and pre-stocked firewood. Pickup is typically at the host's location in or near Huntsville, Oneida, or Winfield, and many hosts offer delivery for a flat fee or per-mile rate, perfect for a family RV trip Huntsville parents want stress-free. Mileage policies vary: many include 100 miles per day free, with extra miles at roughly $0.30 to $0.45 each, and some offer unlimited mileage packages. Filter listings by Instant Book if you want to skip the approval wait and confirm immediately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntsville%2C%20TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, and your funds are held safely until your trip begins, so you never hand cash to a host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the rig was returned clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels. To avoid hold-ups, do a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off. Keep gas and dump-station receipts from stops in Oneida or Jamestown, they make the wrap-up paperwork quick and easy.
