Campgrounds near Jamestown, Tennessee
Jamestown sits on the Cumberland Plateau in Fentress County, Tennessee, roughly 90 minutes northwest of Knoxville. The town is the western gateway to Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service that encompasses approximately 125,000 acres of rocky gorges and forested plateaus, where numerous pristine streams unite with the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park lies within the 20,887-acre Pickett State Forest and adjacent to Big South Fork, about 15 miles north of town.
RV travelers have several bases within a short drive. Private options close to town include Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins and Laurel Creek Campground, both convenient for travelers who want hookups near shops and services. Spruce Creek Campground and Stables, East Fork Stables, and True West Campground Stables & Mercantile cater to visitors bringing horses or planning to ride the plateau trail system.
The area works well for families balancing developed amenities with backcountry access. Jamestown has full services, and the plateau setting keeps summer nights cooler than lower elevations in Tennessee.
Things to do near Jamestown
Hiking and sightseeing are the main draws. Big South Fork protects miles of scenic gorges, sandstone bluffs, natural arches, and rock shelters, with a large trail network reaching short paths to overlooks and longer backcountry routes. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park adds unique sandstone formations including natural bridges and rock shelters, Dark Sky night viewing, paddling on Arch Lake, and the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum.
Numerous trails snake through the Recreation Area, offering mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding for visitors, which is why Spruce Creek Campground and Stables, East Fork Stables, and True West Campground Stables & Mercantile cluster in this area. The main river of the Big South Fork offers fishing opportunities, and a Tennessee or Kentucky fishing license is required.
Located just under 20 miles from Bandy Creek is the Blue Heron Mine, a historic abandoned mining town rebuilt as an outdoor museum with audio presentations from people who lived in the community in the 1950s, reachable as a day trip along with the Big South Fork Scenic Railway on the Kentucky side.

Spring and fall are the busiest weekends at Big South Fork, and popular sites fill early. Bandy Creek Campground is open year-round, campsites are on the reservation system year-round, and sites not reserved may be obtained on a first-come, first-served basis. The Bandy Creek Group Camp typically operates on a shorter season during the warmer months.
Each season brings its own weather patterns: summers are generally hot and humid with highs sometimes eclipsing 90 degrees, winter lows often dip below freezing, and spring sees the most precipitation. February is the month with the most snowfall in Jamestown, with snow falling roughly 6.8 days and accumulating about 3.94 inches. The Bandy Creek Swimming Pool is open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day.
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park's Campground will be closed from May 26, 2025, to mid-2026 for renovations to the bathhouse and campground. Pickett's cabins remain available, but RV travelers should confirm campground status before routing through Pickett.
How to book
Bandy Creek Campground has 149 sites spread among five loops and two group camps, and reservations can be made by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov up to six months in advance. Group camp reservations can be made up to one year in advance. Backcountry camping in Big South Fork is allowed in designated areas and requires a permit through the Bandy Creek Visitor Center.
Pickett CCC Memorial State Park and other Tennessee State Parks use reserve.tnstateparks.com, and campsites or cabins can be booked up to a year in advance, or by phone at 1-888-867-2757.
Private campgrounds around Jamestown, including Maple Hill RV Park and Cabins, Laurel Creek Campground, and the horse-friendly properties, take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. For spring and fall weekends, book several weeks out and watch Recreation.gov for cancellations if park sites are full.
What to expect on arrival
The plateau sits above 1,500 feet, so temperatures run cooler than the Tennessee valleys and afternoon storms are common in summer. The Highway 297 approach to Bandy Creek from Oneida includes a 13 percent downhill grade and winding curves as it descends into the gorge, and can be especially challenging for large vehicles, RVs, and those towing trailers; an alternate route via Highway 154 to Bandy Creek Road is available.
Bandy Creek has 96 sites with water and electric hookups (including ten 50-amp sites), 49 tent-only sites, and two group areas, with flush toilets, hot showers year-round, and a dump station. Most frontcountry sites do not have full sewer hookups. Confirm RV length limits before booking.
Black bears and other wildlife frequent this campground, and food to a bear includes any scented item regardless of packaging. A firewood ban is in effect for the park; only firewood from Scott, Morgan, Pickett, and Fentress counties in Tennessee, and McCreary in Kentucky, can be brought in, and firewood is also for sale on site.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jamestown%2C%20TennesseeDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Jamestown, Tennessee?
You are all set with a regular driver's license. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for any RV available on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Approved renters are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. First time renting an RV? Message the host before booking and they will walk you through what to expect on pickup day.

Every RV rental in Jamestown booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore Big South Fork knowing help is just a phone call away. Protection plans cover most physical damage to the vehicle and give real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip (basic, standard, or premium), and the choice is yours, not the host's. Lock in your dates with confidence and focus on planning your Cumberland Plateau adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Jamestown RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, including a grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without second-guessing. Because RVezy (not individual hosts) manages the cancellation policy, you get consistent treatment no matter which Jamestown listing you choose. If a host ever needs to cancel, RVezy refunds guests or provides travel credits. You can review the full details during checkout or anytime in the Help Center. Pro tip: book early to secure the best rigs for peak fall-foliage weekends in October, when the Cumberland Plateau turns brilliant red and gold.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Jamestown?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Jamestown listings welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) when you filter by 'Pet-Friendly' on RVezy. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is one of the most dog-welcoming national park units in the country, allowing leashed dogs on nearly every trail, including the popular Angel Falls Overlook and Twin Arches Loop. Bandy Creek Campground and Pickett CCC Memorial State Park also allow leashed pets at campsites. Pro tip: message the host about pet fees (usually $25 to $75 per stay) and bring a tie-out stake, because shaded campsites under the hardwoods are perfect for letting your dog relax between hikes.
nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Jamestown?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to camp. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Jamestown to popular spots like Bandy Creek Campground, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park, and True West Campground & Stables. The host drives the rig in, levels it, hooks up water and power, and walks you through every switch and system before handing over the keys. You just show up with your cooler and clothes. Delivery fees are typically $2 to $4 per mile round trip, and some hosts offer free delivery within 20 miles of Jamestown. Filter listings by 'Delivery' on RVezy to see who delivers to your campsite, and you've essentially booked a fully set-up cabin on wheels.
tnstateparks.com/parks/pickettHow far can I drive on my Jamestown RV trip?
You will have plenty of range to explore. Most Jamestown hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some offer unlimited mileage on weekly bookings. From Jamestown, Bandy Creek is about 15 miles, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park about 12 miles, Dale Hollow Lake about 35 miles, Cumberland Falls State Park in Kentucky about 60 miles, and Nashville about 130 miles. A classic RV road trip from Jamestown loops north into Kentucky's Daniel Boone National Forest then back through Crossville and the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, roughly 200 miles total. Pro tip: if you are planning bigger distances, message the host before booking to discuss an unlimited-mileage rate.
nps.gov/biso/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Jamestown, TN?
You are spoiled for choice. The top pick is Bandy Creek Campground inside Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, with around 145 sites, full bathhouses, and direct access to over 150 miles of trails. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park (about 12 miles from town) has RV sites with 30/50 amp hookups and a swimming lake. Maple Hill RV Park sits right in Jamestown for convenient water, electric, and sewer hookups, while True West Campground & Stables on Leatherwood Ford Road is a favorite for equestrian families. Pro tip: Bandy Creek books up fast for fall weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates are set on Recreation.gov.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074When is the best time of year for a Jamestown RV trip?
Mid-April through early November is the sweet spot, but Jamestown is a true four-season destination. Spring (April to May) brings 65 to 75°F days and wildflowers across the Big South Fork gorges. Summer (June to August) runs warm and humid with highs around 85°F, perfect for swimming at the Blue Hole on Clear Fork River. Fall is the local favorite: October delivers crisp 60 to 70°F days and spectacular foliage across the Cumberland Plateau. Winter campers still find Bandy Creek open year-round, with quiet trails and occasional snow. Pro tip: mid- to late October usually hits peak color, so book your RV camping Jamestown trip 2 to 3 months ahead.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Jamestown?
You've got this, and Jamestown is one of the friendliest places to learn. Highway 127 and Highway 154 (the road to Pickett State Park) are wide, low-traffic, gently curving routes that are perfect for first-time RV drivers. Every RVezy host gives you an in-person orientation at pickup, showing you how to drive, level, hook up, and dump the rig before you leave the driveway. If you're nervous, book a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Jamestown, which both drive like a large van. Pro tip: ask your host for delivery to your campsite, then you only need to drive on day trips to nearby attractions like the Sgt. Alvin C. York Historic Site, just 8 miles north in Pall Mall.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Jamestown?
You are covered around the clock. Every motorhome rental in Jamestown booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Leatherwood Ford Road or a dead battery at Pickett State Park is just a phone call away from help. The roadside team coordinates towing, tire service, jump starts, lockouts, and mechanical dispatch. Your host is also a quick text away through the RVezy app and usually knows local mechanics. Pro tip: cell service inside Big South Fork can be spotty, so screenshot the RVezy support number and your host's contact info before you head into the gorge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips I can take from Jamestown?
Jamestown sits in a sweet spot for short, scenic loops. Drive about 60 miles north into Kentucky to Cumberland Falls State Resort Park (the Niagara of the South) and catch the famous moonbow on a clear full-moon night. Head east toward the Great Smoky Mountains foothills via Oneida and Wartburg, passing Frozen Head State Park. Loop about 130 miles southwest to Nashville for a city-meets-country combo. Or take a roughly 90-mile run south to Fall Creek Falls State Park, home to one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi at 256 feet. Cross-border travel into Kentucky and other U.S. states is permitted on RVezy. Pro tip: Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but the entire eastern U.S. is on the table.
tnstateparks.com/parks/fall-creek-fallsHow much should I budget for fuel on my Jamestown RV trip?
Fuel is usually less than people expect. Tennessee gas prices typically run $0.20 to $0.40 below the national average, and Jamestown stations along Highway 127 are convenient and easy to pull into. Realistic RV fuel economy: campervans 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 9 to 12 mpg, Class A 7 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer 10 to 14 mpg. For a typical 3-day, 200-mile loop around Big South Fork in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $110 in gas. Pro tip: fill up in Jamestown or Crossville before heading into the park, because the nearest fuel inside the recreation area is limited and pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Jamestown?
Plan ahead and you'll lock in the best spots. Bandy Creek Campground inside Big South Fork takes reservations on Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance, and prime weekends from May through October sell out the day they open. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park uses the official Tennessee State Parks reservation system and books 12 months out for weekends. Private parks like Maple Hill RV Park and True West Campground & Stables often have more flexibility, even within a few weeks of arrival. Pro tip: if you can't get into Bandy Creek for a Saturday, book Pickett State Park instead. It's only 15 miles away, less crowded, and the swimming lake is a hidden gem.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are local driving conditions like around Jamestown?
Driving around Jamestown is refreshingly easy. Highway 127 (the main north-south route) is well-paved and gently rolling, and most state routes to campgrounds have wide shoulders. The roads down into the Big South Fork gorge (like Leatherwood Ford Road) are steep and winding, with 7 to 10 percent grades, so use lower gears and take it slow in a larger motorhome. Watch for occasional wildlife (deer especially at dusk) and brief afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Winter brings rare snow and ice, mostly January and February. Pro tip: if you're driving a Class A, stick to Highway 154 to reach Pickett State Park rather than the narrower back roads, and you'll have a stress-free ride.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Jamestown?
You'll find a great mix. Maple Hill RV Park and Big South Fork RV Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi. Bandy Creek Campground has water and electric at every site, with a centrally located dump station and potable water fill, plus hot showers and flush toilets. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park provides water and 30/50 amp electric with a shared dump station. True West Campground & Stables has full hookups and horse stalls if you're bringing equine friends. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank in Jamestown before heading deep into the park, and always know where the nearest dump station is. Bandy Creek's is open year-round and free for registered campers.
nps.gov/biso/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Jamestown?
More than you'd think. Most Jamestown RVs come fully stocked with real beds (queens are standard, with bunks in family rigs), a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, coffee maker), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (roof AC plus propane furnace, important for chilly Cumberland Plateau nights), and seatbelts for safe travel. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, awnings, and onboard generators for boondocking. Wi-Fi varies, so don't count on streaming in the gorge. Pro tip: when comparing listings, check the 'Sleeps' count and look for hosts who include camping chairs, a propane grill, and starter kitchen kits. It saves a Walmart run and lets your Jamestown RV trip start the moment you arrive.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Jamestown rental?
Plenty of ways to customize. Popular Jamestown host add-ons include bedding/linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and tables ($10 to $30), bikes or kayaks ($25 to $50 per day), portable generators ($30 to $60 per day), and Starlink Wi-Fi on some premium rigs. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Jamestown, Allardt, or nearby Pall Mall between 1 and 4 p.m., with dropoff by 11 a.m. Many hosts offer paid late returns and free or low-cost delivery to local campgrounds. Pro tip: bundle delivery + setup + linens for a near-zero-effort weekend, and just bring food, clothes, and your sense of adventure.
tn.gov/revenue.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card. Never pay a host directly, that is the easiest way to keep your booking protected. Most hosts set a refundable security deposit that is authorized (not charged) on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the RV is returned clean, on time, and in good shape. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. Your protection plan handles most accidental damage, so the deposit covers smaller items like extra cleaning or missing equipment. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and dropoff for stress-free documentation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Jamestown during winter?
Yes, and winter is a hidden gem on the Cumberland Plateau. Many Jamestown hosts rent year-round, and Bandy Creek Campground stays open all winter with electric hookups (campground water systems are typically winterized in the coldest months, but a centralized fill station remains accessible). Daytime temperatures average 40 to 50°F from December through February, with crisp, sunny hikes and occasional frozen waterfalls at places like Northrup Falls in Colditz Cove. Look for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace, then ask the host about shore-power heaters and extra propane tanks. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery and full winter setup to skip the cold-weather hookup learning curve and enjoy a cozy Big South Fork weekend.
