Camping near Mowbray Mountain, Tennessee
Mowbray Mountain is a census-designated place in Hamilton County, Tennessee, sitting on the Cumberland Plateau roughly a half-hour drive north of Chattanooga. The area is known for sandstone climbing, hiking trails, and creeks that offer relief from Southeast Tennessee summer heat. Elevation on the mountain is about 1,660 feet, so nights tend to run a few degrees cooler than the valley below.
RV renters using Mowbray Mountain as a base have a mix of state park and private campgrounds within easy driving distance. Harrison Bay State Park sits on Chickamauga Lake to the south and is the largest option in the area, with water and electric hookups. Skull Island Campground and R and R RV Campground offer waterfront and river-adjacent sites, while Mountain Glen RV Park and Campground and Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA Journey cover the private, amenity-heavy end of the spectrum.
Most renters split time between the mountain itself and Chickamauga Lake, with downtown Chattanooga close enough for a day trip.
Things to do around Mowbray Mountain
The mountain is best known for climbing and hiking. Sandstone routes, sections of the Cumberland Trail, and creek access are the main draws, with the winding drive up the mountain road offering views on its own. Trailheads connect to miles of rugged terrain, and North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Park is roughly ten minutes away and features a swimming blue hole.
On the water, Chickamauga Lake supports fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. Harrison Bay provides marina access, multiple boat ramps, and the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay championship golf course on site.
Families with kids typically mix a lake day at Harrison Bay with a shorter hike on Mowbray, then head into downtown Chattanooga (about twenty to thirty minutes) for the aquarium and riverfront.

The shoulder seasons, spring and fall, are the most comfortable windows for RV trips in this part of Tennessee. Daytime highs sit in the 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and the hardwoods on the plateau color up through October and into early November. Peak season at Harrison Bay State Park runs April through October, when the camp store is staffed.
Summer brings hot, humid afternoons and frequent thunderstorms, but it is also when lake activity peaks. Weekends fill early: summer weekends fill all loops at Harrison Bay, and waterfront sites in Loop A can book out months ahead. Book several weeks out for any Friday or Saturday between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Winter is quiet and cool rather than harsh. Harrison Bay is open year-round for RV camping, and shoulder-season visits in spring or fall tend to ease the crowding without sacrificing lake access. Some private parks reduce services in the coldest months, so confirm hookups before booking December through February.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

How to book a campground near Mowbray Mountain
State park sites use the Tennessee State Parks reservation system. Reservations for Harrison Bay State Park can be made through that system online or by phone, and the campground offers RV sites across three loops plus a dedicated tent loop. Reservations are available up to one year in advance with a non-refundable booking fee. Maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights, extended to 28 nights from December 1 through February 28.
Booking in advance is recommended and can be completed online up to one year out; same-day reservations typically require a phone call to the park office.
Private campgrounds such as Chattanooga North / Cleveland KOA Journey, Mountain Glen RV Park and Campground, R and R RV Campground, and Skull Island Campground book directly through each operator's website or by phone. Holiday weekends fill first at every property in the area.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of water-and-electric pads and primitive tent areas at the state park, with fuller hookups at the private options. Harrison Bay has 128 RV sites with water and electric hookups plus 27 primitive tent-only sites across four loops, a centralized dump station, hot showers, and accommodates RVs up to 65 feet. The park also offers Wi-Fi intended for light use, a camp store during peak season, a playground, and fire rings, and pets are welcome on leash.
Site quality varies. Loop A has the most level sites and the best waterfront positions, Loop C puts some sites nearly at the water's edge, and Loop D is tent-only and shaded. Loops B and C have tighter turns that can be difficult for rigs over about 24 feet. Private campgrounds nearby lean toward pull-through pads, laundry, and pools. On the mountain itself, cellular coverage can be spotty, so download maps before heading up.
