Overview of campgrounds near Newport, TN
Newport sits in Cocke County in East Tennessee, at the northeast corner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and just off Interstate 40. The town works well as an RV base because it puts Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, the Cosby entrance to the national park, and the Pigeon River rafting outposts in Hartford all within a short drive, without the traffic of the tourist strip.
Campground options range from a full-service KOA to smaller family-run parks. Newport / I-40 / Smoky Mountains KOA Journey is the largest and best known, with pull-through RV sites, cabins, and tent sites just off the interstate. Mountain Ranch RV Park is a small full-hookup park geared to big rigs, Tana-See Campground sits near I-40 with a fishing pond and dog park, Triple Creek Campground is a creekside family park near the Cosby side of the Smokies, and Fox Fire Riverside Campground offers riverside sites in the same area.
Most private parks in the Newport area operate year-round or with an extended season, while national park campgrounds inside the Smokies run seasonally.
Things to do near Newport
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance at Cosby is roughly a half-hour drive and gives access to the Appalachian Trail, Hen Wallow Falls, and the trail up to Mount Cammerer. Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood sit about 40 to 50 minutes away for families that want a day of shops and attractions.
Whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River is the signature local activity. Outfitters in Hartford, about 15 minutes east of Newport off I-40, run the dam-controlled Upper Pigeon for Class III and IV rapids and a milder Lower Pigeon float suitable for younger kids.
Douglas Lake is close by for boating and fishing, the Cherokee National Forest borders the area to the north and east, and the Foothills Parkway offers a scenic drive with long ridge-line views. Triple Creek Campground and Fox Fire Riverside Campground put guests near creek and river frontage for tubing and trout fishing.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel around Newport. Wildflowers appear in the park through April and May, and Pigeon River outfitters begin non-guaranteed spring trips in April, with guaranteed dam releases starting the Tuesday four weeks before Memorial Day weekend.
Summer is the peak booking window. Guaranteed water releases on the Pigeon River run every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday through Labor Day, so weekday and Saturday sites in Hartford-area and Cosby-area campgrounds fill well in advance. Days are warm and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Cosby Campground inside the national park is typically open from mid-April through late October and takes reservations up to six months out on Recreation.gov.
Fall brings peak leaf color from mid-October into early November and heavy weekend demand. Winter is the quiet season: private parks like the Newport KOA stay open year-round with off-season extended stays, but the in-park campground at Cosby closes for the season, and cold snaps can bring freezing overnight temperatures.

How to book campgrounds near Newport
Private campgrounds around Newport are booked directly through each park's website or by phone. Newport / I-40 / Smoky Mountains KOA Journey uses the KOA reservation system, Tana-See Campground takes online and phone bookings, and Triple Creek Campground and Fox Fire Riverside Campground handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Mountain Ranch RV Park is a small operation best contacted directly for availability.
Cosby Campground inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park is reservation-only through Recreation.gov or 877-444-6777, bookable up to six months in advance. Stays are limited to 14 consecutive days at any one park campground.
For summer weekends and October leaf season, plan to book private and national park sites several months out; midweek stays outside peak windows are far easier to secure.
What to expect on the ground
Most private parks around Newport offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, and several of the newer small parks are set up for big rigs with level pads. The KOA has pull-through sites, a pool, laundry, and a dump station. Tana-See has a catch-and-release fishing pond and a dog park, while Triple Creek sits along creek frontage with shaded sites and a camp store.
Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, expect flush toilets and cold running water but no showers, no electric hookups, and no water at the site. RV length limits vary site by site at Cosby, with the longest RV sites accommodating rigs up to about 50 feet, and cell service is unreliable in the campground itself. A dump station sits near the campground entrance.
Bears are active throughout the region. Food, coolers, and scented items must be stored in a vehicle, and only heat-treated, certified firewood may be brought into the national park.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Newport, TN
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Newport, TN?
RV rental in Newport, TN is one of the more affordable basecamps for the Smokies compared to renting directly in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. On RVezy you'll typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches from $250 to $400 per night, plus fees. To find a cheap RV rental in Newport, book midweek, target shoulder months like April or early November, and filter by travel trailers a host can deliver. Pro tip: many Newport hosts price below Sevierville listings because they're 30 minutes outside the tourist core, so you save without losing access to the park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport,%20TennesseeDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Newport, TN?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Newport, TN. Tennessee does not require a commercial or special license for personal-use recreational vehicles, so your standard Class D license covers everything from a campervan to a 40-foot Class A motorhome. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork really is once they start the booking flow.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection or coverage is included with my Newport RV rental?
Every RV rental in Newport, TN booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the host's driveway. The protection plan helps cover most physical damage to the RV during your trip, which means you can drive Foothills Parkway or head into Cosby with confidence. You choose your level of coverage during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the plan that fits your comfort level and budget. Pro tip: pick a higher tier if it's your first time renting an RV in mountainous terrain.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Newport RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every rental. There's a money-back grace period after you book, and additional protections apply for qualifying situations outside your control. You won't see different cancellation rules listed on each Newport listing because it's a platform-wide policy handled by RVezy. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates for fall color season, then use the grace period to finalize your route through Cherokee National Forest with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Newport, TN?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Newport, TN is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of travel trailers, Class C motorhomes, and campervans where your dog is welcome. While dogs aren't allowed on most Great Smoky Mountains National Park trails, the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail are leash-friendly exceptions, and Cherokee National Forest just east of Newport has many dog-friendly hikes and forest roads. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you have a large breed, and ask about local off-leash parks and pet fees.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Newport?
Yes, RV delivery in Newport is one of the smartest moves for first-timers, and many local hosts offer it. They'll tow or drive the RV to your campground, set up the leveling jacks, hook up water, sewer and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you can skip driving a 30-foot rig down Interstate 40 or backing into a tight site. Delivery is popular to Newport / I-40 Smoky Mountains KOA, Great Smoky Mountain Vista Campground, and sites inside the park at Cosby Campground. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host to confirm your campground address and any delivery fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport,%20TennesseeHow many miles do I get, and is unlimited mileage available?
Mileage policies are set by each host, and you'll see the exact daily allowance and per-mile overage rate right on every Newport listing before you book. Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, and a growing number offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a big loop through the Smokies and Asheville. To put it in perspective: Newport to Gatlinburg and back is about 60 miles, Newport to Asheville round trip is about 80 miles, and Newport to Nashville and back is roughly 480 miles. Pro tip: filter by 'unlimited mileage' if you're planning an RV road trip from Newport across multiple states.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport,%20TennesseeWhat are the best campgrounds near Newport, TN for RV camping?
You've got a great mix of campgrounds within 20 minutes of downtown Newport. Newport / I-40 / Smoky Mountains KOA Journey is open year-round just off Exit 432, with long pull-thru sites, full hookups, and a pool. Triple Creek Campground sits on wooded acreage along creeks with full hookups and creek-side sites. Great Smoky Mountain Vista Campground offers panoramic mountain views. Mountain Ranch RV Park is a quiet small park with 50/30/20 amp full hookups suited to big rigs. Inside the national park, Cosby Campground (about 20 minutes south) offers a true forest experience with no hookups. Pro tip: reserve KOA or Cosby at least two to three months ahead for October leaf-peeping weekends.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232483When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Newport, TN?
Newport is a four-season RV destination, but the sweet spots are mid-April through June and September through late October. Spring brings 60 to 80°F days, blooming dogwoods, and full-flow waterfalls. Fall delivers the Smoky Mountains color show, peaking in mid to late October, with crisp 50 to 70°F days that are perfect for RV camping in Newport. Summer (July and August) is warm and humid with highs around 86°F and afternoon thunderstorms, so plan for shaded campsites and AC. Winter is mild compared to the north, with January overnight averages near freezing and only a few inches of snow per year at valley elevations. Pro tip: book fall foliage trips four to six months early.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Newport?
First time renting an RV? Newport is one of the friendlier places to start because most roads in and out of town are wide, well-maintained federal and state routes like Interstate 40 and US-321. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, the leveling system, slide-outs, water, propane and the generator, so you won't be left guessing. Stick to the lowland routes for your first day, save the curvier Foothills Parkway and Newfound Gap Road for after you've gained confidence, and remember that delivery is available if you'd rather skip driving entirely. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for the easiest handling on Smoky Mountain backroads.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Interstate 40, a dead battery at Cosby Campground, or a tow out of a tight forest road is just one phone call away. RVezy customer support is also reachable before, during and after your trip, and your host is typically a text away for quick questions about the specific RV. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway and snap photos of the RV at pickup so any small issues are documented from minute one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Newport, TN?
Newport is a launchpad for some of the South's most scenic RV road trips. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are about 30 to 40 miles away (roughly 45 minutes) for Dollywood and arcade-town fun. Asheville, NC is about 60 miles east on Interstate 40 for the Biltmore Estate and Blue Ridge Parkway access. Cherokee, NC sits about 75 miles south at the other end of Newfound Gap Road through the national park. Nashville is around 240 miles west, and Chattanooga is roughly 175 miles southwest. Cross-border travel between U.S. states is allowed on RVezy rentals; travel to Mexico is not permitted. Pro tip: a 5-day loop of Newport, Asheville, Cherokee and back is a great first big-mountain RV adventure.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Newport RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any motorhome rental in Newport, but East Tennessee gas prices typically run below the national average. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C, 12 to 18 for a travel trailer (depending on your tow vehicle), and 18 to 22 for a Class B campervan. Check current pump prices before you go using the EIA's weekly gasoline report, then estimate your loop. Pro tip: fill up at the larger truck stops near Exit 432 on Interstate 40 before heading into the mountains, where smaller-town stations near Gatlinburg often run higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Newport?
Booking ahead is the move, especially for the best campgrounds near Newport during peak season. For October fall color, reserve 4 to 6 months in advance at popular spots like Newport / I-40 KOA, Triple Creek Campground, and Cosby Campground inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cosby and other national park campgrounds book through Recreation.gov, and reservations open up to 6 months ahead on a rolling daily basis. For summer weekends, aim for 2 to 3 months out. Off-season (January through March) you can often grab sites a few days ahead. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, Tuesday through Thursday arrivals nearly always have availability, even at the most popular Smokies parks.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232483What are driving conditions like around Newport and the Smokies?
Newport itself sits in a wide valley with easy four-lane access via Interstate 40 and US-25/70, so getting in and out with an RV is straightforward. Where you'll want to slow down is on the mountain roads: Foothills Parkway has steep grades and tight curves, Newfound Gap Road (US-441) climbs to over 5,000 feet with sharp switchbacks, and the Cosby entrance road is narrow in spots. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can drop visibility quickly, and occasional winter ice closes the higher elevations of the park. RVs and trailers are prohibited on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Pro tip: check the park's road status page the morning of any drive over Newfound Gap, especially November through March.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htmWhat amenities do Newport-area campgrounds offer, and where can I dump or fill water?
You'll find a great range of hookups around Newport. Triple Creek, Newport / I-40 KOA, Great Smoky Mountain Vista, and Mountain Ranch RV Park all offer full hookups (50/30/20 amp electric, water, and sewer at the site), along with bathhouses, laundry, and Wi-Fi at most locations. Inside the national park, Cosby and Elkmont campgrounds have no hookups but do offer potable water fill stations and dump stations on site. If you need a public dump station between trips, the Newport / I-40 KOA typically sells day-use access. Pro tip: top off freshwater before heading into the park since backcountry and dispersed sites have none.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat features and amenities will my Newport RV rental have inside?
Newport rentals on RVezy come fully equipped so you can roll up and start camping. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class C, Class A, and travel trailer rentals, and AC plus furnace for year-round comfort. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Campervan rental Newport options (Class B) are more compact but still include a bed, kitchenette and often a wet bath. Generators are standard on most motorhomes for boondocking power. Pro tip: check each listing's photos and amenity list to confirm details like a roof-mounted solar panel or backup camera.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport,%20TennesseeWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect with a Newport RV rental?
Newport hosts offer a variety of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include camp chairs and outdoor tables, linens and kitchen kits, propane refills, generator hours, bike racks, fishing gear, and pet packages, typically priced from $10 to $75 each. Pickup is usually at the host's location around Newport or Cocke County, with delivery available for an extra fee (often a per-mile rate or a flat fee to popular campgrounds like Cosby or Greenbrier). Mileage policies and pet rules are also set per listing and shown clearly before booking. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a kitchen kit if it's your first time, and you'll arrive to a fully ready home base.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Newport,%20TennesseeHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, which covers the nightly rate, fees, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after your trip as long as the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your RV rental in Tennessee, do a careful walk-around with the host at pickup, photograph existing scratches, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: keep your receipts for fuel and dump fees in case any reconciliation comes up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park my RV overnight in and around Newport?
You've got plenty of legal, comfortable options for where to park an RV in Newport. The easiest is a reserved site at a local campground like Newport / I-40 KOA, Triple Creek, or Mountain Ranch RV Park, all within about 10 minutes of downtown. For one-night travel stops, some Walmart Supercenters and truck stops near Interstate 40 Exit 432/435 allow overnight RV parking with manager permission, so always call ahead to confirm. Inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, overnight parking is only allowed at designated campgrounds like Cosby. Family RV trip Newport plans go smoothest when you reserve a campground in advance, since street parking and city lots prohibit overnight stays.
