Campgrounds near Palmer, Tennessee
Palmer sits on the southern Cumberland Plateau in Grundy County, Tennessee, within short driving range of several units of South Cumberland State Park and the newer Savage Gulf State Park. The area lies atop one of the largest remaining forested plateaus in the eastern United States, and South Cumberland State Park spans 30,845 acres across four counties (Sequatchie, Franklin, Marion, and Grundy), managed as a single park with tracts clustered in the Savage Gulf, Fiery Gizzard, and Sherwood Forest units.
RV renters have a mix of options nearby. Foster Falls - South Cumberland State Park is the main drive-in campground inside the state park system, while private options include Greeter Falls Campground near the Savage Gulf trailheads, Bigfoot RV Park and Campground with hookup sites, and Big Mouth Cave Retreat. Camp Chet, on private forested land on Whitwell Mountain, rounds out the closer choices.
Foster Falls Campground is the only campground in South Cumberland State Park that allows vehicles, and it fits smaller RVs only; there are no spaces for large rigs. Renters bringing a larger motorhome or trailer should plan on a private park such as Bigfoot RV Park and Campground or Greeter Falls Campground for full or partial hookups.
Things to do near Palmer
The plateau is built around waterfalls, gorges, and sandstone cliffs. The park features waterfalls, cascading streams, rocky gorges, lush woodlands, and rock formations, with Foster Falls in Marion County being the tallest. The Fiery Gizzard backpacking trail and more than 90 miles of other trails run through the park.
Rock climbing is a major draw. Climbers can test their skills at the Stone Door, Denny Cove, and Foster Falls areas after registering online, and Foster Falls stands out as one of the most popular sport-climbing destinations in the South. Swimming holes and short waterfall hikes at Greeter Falls, Grundy Lakes, and Sycamore Falls give families lower-effort days between bigger outings.
Rock climbing requires advance online registration; at Denny Cove climbing is restricted to routes on the north cliff face, and caving at Buggytop Cave is only allowed June through August to protect bats from white-nose syndrome.

South Cumberland State Park is open year-round, but most visitors come in summer, when temperatures are typically in the low 80s, to use the swimming spots. Spring and fall bring cooler trail temperatures and migrating birds, while winter highs are typically in the mid to upper 40s. The plateau near Palmer sits between roughly 1,800 and 1,900 feet in elevation, creating a cooler microclimate that runs several degrees below surrounding lowlands, and morning fog often lifts by mid-morning in the gorges.
Summer weekends fill quickly at Foster Falls and at private RV parks close to Greeter Falls and Savage Gulf trailheads. Booking well ahead is the safer plan from Memorial Day through Labor Day and again through peak fall color in October.
Foster Falls has 26 rustic sites suited to tents or small trailers, is the only campground in the park where guests may park a vehicle next to the site, and it stays open year-round. Winter camping is quiet on the plateau but cold, wet, and sometimes icy, and I-24 over Monteagle Mountain occasionally closes in ice storms.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

What to expect on-site
Foster Falls Campground is open year-round, has 26 campsites in a forested area, accommodates tents, trailers, and small RVs, and provides drinking water, flush toilets, and hot showers. Gas generators are not allowed, and there are no water or electric hookups. Renters with a mid-size or larger motorhome should choose a private park instead.
Campfires must use heat-treated wood sold in the park or downed wood collected inside the park near the site, and bringing untreated wood into the park is prohibited. Quiet hours run from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am in all campgrounds.
The park is divided into three units (Savage Gulf, Fiery Gizzard, and Sherwood Forest) that are not connected, so guests will need to drive between them to reach every trailhead. Cell coverage is spotty in the gorges; download maps before leaving pavement.
