Campgrounds and RV parks near Red Boiling Springs, TN

The area is built around water recreation. Cordell Hull Lake stretches 72 miles upstream with 381 miles of shoreline, and anglers fish for white bass, rockfish, largemouth bass, catfish, shad, and crappie, while boating, sailing, water skiing, and jet skiing are all popular on the lake. Barren River Lake, a 10,000-acre reservoir just across the Kentucky line, adds more fishing, boating, and swimming options. On land, trails and small parks fill out an itinerary. The 6-mile Bearwaller Gap Trail begins within Defeated Creek Park and is open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and additional trails in the area include the Turkey Creek Nature Trail and Bear Wheels Trail. Barren River Lake State Resort Park adds a marina, boat ramp, playgrounds, and picnic shelters. The historic town of Granville is about 25 miles from Cordell Hull Lake and celebrates Heritage Day each May with a bluegrass festival and Civil War living history presentations.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall, and the Corps and state park campgrounds set the calendar. Defeated Creek Park is a seasonal Corps campground that typically opens in mid-March and operates into early November, covering spring, summer, and early fall. Barren River Lake State Resort Park follows a similar seasonal pattern, opening in late spring and running through mid-November. Kentucky State Parks note that they cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at their campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly if traveling during those months. Summer is peak season for lake use and family trips, with hot, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Waterfront sites at Cordell Hull book up quickly. Spring is the wettest time of year in Middle Tennessee, with May typically the rainiest month, and it is also the peak tornado season; Tennessee averages approximately 21 tornadoes per year, and while tornadoes can occur in any month, they tend to peak in the spring. Fall is the sweet spot for RV travelers who want cooler nights, thinner crowds, and foliage in the hardwoods around the lakes before campgrounds close in November.

Sites at the Corps campgrounds are generally spacious and shaded. Defeated Creek Park offers 155 sites for tents and RVs, all with electric hookups, plus two group day-use shelters with water and electric, a boat ramp, playground, swimming beach, and tennis and volleyball courts. A marina sits adjacent to the campground. Waterfront sites are the prize and are the first to book. Cell coverage is a common issue at the lakefront parks, and campers should not count on reliable data at Defeated Creek regardless of carrier. At Barren River Lake State Resort Park, several campers note significant leveling challenges, with pull-through sites sitting on hills that require careful positioning and back-in sites varying in grade, so leveling blocks are worth packing. Sites 1 through 9 offer full hookups, while the rest of the loops have water and electric only.
