Campgrounds near Sequatchie, Tennessee

Sequatchie sits on the southern Cumberland Plateau in Marion County, Tennessee, less than an hour northwest of Chattanooga. The area gives RV travelers quick access to waterfalls, sandstone bluffs, and the Tennessee River, with a mix of state park, private, and resort-style campgrounds within a short drive. South Cumberland State Park features one campground that can accommodate cars and small camping trailers, Foster Falls, along with four backcountry campgrounds: Father Adamz, Grundy Forest, Small Wilds and Little Cove. The park's units are spread across the plateau and are not connected, so drivers should plan on covering some distance between trailheads. Nearby private options fill the gaps for larger rigs and hookup sites. Hales Bar Marina and Resort sits on the Tennessee River, Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground and Lookout Mountain / Chattanooga West KOA Holiday cluster on the Chattanooga side of the plateau, and Camp Chet offers rustic sites on Whitwell Mountain.

Things to do near Sequatchie

Waterfalls and bluff-top hiking are the main draws. The trail to Foster Falls is a short out-and-back to the base, moderately steep in places, with rocky sections and a suspension bridge across the gorge. The Fiery Gizzard Trail, Denny Cove, and Castle Rock all lie within a short drive and are popular with hikers and rock climbers. The waterfall and its swimming hole are a short walk from camp, and the water runs coolest and most forceful in spring. By summer the falls may slow to a trickle, though the swimming hole remains popular in the heat. Raccoon Mountain Caverns adds guided cave tours, and Hales Bar Marina puts boaters, anglers, and paddlers on the Tennessee River. Chattanooga's aquarium, riverfront, and Lookout Mountain attractions are all under an hour from most Sequatchie-area campgrounds.

The Foster Falls campground is open year-round, but most visitors are drawn to the plateau in summer, when daytime temperatures are warm and creeks, swimming holes, and lakes are the main attraction. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures on the trails and comfortable hiking weather, while winter days are often mild with freezing overnight lows. Spring is the strongest season for waterfall flow and wildflowers on the plateau, and it is also among the wettest stretches on average. Summer weekends fill quickly at Foster Falls and at private parks near Chattanooga, so early booking is important. Fall brings hardwood color across the Cumberland Plateau from mid-October into early November and is generally the driest, most comfortable stretch for hiking. Foster Falls Campground is open year-round and is the only campground in South Cumberland State Park that allows vehicles including small RVs. Winter camping is possible but sites are primitive and overnight lows can drop below freezing.

We opted for delivery and setup to the campsite which was great! When we arrived everything was set up and ready for us to move in. It was great to escape the heat at the event and have lunch and dinner at the camper. They were awesome to work with! We highly recommend them for a rental option!! We would definitely choose them again!!

So glad I chose to rent an rv for the first time this weekend, as it rained 2 of 3 days and nights. Communication was smooth, even when a strange fluke occurred and I accidently got locked out. Matt immediately drove out to the site with a spare. It seemed to be a malfunction in the mechanism which I'm sure they will be addressing soon. The camper was clean, well equipped and simple to operate. The bed was comfy and I am particular. So , I was , a happy camper.

We enjoyed Drew’s camper very much for our Labor Day weekend trip to Chattanooga! Despite high temps in the 90’s and hitting 100 during the weekend, we even got cold at night from the air conditioning working so well. The camper was clean and looked bigger in person than the pictures. Lastly, even though we never actually got to meet Drew, he was attentive and responsive over messages when we had questions. We would absolutely stay in Drew’s camper again!

We rented this camper and couldn't have asked for a better experience. The camper itself was clean, comfortable, and clearly well maintained. Everything was in great working order, and it was obvious the host takes pride in keeping it ready for guests. The host was fantastic to work with from beginning to end. Communication was quick and friendly, and they were genuinely helpful throughout the entire process, from booking to pickup to return. Any questions we had were answered right away, which made everything smooth and stress free. Highly recommend both this camper and host, and we wouldn't hesitate to book again in the future!

How to book Sequatchie-area campgrounds

Tennessee state parks allow campsite reservations 12 months in advance through the central Tennessee State Parks reservation system, which covers Foster Falls and the park's backcountry sites. Advanced reservations are available prior to arrival, and may be made up to 1 year in advance. There is a non-refundable Advanced Reservation Fee per campsite that provides for managing the reservation system at Tennessee State Parks. Reservations can be made online or by phone. Private campgrounds such as Hales Bar Marina and Resort, Raccoon Mountain Caverns & Campground, Lookout Mountain / Chattanooga West KOA Holiday, and Camp Chet each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Peak summer weekends and fall color weekends fill first, so booking several weeks ahead is advisable for any RV site with hookups.

What to expect at Sequatchie campgrounds

Foster Falls is a rustic drive-in campground built for tents and smaller rigs. South Cumberland State Park's Foster Falls Campground sits within a forested loop of 26 drive-in sites, ranging from open, closely spaced spots near the entrance to more private, brush-buffered sites toward the outer edge of the loop. There are no water or electric hook-ups but a restroom and heated showers are available. No gas generators are allowed at the Foster Falls Campground. Foster Falls Campground works for small trailers and RVs, but nothing longer than about 25 feet. Larger motorhomes and trailers that need full hookups should look to the private campgrounds on the Chattanooga side of the plateau, where pull-through sites, sewer, and Wi-Fi are typically available.
