Campgrounds and RV parks near South Carthage, TN

South Carthage sits along the Cumberland River in Smith County, Middle Tennessee, roughly an hour east of Nashville. The town serves as a practical launch point for RV trips centered on Cordell Hull Lake, a 12,000-acre reservoir on the Cumberland River System managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The surrounding hill country, small marina towns, and lake shoreline shape most of the camping options within a short drive. The area's anchor public campground is Defeated Creek Marina Campground, a Corps of Engineers facility on Cordell Hull Lake, located about seven miles from Carthage. Additional RV-friendly options in the immediate area include Cumberland Valley RV Ranch, Made In The Shade RV Park, and TN40RV Campground, which provide hookup sites suited to travelers who want conveniences over federal-park austerity. For a state-park experience with lake views, Edgar Evins State Park sits on the shores of Center Hill Lake, about an hour east of Nashville and roughly 30 to 40 minutes south of South Carthage. Together, these properties cover the spectrum from primitive walk-in sites to hookup RV pads.

Federal and state campgrounds in this area use two separate reservation systems. Corps of Engineers sites at Defeated Creek Park are booked through Recreation.gov, and inventory releases on a rolling window that fills quickly for waterfront loops. Standard check-in is 3:00 PM and checkout is 2:00 PM, and sites typically offer 50-amp electric with water hookups. Edgar Evins State Park is reserved through the Tennessee State Parks system, with advanced reservations available up to one year prior to arrival. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per campsite, and most campsites require a minimum two-night stay. Private parks such as Cumberland Valley RV Ranch, Made In The Shade RV Park, and TN40RV Campground handle bookings directly by phone or through their own websites, and often have more flexibility for last-minute stays.
