Campgrounds near Spencer, Tennessee
Spencer sits on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau in Van Buren County, Middle Tennessee. It functions as the main gateway to Fall Creek Falls State Park, Tennessee's largest and most visited state park, encompassing more than 26,000 acres of hardwood forest, dramatic gorges, and cascading waterfalls including the iconic 256-foot Fall Creek Falls. RV travelers use Spencer as a base for waterfall hikes, plateau overlooks, and paddling on nearby rivers and lakes.
Options within a short drive range from full-service state park camping to private RV parks. Rock Island State Park offers RV camping across two campgrounds with 60 sites total, located at the convergence of three rivers on Center Hill Lake. Private options in the area include Horseshoe Bend Marina and Campgrounds, Mountain Glen RV Park and Campground, Camp Luna, and R and R RV Campground.
The region is rural, with services concentrated in Spencer, Sparta, and Pikeville. Cell coverage varies by carrier and terrain, and grocery runs generally require a short highway drive from most campgrounds.
Things to do near Spencer
Waterfalls anchor most itineraries. Fall Creek Falls itself drops 256 feet, and the surrounding park includes a lodge, cabins, an 18-hole golf course, and over 56 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Family-friendly stops include the Betty Dunn Nature Center, swimming pool, and short paved overlooks that work for younger kids.
At Rock Island State Park, visitors can see Great Falls, Twin Falls, the Blue Hole, the Cold Hole, and the Warm Hole. Paddlers and anglers use the Caney Fork and Collins River access points, and Center Hill Lake offers open water for boating and swimming. The park offers easy access to hiking trails, fishing, boating, swimming areas, and wildlife viewing.

At Rock Island, sites spread across hilly terrain, and larger rigs should confirm site length and levelness before booking. Bathhouses with hot showers and dump stations are available at both state parks. Cell service is inconsistent in gorges and low-lying loops, so download maps and reservations before leaving town.

Spencer's central Tennessee location makes for some incredible RV road trips. Top picks include Nashville for music and BBQ (about 95 miles west via I-40), Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain (about 75 miles south via Highway 111), Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 170 miles east), the Land Between the Lakes (about 190 miles northwest), and Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky (about 160 miles north). tnvacation.com/What's the gas situation like for an RV trip from Spencer?
Budget realistically and you'll be just fine. Tennessee gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average for regular unleaded, check AAA for current rates. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 8 mpg, and a tow vehicle with a travel trailer 10 to 13 mpg. For a 500-mile loop from Spencer (say, the Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain run), plan to budget a couple hundred dollars in fuel for a Class C. Spencer itself has a few gas stations on Highway 30 and Highway 111, but options thin out fast once you enter Fall Creek Falls State Park. Pro tip: top off in Spencer or Pikeville before heading into the park, there are no fuel stations inside the park.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=TNHow far in advance should I book a campground near Spencer?
Book early and you'll get the pick of the litter. Tennessee State Parks open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the official reserve.tnstateparks.com system, and Fall Creek Falls' premium full-hookup sites are snagged quickly for summer weekends and October leaf-peeping weekends. For shoulder-season weekday trips, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Rock Island State Park follows the same booking window. Pro tip: if Fall Creek Falls is fully booked, check daily around 8 AM, cancellations often show up in the morning, and book through the official Tennessee State Parks site to avoid third-party markups.
reserve.tnstateparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Spencer?
Driving around Spencer is mostly easy and scenic, with a few smart moves that make it even smoother. Highway 111 (the main north-south route) is a wide four-lane that handles any RV size comfortably, and Highway 30 east into Fall Creek Falls is a winding two-lane that's beautiful but requires attention near the switchbacks at the north park entrance, larger rigs should enter via the south side instead. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk along all rural roads, and check forecasts during spring (March-May) for severe thunderstorms and occasional tornado warnings. Winter snow is rare but icy bridges happen, drive cautiously after cold snaps. Pro tip: the climb up the plateau on Highway 111 north of Dunlap is steep, downshift early and use your engine brake.
smartway.tn.gov/trafficWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Spencer?
You'll find everything you need for comfortable RV camping Spencer style. Fall Creek Falls State Park offers 20/30/50-amp electric and water at its sites, with many adding full sewer connections, plus multiple dump stations, hot-shower bathhouses, and a camp store. Note: Tennessee rest areas do not provide RV dump stations, so plan to dump at your campground. Spencer-area RV rentals typically come with a queen or king bed, kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, full bathroom with shower, propane furnace, roof AC, and seatbelts for every passenger (always required on Tennessee roads). Most Class C and Class A motorhomes include a generator for off-grid power, perfect for non-electric sites near Fall Creek Falls. Many listings also include TVs, outdoor speakers, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots, though cell coverage on the Cumberland Plateau can be patchy. Family RV trip travelers should filter by Sleeps count to match group size. Pro tip: ask the host whether the awning, outdoor griddle, and camp chairs are included, many Spencer hosts include these for stays at Fall Creek Falls.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Spencer%2C%20TennesseeWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Spencer rental?
Spencer hosts offer plenty of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include linens and towel packages, kitchen kits with pots, pans and dishes, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, bike racks, generators with fuel, and pre-stocked firewood (remember, Tennessee State Parks require certified heat-treated firewood, you cannot bring outside firewood into the park). Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on for Fall Creek Falls renters, fees vary by distance from the host. Pickup and dropoff times are set by each host and shown on the listing. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering unlimited mileage and others including 100-150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a full propane tank, you'll arrive to a fully-functional RV without lifting a finger.
tnstateparks.com/about-us/firewoodHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanges with the host. The security deposit is a separate hold (not a charge) placed on your card before your trip starts and released after the RV is returned in the same condition, typically within a few days. Deposit amounts are set by each host and shown clearly on the listing before you book. To avoid any issues, take time-stamped photos and a quick video walk-around at both pickup and dropoff, return with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and empty the black and grey tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: ask the host about their dump-fee policy, some Spencer hosts include tank dumping in the base price.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Spencer outside a campground?
Plan to stay at a campground or RV park for overnight stops, Tennessee limits roadside RV sleeping. The Tennessee Department of Transportation enforces time limits at interstate rest areas and welcome centers (no overnight camping), and sleeping on state property outside designated camping areas is generally not permitted. The good news: legal overnight options around Spencer are abundant. Fall Creek Falls and Rock Island State Parks offer reservable RV sites year-round, and select Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along I-40 (closest about 35 miles north in Cookeville) often permit free overnight RV stays with manager approval. Pro tip: join Harvest Hosts to overnight at vineyards and farms across middle Tennessee for unique stops between Spencer and your next destination.
