Campgrounds near Sunbright, Tennessee
Sunbright sits in Morgan County on the Cumberland Plateau of East Tennessee, within easy driving distance of two major public lands: Frozen Head State Park to the south and the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area to the north. The town works as a practical base for RV trips built around hiking, horseback riding, paddling, and mountain biking in the northern Cumberlands.
Options close to town include Zenith Stables and Campground and Mountain View Camping for smaller private stays, plus Freedom Hills Campground for travelers who want a straightforward RV site. Frozen Head State Park offers rustic public sites in a rugged setting, and Big South Fork Lodge and Horse Campground caters to riders and RVers heading into the national river area.
The surrounding landscape is defined by steep ridges, sandstone gorges, and mixed hardwood forest. Frozen Head alone covers more than 24,000 acres, and the Big South Fork protects around 125,000 acres of gorges, bluffs, and river corridor across Tennessee and Kentucky.
Things to do near Sunbright
Hiking is the headline activity. Frozen Head has more than 50 miles of trails, including routes to panoramic overlooks and the historic Stonecipher-Kelly Homeplace, with peaks rising above 3,000 feet. Big South Fork adds long-distance trails, mountain-bike routes, and horseback riding, with the Blue Heron Mining Community rebuilt as an outdoor museum stop.
On the water, the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River is popular for whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. A Tennessee or Kentucky fishing license is required in the main river.
For families, Bandy Creek inside Big South Fork has a seasonal swimming pool open Fridays through Sundays and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, plus playgrounds, ball fields, and a camp store.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Sunbright. Both seasons deliver mild temperatures, wildflower blooms in the plateau forests, and colorful hardwoods in October and early November. Spring can be wet, and tornadoes across Tennessee tend to peak in the spring months, so weather-aware planning matters.
Summer is warm and humid, with reliable trail access and full amenity operation at the larger campgrounds. Thunderstorms are common, and July is among the wettest months on the plateau. Water-based activities on the Big South Fork peak in this window.
Winter is cool and damp, with occasional arctic outbreaks. The high peaks in the Frozen Head area are sometimes capped with snow or ice, which is where the name originates. Note that Frozen Head State Park is currently undergoing major renovations that have closed the Big Cove and Flat Fork campgrounds; check status before booking. Big South Fork campgrounds generally operate year-round, though services scale back off-season.

How to book campgrounds near Sunbright
Big South Fork campgrounds, including Bandy Creek, are reserved through Recreation.gov, with a booking window that typically opens up to six months ahead. Peak spring and fall weekends fill early, so book as far in advance as possible. Groups larger than 25 leaving established roads or parking areas need a special-use permit from the park.
Tennessee State Parks, including Frozen Head, use the state reservation system at reserve.tnstateparks.com or by phone. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, and reservations include a non-refundable advance reservation fee per campsite.
Private campgrounds in the Sunbright area, such as Zenith Stables and Campground, Mountain View Camping, and Freedom Hills Campground, are booked directly with the operator. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type when reserving.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Big Cove in Frozen Head are rustic: 20 frontcountry sites with a parking spur, table, grill, lantern hanger, and fire ring, plus backcountry and group options. No electricity, water hookups, or dump station are available at the park. The bridge into Big Cove has a five-ton weight limit, which rules out larger rigs. During the ongoing renovation, campers are directed to nearby parks such as Cumberland Mountain State Park and Big Ridge State Park.
Bandy Creek in Big South Fork is the largest and most developed area campground, with 181 sites including tent-only, water and electric loops, and group areas, plus a camp store, playgrounds, and volleyball. Travelers arriving via Highway 297 from Oneida should note a 13 percent downhill grade and winding curves descending into the gorge.
Only heat-treated or locally sourced firewood is allowed, and the same don't-move-firewood rule applies at Big South Fork. Buy local, burn on-site.

weather.gov/mrx/climateI have never driven an RV before, will I be okay around Sunbright?

Stick to Highway 27 and Highway 62 for your first miles, both are wide, well-maintained two-lanes with gentle grades. Westward, Nashville is about 165 miles via I-40, with the Natchez Trace Parkway beginning just south of the city. Cross-border trips into Kentucky just north are easy, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Confirm any border crossings with your host first.
tn.gov/tourism.htmlHow much will fuel cost for my Sunbright RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your budget, but it is easier to plan than you think. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 12 mpg, a Class B campervan 16 to 22 mpg, and a travel trailer pulled by a truck around 10 to 14 mpg. Tennessee gas prices typically run below the national average, and rural stations along Highway 27 near Sunbright are often the cheapest stops in the region. Fill up in Wartburg or Oneida rather than waiting until Knoxville. Pro tip: dropping from 70 mph to 60 to 62 mph on I-40 can meaningfully improve your fuel economy on longer drives.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Sunbright?
For the best campgrounds near Sunbright, aim to book 4 to 6 months ahead for summer and fall weekends. Big South Fork's Bandy Creek Campground and Pickett CCC Memorial State Park sites open on Recreation.gov and the Tennessee State Parks reservation site respectively, and both fill quickly for holiday weekends like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and peak October foliage. Weekdays and shoulder seasons (March, early April, November) often have same-week availability. Pro tip: set up an alert on Recreation.gov for Bandy Creek, cancellations release 2 to 3 weeks out and that's how locals snag prime riverside loops.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064What are driving conditions like around Sunbright?
Driving an RV around Sunbright is genuinely relaxed compared to most U.S. destinations. You're on the Cumberland Plateau, so expect rolling two-lane roads, occasional grades of 5 to 7 percent on Highway 27 descending toward the Emory River, and beautiful winding stretches near Frozen Head. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along Highway 62, and slow down through small towns like Wartburg and Lancing where speed limits drop to 30 mph. Winter ice on shaded Plateau curves is rare but possible December through February. Skip the narrow forest roads inside Big South Fork's backcountry in anything larger than a Class B, stick to paved campground access routes instead.
tn.gov/tdot/driver-how-do-i/check-current-road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Sunbright?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Bandy Creek Campground inside Big South Fork has 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park offers electric and water hookups at most sites plus a camp store and bathhouses. Private parks in the broader Jamestown and Caryville areas often add Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. For potable water fills and dump stations on the road, larger truck stops along I-40 near Crossville are reliable. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading deeper into the Plateau, rural fills get sparse past Jamestown.
