Campgrounds near Sweetwater, Tennessee
Sweetwater sits in Monroe County along Interstate 75 in East Tennessee, roughly halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga. The town is best known as the home of the Lost Sea, a wonder 140 feet below ground and the largest underground lake in America, located within Craighead Caverns. Its position on I-75 at Exit 62 makes it a common overnight stop for RV travelers routing between the Great Smoky Mountains, Nashville, and Atlanta.
RV options close to town include the Sweetwater / I-75 / Exit 62 KOA Holiday, Tennessee Country Campground and RV Park, and Over-Niter RV Park. A short drive south on I-75 puts travelers at Athens I-75 Campground, while Notchy Creek Campground offers access toward the Tellico River area. The Sweetwater KOA sits just off Interstate 75 and is a short drive from the Lost Sea, Sweetwater Valley Farms, and the town's antique district.
Beyond the interstate corridor, the region opens into the Cherokee National Forest and the shoreline of Watts Bar Lake, giving RV renters a mix of easy-in, easy-out commercial parks and public land options within an hour's drive.
Things to do near Sweetwater
The headline attraction is the Lost Sea Adventure. The tour is a three-quarter mile round-trip that lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes, following wide, sloping pathways through Craighead Caverns and ending with a glass-bottom boat ride on the underground lake. The cave maintains a cool, constant temperature of 58 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, so even on hot summer days a light jacket is advisable, which makes it a reliable rainy-day or hot-afternoon option for families.
West and south of town, the Tellico River region offers sightseeing, fishing, hiking, and water activities across the southern Cherokee National Forest, with connectors between the Cherohala Skyway and Tellico River Road. The Cherohala Skyway is a 43-mile National Scenic Byway that stretches from Tellico Plains, Tennessee, to Robbinsville, North Carolina, and Bald River Falls on Tellico River Road is a popular destination.
On the water, Watts Bar Lake draws visitors for boating, fishing, swimming, and shoreline camping.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Sweetwater. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable range for hiking and lake use, and traffic on the Cherohala Skyway and Tellico River Road is lighter than midsummer. Spring is a wet stretch and also the time when the Tellico River runs highest for whitewater paddling.
Summer is peak season on the interstate and at commercial parks near Exit 62. Heat and humidity are the norm, with a July heat index computed at a sweltering 100°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Sites near the Smokies, Watts Bar Lake, and Indian Boundary book well in advance, so travelers should reserve early for June through August.
Late fall through early spring brings closures on public land. Indian Boundary is normally open from mid April to the beginning of November, and other developed Cherokee National Forest campgrounds and swim areas follow similar seasons due to low visitation and freezing temperatures that can damage water systems. Several less-developed sites remain open year-round, and most private I-75 parks stay open through winter.

We had an amazing time renting this RV for our Great Smoky Mountains National Park trip! David and Teresa were incredibly friendly and welcoming from the very beginning. It was such a pleasure meeting and getting to know them. They took the time to give me a thorough walkthrough of the RV and clearly explained all of the systems, which made us feel comfortable and confident throughout our trip. Additionally, they created a manual that gives step-by-step illustrated instructions which was super helpful. They also made themselves readily available via call/text for any questions throughout our trip. The RV itself was in excellent condition, exceptionally clean, and had everything we needed and more. The layout was perfect for our group of five adults, providing plenty of space to relax, cook, play board games, watch movies, and sleep comfortably. This was such a fun adventure and a fantastic way to explore the area. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and would absolutely rent from David and Teresa again. Highly recommend!

This was our second time renting from David and Teresa! We will definitely be back again in the future.

How to book
Private RV parks near Sweetwater, including the Sweetwater / I-75 / Exit 62 KOA Holiday, Tennessee Country Campground and RV Park, Over-Niter RV Park, and Athens I-75 Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Interstate-adjacent sites often sell out on summer weekends and holidays, so RV renters should lock in dates several weeks ahead.
For public land, Cherokee National Forest campgrounds such as Indian Boundary use Recreation.gov. All sites at Indian Boundary are reservable, and reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance on a rolling window, so peak-season visitors should book the morning the window opens. Some Forest Service campsites are available on a first come, first served basis, and Recreation.gov customer service can also be reached by phone.
What to expect on the ground
Access is straightforward. Most private parks sit within a mile or two of I-75 exits, with pull-through sites and full hookups suited to larger rental rigs. The Sweetwater KOA is less than a mile off I-75 Exit 62, and posted signs should be followed because GPS routing is not always accurate in the area.
Size limits matter on public land. The Indian Boundary campground road is designed for vehicles up to 26 feet in length, and any damage caused by larger vehicles may result in a fine. Rental Class C and travel-trailer setups usually fit; larger Class A rigs should stick to commercial parks.
Bear country rules apply on Forest Service land. Food storage restrictions apply at all areas on the Cherokee National Forest, so all food and scented items must be stored in a hard-sided vehicle, camper, or approved bear-resistant container when not in use.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Sweetwater, TN?
RV rental in Sweetwater is one of the better-value options in East Tennessee thanks to its small-town location between Knoxville and Chattanooga. On RVezy, towable trailers near Sweetwater typically average around $125 to $150 per night, while motorhomes average roughly $200 to $275 per night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. Travel trailers and pop-ups are the most affordable RV rental Sweetwater options, while Class C motorhomes give families more comfort for longer road trips. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater,TennesseeDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sweetwater, TN?
You're in luck, a regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sweetwater, TN. Tennessee does not require a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational vehicles used for personal travel, so motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy are fair game with your everyday license. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before flying in, usually under $20, and you're set to cruise the Smoky Mountain foothills.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services/commercial-driver-license.htmlWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Sweetwater, TN?
Every RVezy booking in Sweetwater includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right in. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. It gives renters real peace of mind whether you are navigating I-75 traffic, parking at Sweetwater KOA Holiday, or heading up into the Cherokee National Forest. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking, picking a higher tier is an easy way to spend your Sweetwater RV trip focused on cave tours, not what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Sweetwater RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy has you covered with a cancellation policy that includes a money-back grace period right after booking. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy (not individual hosts), so you get the same fair structure regardless of which Sweetwater RV you choose. Factors like how many days before the trip you cancel and unforeseen events such as natural disasters are all considered. That means you can lock in your summer Lost Sea trip or a fall color drive through the Cherokee National Forest now and adjust later if life gets in the way. Pro tip: book early to get your pick of pet-friendly and delivery-ready rigs, the policy gives you room to commit with confidence.

Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Sweetwater options, just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter when you search on RVezy. Kefauver Park in downtown Sweetwater is also an easy leg-stretcher between drives. fs.usda.gov/cherokeeCan the RV be delivered and set up for me in Sweetwater?
Yes, RV delivery in Sweetwater is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Filter for Delivery on the search page to see local options and delivery fees. Pro tip: ask for delivery to your campsite if you are nervous about backing a 30-foot rig into a wooded site, you will save the stress and start your Sweetwater RV trip already set up.

The sweet spot for RV camping Sweetwater is April through early November, with two clear peaks. Spring (April to May) brings dogwood blooms, daytime highs in the 60s to 70s F, and uncrowded campgrounds. Fall (mid-October to early November) explodes with Smoky Mountain color and crisp 50 to 70 F days, ideal for scenic drives on the Cherohala Skyway. Summer is busy and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s F, but campground pools and the steady 58 F Lost Sea cave make it bearable. Winters are mild (40s F) and many local parks stay open year-round. Pro tip: book the third week of October for peak foliage along US-411 toward the Smokies.
weather.gov/mrx/I have never driven an RV before, what should I expect picking one up in Sweetwater?
First time renting an RV? You are going to be fine. Every RVezy host in Sweetwater provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, water and waste systems, the propane setup, slide-outs, and the awning. Sweetwater itself is a low-key launch pad: traffic is light, I-75 has wide lanes and easy on-ramps, and US-11 through downtown is gentle two-lane driving. Most renters take a short shake-down loop around Monroe County before heading to the campground. Pro tip: message your host beforehand with any questions, and consider a Class C or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they handle much like a large truck or van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. Sweetwater's location right on I-75 between Knoxville and Chattanooga means help is rarely far, and there are RV-friendly service shops in nearby Athens and Lenoir City. For mechanical questions, your host is your first call, they know their rig best and most respond fast through the RVezy app. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before pickup, and snap photos of the RV at handoff so everyone is on the same page.

Around Sweetwater, expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 16 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer. A typical 4-day loop to the Smokies (about 250 miles round trip) in a Class C runs roughly $90 to $130 in fuel at current TN prices. Private parks like Sweetwater KOA Holiday and Lotterdale Cove book directly on their websites. Stick to US-411 and the Foothills Parkway for an RV-friendly Smokies approach. Watch for fog in the river valleys at dawn and occasional summer thunderstorms. Pro tip: avoid I-75 northbound on Sunday afternoons when Knoxville-bound traffic backs up, leave by mid-morning or wait until after 7 p.m.

Potable water fill-ups and dump stations are easy to find at Sweetwater KOA and the Love's Travel Stop at I-75 exit 60. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a pressure regulator, water pressure at older East Tennessee parks can spike and damage RV plumbing.

Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a TV, generator, and outdoor awning, and many campervan rental Sweetwater options add solar panels for off-grid trips. Wi-Fi depends on cellular signal, which is good along I-75 but spotty deeper in the Cherokee National Forest. Pro tip: check the listing's sleep count and seatbelt count carefully, those are the two numbers that matter most for a family RV trip Sweetwater.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Sweetwater RV rentals?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and tables, generators, kayaks or bikes, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts also offer delivery and pickup at Sweetwater KOA Holiday, Lotterdale Cove, or your home address (fees usually scale with distance). Pickup at the host's location is typically free and includes a 30 to 60-minute orientation. Most one-way trips aren't standard, but message the host directly to ask, popular routes from Sweetwater include south to Chattanooga and north to Pigeon Forge. Pro tip: bundle a generator add-on if you plan to boondock along the Cherohala Skyway, you'll have AC and a microwave anywhere.
tn.gov/tourism.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy in Sweetwater?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. Most bookings collect a portion at booking and the balance closer to your trip date. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup; the amount is set by the host and shown on the listing. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition (no new damage, returned with the agreed-upon fuel and waste levels), the hold is released after drop-off. Pro tip: do a full walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff in Sweetwater, it is the easiest way to keep the deposit return smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Sweetwater RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, in most cases you can take your RV rental from Sweetwater across state lines throughout the continental US, popular routes include heading south to Georgia and the Atlanta area, north into Kentucky's bourbon country, or east into North Carolina for Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-state RV rental Tennessee loop, share your route with the host upfront so they can confirm the mileage policy and any cross-border paperwork is squared away.
