Campgrounds near Tellico Plains
Tellico Plains sits at the western edge of the Cherokee National Forest in Monroe County, Tennessee, at the Tennessee terminus of the Cherohala Skyway. The town is a common staging point for RV trips into the Tellico Ranger District, with the Tellico River, Bald River Falls, and Indian Boundary Lake all within a short drive. Elevation in town is around 866 feet, with nearby ridges climbing above 5,000 feet along the Skyway.
Campground options in the area fall into two broad groups. Private RV parks with hookups include Hunts Lodge Motorcycle Campground, Mecca Camp Resort, Top of the World RV, Hammer's Hideaway Campground, and Notchy Creek Campground, most catering to riders drawn by the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. National forest campgrounds along Tellico River Road and off the Skyway offer more primitive sites, generally without full hookups.
Renters should note that many forest sites accommodate rigs only up to about 26 feet, while private parks handle larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels.
Things to do near Tellico Plains
The Cherohala Skyway is the headline drive, a 43-mile National Scenic Byway climbing from Tellico Plains to Robbinsville, North Carolina, with overlooks above 5,000 feet. Bald River Falls, a waterfall on Tellico River Road (FS 210), is a short drive from town and reachable by RV up to the pull-off.
Indian Boundary Lake, a 96-acre lake off the Skyway, has a swim beach, fishing pier, boat ramp, and a 3.2-mile hiking and biking trail around the shore. The Tellico River is stocked with trout by the Tellico River Trout Hatchery.
Motorcyclists and sports-car drivers use Tellico Plains as a base for the Tail of the Dragon (US 129), roughly an hour north.

Peak season runs mid-April through early November, matching the operating window of most national forest campgrounds in the Tellico Ranger District. Indian Boundary Campground typically opens in mid-April and closes in early November, and smaller developed sites along Tellico River Road generally run from late spring through mid-fall. Summer weekends and October leaf-peeping weekends book out first.
Spring brings wildflowers, moderate temperatures often in the 70s, and higher water on the Tellico for fishing and paddling. Fall delivers peak color in mid-to-late October along the higher elevations of the Skyway.
Winter is quiet. Most developed campgrounds and their water systems are closed and winterized from late fall through mid-spring. The Cherohala Skyway stays open year-round but can see snow, ice, and temporary closures at the highest elevations, and the Tennessee side is not plowed as aggressively as the North Carolina side.
How to book campgrounds near Tellico Plains
Reservable Cherokee National Forest campgrounds, including Indian Boundary, are booked through Recreation.gov or by phone at 877-444-6777. Indian Boundary sites can be reserved up to six months in advance, and popular summer and October weekends fill early.
Many smaller forest campgrounds along Tellico River Road are first-come, first-served and do not accept reservations. Arriving on a Thursday improves the odds of securing a site for a weekend stay.
Private parks near Tellico Plains, including Hunts Lodge Motorcycle Campground, Mecca Camp Resort, Top of the World RV, Hammer's Hideaway Campground, and Notchy Creek Campground, book directly through the operator. For confirmation of open dates, the Tellico Ranger District office can be reached by phone.
What to expect on arrival
Access to Tellico Plains is via TN-68 and US-411. The route up Tellico River Road (FS 210) is paved for the initial miles to Bald River Falls, then transitions to gravel deeper into the forest. Many national forest campgrounds sit on gravel spurs that can be tight for long trailers and low-clearance motorhomes.
Cell service is limited to nonexistent once past the town limits and along most of the Cherohala Skyway. Plan on downloading maps in advance and fueling up in Tellico Plains, since there are no services along the 43-mile Skyway crossing.
Black bears are active in the area. Store food in a hard-sided vehicle or bear-resistant container, and use bear-resistant trash receptacles at forest campgrounds. Full hookups are found only at private parks; forest sites typically offer electric at best.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Tellico Plains, TN
How much does an RV rental in Tellico Plains cost?
RV rental in Tellico Plains is one of the more affordable mountain getaways in East Tennessee. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and campervans land between $125 and $200. Cheap RV rental in Tellico Plains is easiest to score in March, April, and November, when demand softens between peak leaf seasons. Book at least three to four weeks ahead for fall foliage weekends along the Cherohala Skyway, since rates climb every October. Pro tip: weekday pickups (Monday through Wednesday) often unlock lower nightly rates and longer-stay discounts from local hosts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tellico%20Plains,%20TennesseeWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Tellico Plains, TN?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Tellico Plains. Tennessee does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved renters are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to mail or notarize. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set to drive Highway 68 and TN-165 toward the Cherohala Skyway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Tellico Plains RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Tellico Plains booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. Protection plans cover most damages to the vehicle and give you real financial peace of mind on twisty mountain routes like TN-165 and Highway 360. RVezy offers different protection tiers, and you (not the host) choose the coverage level that fits your trip during checkout. That means whether you're heading up to Indian Boundary or out to Bald River Falls, you can drive knowing you're backed up. Pro tip: pick your protection level before the busy fall foliage rush so you can lock in your dates without delay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Tellico Plains RV trip?
Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Refund details depend on how far out you cancel and whether anything unexpected pops up, like a severe Cherokee National Forest storm or a road closure on the Cherohala Skyway. If life throws a curveball, RVezy's support team is reachable to help you sort options. Pro tip: book early for October leaf season in the Unicoi Mountains, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Tellico Plains?
Absolutely, plenty of pet owners bring dogs on a Tellico Plains RV trip. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see motorhomes and campervans that welcome four-legged co-pilots, then message the host if you want to confirm size or breed details. Once you're here, the Cherokee National Forest is dog heaven: leashed pups are welcome on the Bald River Falls trail, around Indian Boundary Lake's 3.2-mile loop, and along most Cherohala Skyway overlooks. Pet-friendly RV rental in Tellico Plains makes it easy to explore together. Pro tip: pack a tick comb, since the wooded Unicoi foothills are prime tick territory from April through September.
fs.usda.gov/recreation/cherokeeCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Tellico Plains?
Yes, RV delivery in Tellico Plains is a popular option, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig up Highway 68's mountain grades. Many local hosts will deliver to Indian Boundary Campground, Top of the World RV, or even a private cabin driveway, then set up the awning, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when you search, and message the host with your destination address for a quote. Pro tip: delivery makes a Cherohala Skyway base camp effortless, since you can park once and use a smaller vehicle to drive the 43-mile scenic byway.
fs.usda.gov/recreation/recarea/?recid=34835How far can I drive on my Tellico Plains RV trip?
You'll have plenty of range to explore. Each host sets their own mileage policy, and many Tellico Plains listings offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From your basecamp, Bald River Falls is just 15 miles up FR-210, the Cherohala Skyway runs 43 miles to Robbinsville NC, Great Smoky Mountains National Park's Cades Cove entrance is about 70 miles away, and Knoxville sits roughly 65 miles north. Check the listing's mileage details before booking, or simply message the host to talk through your route. Pro tip: a 300-mile cushion comfortably covers Skyway, Smokies, and a day in Knoxville.
tn.gov/tdot.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Tellico Plains?
You've got fantastic options right out the door. Indian Boundary Campground (about 15 miles up the Cherohala Skyway) is the local favorite, with 87 sites around a 96-acre lake and electric hookups at many sites. Top of the World RV on Highway 68 delivers full 30/50-amp hookups and big ridge views. Tellico Plains/Cherokee National Forest KOA Holiday adds full amenities, a pool, and cabins. For something rustic, Holly Flats and Spivey Cove in Cherokee National Forest offer creekside primitive camping. Pro tip: Indian Boundary books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve early through Recreation.gov.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233116When is the best time for RV camping in Tellico Plains?
The sweet spot is April through early November, with two standout windows. Mid-April to mid-June brings flame azalea blooms on Hooper Bald, lush green forests, and daytime highs of 65 to 80°F, perfect for hiking and tubing on the Tellico River. October is foliage gold along the Cherohala Skyway, with crisp 55 to 70°F days and brilliant reds and oranges peaking around mid-month. Summer (July to August) is warm at 80 to 90°F in town but 10 to 15°F cooler at the Skyway's 5,400-foot crest. Winter RV camping in Tellico Plains is possible at lower elevations, though the Skyway can ice over. Pro tip: book October dates by July, since leaf-season rentals sell out fast.
weather.gov/mrx/I've never driven an RV. Can I still rent one in Tellico Plains?
You'll feel ready by the time you pull out of the driveway. First time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy hosts are used to, and every booking includes a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and dumping. Many Tellico Plains hosts also offer delivery and setup so you can skip the driving learning curve entirely. The local roads are forgiving too: Highway 68 north toward Madisonville is wide and easy, ideal for getting your bearings before the curvier TN-165 climb. Pro tip: pick a travel trailer or Class C under 27 feet for your first Tellico Plains RV trip, since they handle Cherokee National Forest's narrower forest roads with ease.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down in the mountains around Tellico Plains?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a single phone call gets you help whether you're at a Cherohala Skyway overlook, deep on FR-210 near Bald River Falls, or back at your campsite. Roadside assistance covers towing, flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, and fuel delivery. Cell service is spotty between Tellico Plains and Robbinsville (about 43 miles of patchy coverage), so save the RVezy support number offline before you set out. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of mile markers along TN-165 when you stop at overlooks, so you can give an exact location if you need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Tellico Plains?
You're parked at a true road trip launchpad. The signature run is the Cherohala Skyway: 43 miles of National Scenic Byway from Tellico Plains to Robbinsville, NC, climbing to over 5,400 feet at Haw Knob. From there, an RV road trip from Tellico Plains can swing 70 miles into Great Smoky Mountains National Park's Cades Cove loop, head 90 miles to Asheville NC for the Blue Ridge Parkway, drop 75 miles south to the Ocoee River whitewater corridor, or head 65 miles north to downtown Knoxville. Crossing into North Carolina is allowed, but trips to Mexico aren't covered. Pro tip: drive the Skyway eastbound so you hit the visitor center first.
nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/cades-cove.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Tellico Plains RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most renters expect. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck get roughly 10 to 13 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 mpg, and campervans hit 16 to 20 mpg. Tennessee gas prices typically run 20 to 30 cents below the national average, and Tellico Plains has reliable fill-ups right in town on Highway 68 (the last stop before the Skyway, where there are zero services for 43 miles). For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $230 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Tellico Plains before every Skyway run, since the next pumps are in Robbinsville NC.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Tellico Plains?
Earlier is better, especially for the marquee spots. Indian Boundary Campground in Cherokee National Forest opens reservations six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and prime summer and October weekends fill within hours of release. Private parks like Top of the World RV and the Tellico Plains KOA generally book through their own websites and need 4 to 8 weeks of lead time for fall foliage season. For shoulder months (April, May, late September), you can often grab sites 1 to 2 weeks out. Pro tip: if Indian Boundary is sold out, check midweek arrivals or look at nearby Citico Creek and Holly Flats dispersed sites in the national forest.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233116What are local driving conditions like around Tellico Plains?
Driving here is scenic and very manageable with a little awareness. Highway 68 in and out of town is a wide four-lane, perfect for big rigs. TN-165 (the Cherohala Skyway) is a well-maintained two-lane that climbs from 900 feet to 5,400 feet over 25 miles, with steep grades and sweeping curves, so downshift on descents to spare your brakes. Cell service drops out along the Skyway and on Forest Road 210 to Bald River Falls. In winter, ice and occasional snow can close the upper Skyway. Pro tip: check the Cherokee National Forest road alerts page the morning of your Skyway drive, especially November through March, before heading up.
tn.gov/tdot/driver-how-do-i/check-current-road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Tellico Plains?
You'll find a great mix depending on where you stay. Private parks like Top of the World RV and Cherokee National Forest KOA Holiday offer 30/50-amp full hookups, sewer, water, Wi-Fi, laundry, and on-site dump stations. Indian Boundary has electric sites, drinking water spigots, flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station, and a swimming beach on the 96-acre lake. Cherokee National Forest's smaller campgrounds (Holly Flats, Spivey Cove, Big Oak Cove) are primitive: vault toilets, no hookups, and bear-aware food storage required. For dump and freshwater fill between trips, the Indian Boundary dump station is the go-to. Pro tip: bring a 50-foot freshwater hose, since some forest spigots sit far from sites.
fs.usda.gov/recreation/recarea/?recid=34843What's included inside a typical Tellico Plains RV rental?
You're getting a fully equipped basecamp. Most motorhome rentals in Tellico Plains come with a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunks (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a TV. Campervan rentals in Tellico Plains tend to be smaller but still include sleeping for 2 to 4, a kitchenette, and often a portable toilet. Many listings also include a generator, outdoor speakers, and seatbelted seating for travel. Pro tip: confirm seatbelts match your group size before booking, since some travel trailers don't allow passengers while towing.
tn.gov/safety/driver-services/teendrivers/seatbelt.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts in Tellico Plains keep things flexible. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables ($5 to $15/day), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75 per trip), generators (often included with Class C rentals), bikes, kayaks, outdoor grills, and Starlink Wi-Fi for off-grid stays. Pickup is usually at the host's home base around Tellico Plains, Madisonville, or Sweetwater, with delivery to local campgrounds like Indian Boundary available for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary, with many listings offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and others offering unlimited. Pro tip: bundle linens, camp chairs, and a generator if you're heading to a primitive Cherokee National Forest site for a smoother first night.
fs.usda.gov/recreation/recarea/?recid=34835How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book a campervan rental in Tellico Plains or any other RV, you'll pay through RVezy's secure checkout with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), and it's released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, snap photos at both pickup and drop-off and follow the host's mileage and dumping rules. Pro tip: keep fuel receipts so any post-trip fueling is documented and easy to reconcile.
