Campgrounds and RV parks near Townsend, TN

The Cades Cove Loop Road is the main draw. The eleven mile one way loop passes historic churches, cabins, and open meadows with reliable deer, turkey, and black bear sightings. On Vehicle-Free Wednesdays from the first Wednesday in May through the last Wednesday in September, the loop is closed to motor vehicles from sunset Tuesday to sunrise Thursday, which is a strong reason to bring bikes in the RV. The Little River provides trout fishing, tubing, and swimming holes close to most Townsend campgrounds. The paved Townsend Bike Trail runs along US 321 and connects several parts of town without requiring a car. Day trip options include Abrams Falls, the Foothills Parkway overlooks, Tuckaleechee Caverns in town, and hikes to Laurel Falls or Alum Cave farther east in the park.

Spring runs cool and wet, with wildflowers blooming through Cades Cove and highs climbing from the mid 50s in March to the mid 70s in May. Late May and early June bring the synchronous firefly event at Elkmont, which is managed by a vehicle lottery through Recreation.gov and typically covers an eight day window of peak activity. The lottery usually opens in late April. Summer is the busiest season. Sites at both private campgrounds and Cades Cove Campground fill weeks in advance for weekends. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and humidity is high. Cades Cove has Vehicle-Free Wednesdays on the loop road from the first Wednesday in May through the last Wednesday in September. Fall color peaks in mid to late October and brings the second wave of heavy demand. Winter is the quietest window. Cades Cove Campground remains open year round on a reduced footprint, while several private campgrounds run limited winter operations or close entirely. Occasional snow and ice can affect the higher park roads.

Townsend is quieter than Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge and does not have the same density of restaurants and shops. Groceries, laundromats, and larger stores are in Maryville, about a 20 to 25 minute drive. Bears are active in and around all campgrounds. Food, coolers, and scented items must be stored inside a sealed vehicle or camper of solid, non-pliable material when not in use, and this rule is strictly enforced inside the park. Only heat-treated firewood bundled in its original packaging and bearing a USDA or state department of agriculture certification seal may be brought into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cell service is limited to nonexistent inside the park, including at Cades Cove Campground. Private Townsend campgrounds generally offer Wi-Fi, though speeds vary. Pets are allowed at most campgrounds on leash but are not permitted on park trails.
