Campgrounds near Walnut Hill, Tennessee
Walnut Hill is a small census-designated place in Sullivan County, in the Tri-Cities region of northeast Tennessee, between Bristol and Kingsport. Interstate 81 runs just south of the community, and Bristol Motor Speedway sits roughly 15 minutes away, which shapes camping demand year-round.
RV travelers have several options within a short drive. Shadrack Campground and Copperhead Ridge Glamping & RV Park sit closest to Bristol Motor Speedway, both offering full hookups within a short drive of the track. Peaceful Valley Campground and Appalachian Caverns Campground are set on the Blountville side, with Appalachian Caverns adding on-site cave tours and a gem mine. Lakeview RV Resort, in nearby Bluff City, provides a larger resort-style property with lake access.
Warriors' Path State Park in Kingsport, about 20 minutes west, is the anchor public campground for the area, with three campgrounds on Fort Patrick Henry Lake. The mix of private RV parks near the speedway and a full-service state park makes Walnut Hill a practical base for a Tri-Cities trip.
Things to do near Walnut Hill
Bristol Motor Speedway is the dominant attraction, with a NASCAR Cup weekend each spring in April and a night race weekend in mid-September, plus dragway events and concerts. The Birthplace of Country Music Museum in downtown Bristol covers the 1927 recording sessions that put the town on the map.
For outdoor time, Warriors' Path State Park offers hiking, mountain biking, an 18-hole golf course, a marina with boat and kayak rentals, and Darrell's Dream Boundless Playground. Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport adds a nature center and planetarium. Boone Lake and South Holston Lake are within easy reach for fishing and boating.
Appalachian Caverns in Blountville runs guided cave tours ranging from an easy walking tour to advanced Explorer and Wild tours through undeveloped passages, along with a gem mine that keeps kids busy for a couple of hours.

Northeast Tennessee has a humid subtropical climate with four clear seasons. Summers are warm rather than hot, with July averaging highs in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, and evenings that cool into the 60s thanks to the elevation. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for camping, with lower humidity and moderate rainfall.
Demand spikes twice a year around the Bristol Motor Speedway race weekends, typically in April and in September. Campgrounds within a few miles of the track, including Shadrack Campground and Copperhead Ridge Glamping & RV Park, fill months in advance for those dates, and rates rise sharply. Booking outside race weeks gives much better availability across every property in the area.
Winters are cold enough for occasional snow, with an average of around 13 inches per year and roughly nine days per year at or below freezing. Some private parks stay open year-round, while state-park bathhouses and marinas run on reduced services from late fall through early spring.
How to book
Warriors' Path State Park uses the Tennessee State Parks online reservation system, and reservations are required for all campsites. Bookings open up to one year in advance, with a non-refundable reservation fee per site. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead, either online or by calling the park office during weekday hours.
Private campgrounds near the speedway, including Shadrack Campground, Copperhead Ridge Glamping & RV Park, Peaceful Valley Campground, and Lakeview RV Resort, take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Appalachian Caverns Campground handles site bookings by a dedicated campground phone line separate from the cavern tour office.
For race weekends at Bristol Motor Speedway, book as early as possible; the speedway also operates its own event campgrounds with permits picked up at the campground check-in booth on arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Most campgrounds in the Walnut Hill area are accessed off I-81 or U.S. 11E, with easy pavement right to the gate. Expect wooded, rolling terrain rather than flat prairie sites. The area sits on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so shaded sites are common and some pads may slope. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Tri-Cities.
Copperhead Ridge and other newer private parks typically offer level sites with 30 and 50-amp hookups, while state-park sites at Warriors' Path have water and electric, with sewer hookups at the Moody Bluff loop.
Bring heat-treated firewood if visiting Warriors' Path State Park, which restricts outside untreated wood to protect against invasive pests. Bathhouses at the state park and larger private resorts are open year-round; smaller properties may close showers during hard freezes.
