Campgrounds and RV parks near Wildwood, TN

The Townsend entrance leads directly to Cades Cove, an 11-mile loop road known for wildlife viewing, historic cabins and churches, and access to the Abrams Falls trail. Little River Road follows the river between Townsend and Sugarlands, with pull-offs for swimming holes, tubing, and picnics that work well for a day out with kids. Tuckaleechee Caverns in Townsend offers guided cave tours suited to families, and the Foothills Parkway provides an easy scenic drive with wide mountain views. Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood are within roughly a 45-minute drive when travelers want theme parks, dinner shows, or in-town attractions. Hiking near Wildwood ranges from short waterfall walks to longer routes into the high country, and trout fishing is popular along the Little River and its tributaries.

Spring brings wildflowers along low-elevation trails and cooler nights, with steady rainfall and occasional strong storms. Seasonal campgrounds inside the park reopen through March and April, and reservation demand climbs sharply after mid-April as school breaks begin. Higher elevations can still see snow into early spring. Summer is the busiest stretch. Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Smokemont fill quickly on weekends, and traffic on Little River Road and the Cades Cove Loop is heaviest between mid-morning and late afternoon. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and lower-elevation daytime highs sit in the mid to upper 80s. Fall foliage peaks from mid-October into early November, with color arriving first at higher elevations. Weekend campsite availability during October is among the tightest of the year. Winter is quieter, with mild days, cold nights, and possible snow or ice at elevation. Cades Cove and Smokemont are the only in-park campgrounds open year round, and most private RV parks near Wildwood also operate through the winter.

RV renters should plan for winding two-lane roads once they leave US-321 and turn toward the park. Some spur roads to trailheads are narrow with tight turns, so it is common to leave the RV at the campground and use a tow vehicle for sightseeing. Black bears are active in the region, and food storage rules are strict at all park campgrounds. Firewood brought in must be certified heat-treated and marked with a state or federal seal, or collected as dead and down wood inside the park. Cell service is patchy inside the park and along parts of the Wildwood and Townsend corridor. Download maps in advance, pack layers for cool mornings even in summer, and expect slower travel times on weekends when Cades Cove traffic backs up.
