Campgrounds and RV parks near Winfield, TN

Winfield sits in Scott County on the northern edge of Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau, minutes from the Kentucky line and the southern entrances to Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, a 125,000-acre unit protecting the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries. The park spans the Tennessee-Kentucky border, giving RV renters based near Winfield reasonable drive times to campgrounds on both sides. Most developed camping in the area is inside Big South Fork. The park operates five campgrounds: Bandy Creek in Tennessee and Blue Heron in Kentucky as developed sites with many amenities, Alum Ford in Kentucky as a limited primitive area, plus two equestrian campgrounds, Bear Creek in Kentucky and Station Camp in Tennessee, both managed by the park. Private options nearby cater to off-road riders using the surrounding trail systems. Campgrounds within a short drive of Winfield include Blue Heron - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area, Bear Creek Horse Camp - Big South Fork National River Recreational Area, and Station Horse Camp - Big South Fork Natural Reserve RA inside the park, plus Trails End Campground and Winona/New River KOA on the private side near the Brimstone and North Cumberland riding areas.

Reservations for the four reservable park campgrounds go through the federal system. Campsites can be booked by calling 1-877-444-6777 or online at recreation.gov up to six months in advance, while Alum Ford is not reservable and is available first-come, first-served on the honor system. Group camp has a longer window and can be reserved up to 360 days in advance. For peak spring and fall weekends, book as soon as the six-month window opens. Cancellations are common, so mid-week travelers can often pick up sites closer in. Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Trails End Campground takes reservations directly by phone or through its website, and Winona/New River KOA books through the KOA site. Confirm site length limits before reserving: Blue Heron sites can accommodate RVs and trailers between 28 and 61 feet, and older loops at some private parks are tighter.
