Campgrounds and RV parks near Alto, TX

The Texas State Railroad runs vintage steam and diesel excursions between Rusk and Palestine, and it is the anchor attraction for most visitors. The Caddo Mounds State Historic Site, just west of Alto on Highway 21, preserves ceremonial earthworks from a Caddo settlement dating to roughly A.D. 800. Mission Tejas State Park offers marked hiking trails, a replica log mission built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and a fishing pond. The neighboring Davy Crockett National Forest adds the Four C National Recreation Trail and Ratcliff Lake, which permits swimming and paddling. Nacogdoches, about half an hour south, is one of the oldest towns in Texas and offers a walkable historic district, the Stephen F. Austin State University arboretum, and additional dining and grocery stops useful for restocking mid-trip.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. March through May brings dogwood and redbud blooms in the Piney Woods, with comfortable daytime highs and cool nights that suit tent-and-RV mixed groups. Late-spring thunderstorms are common, so weather-aware routing matters. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs frequently in the low to mid-90s Fahrenheit and mosquitoes active near water. Shaded state-park loops and full-hookup private parks with 50-amp service become important for running air conditioning. School-holiday weekends fill early, particularly Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Fall delivers the most reliable weather: cooler air arrives by late October, humidity drops, and hardwood color peaks through early November in the bottomlands. Winter is mild but wet, with occasional hard freezes that can affect water hookups. Some private parks reduce hours or amenities in the coldest weeks, so confirm availability before booking.

Roads into Alto are two-lane state highways with limited shoulders. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth wheels should plan daylight arrivals and avoid tight turns onto unpaved forest roads. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town but can drop inside the national forest. Mission Tejas State Park electric sites are wooded and offer water and electricity, with sites 1-6 at 30 amp and sites 7-15 at 30/50 amp; a dump station is available at the campground entrance. Private parks near Rusk and Nacogdoches offer level pads, full hookups, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Expect biting insects from late spring through early fall, occasional armadillos and deer near sites at dusk, and firewood rules that discourage moving wood between counties. Nearest full-service grocery, fuel, and propane stops are in Rusk and Nacogdoches.
