Camping near Amherst, Texas
Amherst is a small farming community in Lamb County on the High Plains of West Texas, roughly 50 miles northwest of Lubbock and within easy reach of the Texas-New Mexico border. The town sits at about 3,600 feet on flat cotton country, so RV travelers should expect wide horizons, big skies, and few natural windbreaks. Local RV options are compact and utilitarian: Opdyke West RV Park and Patriot RV Park are the closest full-hookup stops, while Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park, Prairie Land RV Park, and Red Raider RV Park sit closer to the Lubbock metro and work well as bases for exploring the region.
The area draws RVers for two main reasons: it is a practical overnight stop between Amarillo and Lubbock on US-84, and it puts travelers within a short drive of Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge. Muleshoe is the oldest national wildlife refuge in Texas, established in 1935, and hosts one of the largest concentrations of lesser sandhill cranes in North America, with roughly 15 percent of the lesser sandhill crane population depending on the refuge between fall and spring.
Expect a working-town feel rather than a resort scene. Grocery, fuel, and propane are easiest in Littlefield, Muleshoe, or Lubbock.
Things to do around Amherst
Wildlife viewing is the headline activity. Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge offers wildlife-dependent recreation, including wildlife watching and photography, limited hunting by drawing only, hiking, and camping, with viewing opportunities around Paul's Lake, White Lake, and Goose Lake. Cranes are most visible at dawn and dusk as they leave the lakes to feed in nearby fields.
Lubbock, about an hour southeast, adds urban options: the Buddy Holly Center, the National Ranching Heritage Center, Texas Tech University, and a growing winery scene on the South Plains. Families using Red Raider RV Park or Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park can day-trip in easily for museums, restaurants, and Texas Tech events.
Closer to Amherst, the flat farm roads are popular with cyclists in cooler months, and clear skies make for excellent stargazing directly from most rural RV sites.

The Amherst area has a semi-arid High Plains climate: hot, sunny summers, dry winters with occasional cold snaps, and strong wind year-round. Summer highs regularly reach the low 90s, while winter nights routinely drop below freezing, with occasional snow and ice events. Spring is the windiest and most volatile stretch, with dust events and severe thunderstorms possible from April into June.
Fall is the sweet spot for most RVers. Days are warm and dry, nights cool off, and the first sandhill cranes begin arriving. Wintering sandhill cranes normally begin arriving around the end of September, and their numbers peak between December and mid-February, often at 100,000 or more birds at Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge.
Winter camping is workable but demands cold-weather prep: freezing overnight lows, wind chill, and the occasional snow or ice event can catch travelers off guard. Summer heat matters more than farther north because shade is scarce on the open plains, so awnings, sunshades, and reliable air conditioning make a real difference.
Booking and reservations
Private RV parks around Amherst, including Opdyke West RV Park, Patriot RV Park, Shallowater Mobile Home and RV Park, Prairie Land RV Park, and Red Raider RV Park, are typically booked directly by phone or through each park's own website. Many cater to long-term guests tied to agriculture and oilfield work, so nightly availability can tighten during harvest and around Texas Tech home football weekends. Reserving a week or two ahead is usually enough outside those peaks.
Public-land camping runs on different systems. Primitive camping is allowed at Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation required, and sites are basic. For state parks across the region, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department handles camping bookings through its official reservation site.
What to expect on site
Most Amherst-area RV parks are small, level gravel or caliche lots with full hookups and a laundry room, with limited resort-style amenities. Sites tend to be pull-through and can accommodate large rigs, but shade is scarce on the open plains, so awnings and sunshades are useful in summer.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along US-84 and near Lubbock, and most parks offer Wi-Fi, though speeds vary. Water is potable but hard; a filter helps on longer stays. Wind is a near-constant companion, so secure loose gear, retract awnings when leaving the site, and expect blowing dust in spring.
Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no admission fee, but hookups, showers, and dump stations are not provided on refuge land.
